Just got a Blackberry 8820 with AT&T, using pay-per-use data services, now I want to use the Wi Fi connection but tech support says it requires the $30/month Blackberry services? This makes no sense since the Wi Fi should use my local wireless network, but even though it seems to see the wireless access point ok it will not establish a connection

You should have no problem using wifi...make sure your using the "wifi Browser" as the default browser, under options/advanced options/browser...
