Using the internet on iphone

I just purchased a new unlocked iphone. My carrier is Suncom, and I don't have a data plan. I figured than since the iphone comes with the safari browser I could just connect to the wifi I have at home and not be charged by Suncom for using the internet oh the iphone. But I started having doubts about this. I already posted in 2 different forums this same question and got an answer but I just wanted to get a third opinion.

The question is:

If I use the safari browser with a wifi connection at home (or anywhere that there is one), will I be charged by suncom for using data time?

I'll be using my own internet connection, not theirs, and I'll be using the safari browser.

Please advise! Thanks!

Not at all, you are using a wifi connection has nothing to do with the service provider.JUst be mindful that the iphone switches automatically from wifi to edge if you lose connection with wifi. Im sure there is a way you can disable the auto switch.

I was told that there was no way to disable the autoswitch, but I'll know that when I get the phone.

So, as long as I don't use EDGE I won't be charged by suncom for the data time?

exactly, because you are using your own wifi connection.

Thank you! That's what I was told the first 2 times. thank you!!!

I just don't want to get a $1.000 bill next month.

Hey there fellow Suncom'er and welcome to HoFo. As long as you don't put your internet settings in for Suncom, it will not connect to the edge network. I have the regular $5 internet plan and have noticed extra charges the few times I have used it. So I am waiting till the Suncom/T-Mobile merger completes and then I'll use the T-Zones hack from installer. For now the wifi is good enough, but I would like to be able to use edge when wifi is not available.

How do I make sure that I don't put my internet settings in for suncom??? I've never heard of that?

I have a regular $3.99 data plan which is requiered to send text message and I get very limited internet time a month. But I don't plan on using that if I can use wifi instead so they don't charge me.

If you don't manually put them in under edge settings then don't worry about it, you won't be able to connect to edge network.

Posted by: wytch

Is there a way that I can make sure it NEVER connects to the edge network.

Make sure your edge settings are blank.

Posted by: wytch

Thanks , I hope that helps

Sure it will help because the phone can't connect to your edge network without the proper settings added. So blank settings means no edge interent usage. So don't worry.

Another question. Will I be asked to do that when I put my Sim Card?

No it won't ask you when you put your sim card in the phone. The only time it will say something is if you try to use the internet with wifi off and not the proper edge settings, it will say samething like unable to connect with edge check to see it the edge network settings are correct or something like that. But if you are connected to wifi you won't get this message.

You can use BossPrefs to turn off edge, or have your provider turn off edge on your account. If it is disabled on your account, the E icon will not even show up on the phone.

I didn't think of that before. Thanks. I'll do that to be on the safe side.

you can also see your usage chart for all data transferred through EDGE. its under settings. If you are using wifi, this meter does not change.

you can also see your usage chart for all data transferred through EDGE[I]

I guess that's what I'll have to do because I called suncom and apparently EDGE cant be blocked from iphone.

Call them and tell them that you want to disable internet on the account because of disciplinary issues for the account or make up something like that. I did that with my brothers phone as a joke and he did not figure it out for like 2 weeks. That was using ATT though so I dont know if suncom will do that or not. Its worth a try!
