Refurb iPhone - wifi seems to be broken... help

Hi All,
I got a refurb iPhone direct from AT&T. The phone came in with firmware 1.1.2 out of the box. I then upgraded it to 1.1.4 with iTunes and then used iLiberty+ to activate/unlock/jailbreak and have been using it for the last 3 days or so.
But I've been noticing that wifi has been spotty and unreliable. At home, I use a Linksys WRT54G v.5 wireless router. I was able to connect my iPhone to the wireless router. I was sitting in the same room about 5 ft away from the router, and the wifi signal strength on the iPhone is only showing 1/3 or 2/3. But then when I use wifi, it will sporadically drop the connection. And most of the time, it won't reconnect. I'll have to go to wireless setting and turn off and on wifi, then it'll see the router and connect.
Today in the office, I tried to connect to our wireless here, but my iPhone was unable to even see the SSID. 2 coworkers in my office also have iPhone and on their phone, they get full bar when they connect to our wireless.
So I'm now convinced that my refurb iPhone is defective. Maybe this is the reason why it was returned by the original buyer.
A few questions:
1) Has anybody else experienced issues with wifi dropping off connections and not being able to pick up signal from otherwise strong wifi?
2) My coworker suggested that I go to Apple Store and see if they can exchange it. What is my chance of success of doing this?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

First I would fully restore to 1.1.4 without any hacking and see if that makes any difference. If the Wi-Fi is still flaky then take it to the Apple Store.

i have a refurb not hacked upgraded to 1.1.4 the same day and have exactly the same problem. if i'm not within arms length of my router, it just doesn't get a signal.
i cranked up the power on the router, still no beans.
from a lot of the boards, it seems this isn't an atypical problem, and that jailbreaking the phone isn't the cause. it may be more hardware related. i'll update when i find out more but it basically makes the wifi useless.
