Ok, so theres been a lot of people asking how to flash with XS++, I see a lot of blog links and what not, and theres been demand for a tutorial as a post... I have screenshots of every step, so here goes.

DISCLAIMER: I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR BRICKED/MESSED UP PHONES

!!!!Start off by turning off your phone, removing the battery and sticking it back in.

Step 1: Open up XS++ and press connect

Step 2: Hold C on your phone and connect the USB cable

Step 3: Press the GDFS button, and press Backup GDFS
THIS STEP IS VERY VERY IMPORTANT INCASE THINGS GO BAD

After it says Backup GDFS complete, unplug the phone, remove and reinsert the battery

Step 4: Repeat Steps 1 and 2

Step 5: Check flash main firmware and flash file system,
navigate to your MAIN firmware file and put it under the main box
naivgate to your FS firmware file and put it under the file system box
check customize firmware, select your phone model, and the region that matches the FS that you have downloaded

Step 5 alternative: IF YOU DO NOT FIND YOUR REGION/PHONE
- you MUST download a custpack file... usually a .zip
- extract this into XS++/own_custpack such that it is XS++/own_custpack/tpa/....
- select /own_custpack under phone model

Step 6: Hit Flash and wait for it to complete... it will tell you when you can disconnect the phone....

Few other points:

1. If you are flashing DB2020 and XS++ asks you to upgrade to CID52, say yes
2. BACKUP YOUR CONTACTS/ANYTHING ELSE BEFORE DOING THIS, your entire phone will have no traces of you left on it

Thanks for the tutorial. I have a w580i and followed the instructions and it said the flash was successful. When I turned the phone on, I got this msg: "configuration error. Please contact network operator."

I'm not sure if I made a mistake on this instruction line:

extract this into XS++/own_custpack such that it is XS++/own_custpack/tpa/....

Can you elaborate further?

OK, so if you download the XS++ I provided:

Extract that into a folder called XS++
then make a folder called own_custpack inside XS++ such that its C:/XS++/own_custpack/

Now, if you've downloaded one of the custpacks, you will see that inside the custpack, there is a folder called "tpa"
just put tpa in the folder called own_custpack

Now go back into XS++, connect your phone, and ONLY check the customize box, and check the phone model to own_custpack... you do not need to reflash the main or FS

You'd have to pick MAIN HONG KONG

All asian FS must be matched with asian MAIN

Ok, so I would just download

W810_CDA102494_5_HONG_KONG.zip and
W810_R4DB005_FS_HONG_KONG_RED49.rar ?

Also, would it matter what files I use? My phone is CID 49.

Make sure the CID's match with where it says RED49, so CID49
You extract the FS, and put it where it says file system, and you extract main and put it where it says main...
.
Then you extract the CDA102494_5_HONG_KONG.zip into own_custpack, or you can simply just select W810 and region: HONG KONG in XS++, makes no diff

I managed to find a W810_CDA102494_5_HONG_KONG.zip, one that had a .fbn file instead of the tpa folder.

I was a PITA to search around though - most links on websites are expired

But all in all, I managed to get 2 w810i's debranded. One had the WSoD issue. THANKS AGAIN!

you found the cust pack (the first one) and the file system (the second one)

now you need the generic MAIN firmware (the LA stands for the name of your phone -- every SE has a name)

look at the 3rd screen shot...

you see EROM CID:

thats what you look for. Just dont use the sony ericsson update service and you wont get CID53

read that far manager tutorial. you can erase anything you want.

I dunno is there is a way to browse the FS in XS++

I don't know about deleting games.. but I'll put up a tutorial later on how to add flash themes and mod drivers with XS++ later on...

What did you use to flash it? this tutorial?

Theres no way this tutorial turned it into a CID53 if it was not a CID53 before....

Some of the paid services like davinci or wotan may support CID53 now... but theres no free way to flash CID53

Farmanager with the jdflasher plugin will get you back into cid53.

Use far and flash FS MAIN, and cust pack visit that link that i posted. Lets not clutter this tutorial with farmanager stuff. you will now have to find CID53 files DONT USE THE CID 52 FILES FROM THIS THREAD WITH YOUR NEW CID 53 PHONE!!!

you need
K790_CDA102568_107_R4A_GENERIC_AMERICA_2.zip
thats the cust pack (hint -- they have CDA in them)

K790_R6BC002_FS_AMERICA_2_RED52.rar -- good job.. thats the FS

now you need the generic "MAIN"

I was wondering is it ok to download the firmwares from here which say they are for K800. Also is it possible to get a cust pack for the Virgin network and will it be unlocked if all goes well.

Just having the firmware doesn't mean you unlock the phone... there is a tutorial in the unlocking forum, follow that tutorial and you can figure out how to unlock it

I uninstalled the SE PC suite, installed the USB driver from SEtoll2lite, then tried to connect the phone. It hangs at "Protocol Version" until I disconnect the phone.

Any suggestions?

Yes, I removed and reinstalled the battery, then held the "C" button while connecting the USB cable - after clicking connect. The first time I tried, after insalling the USB driver - "SEMC flash device" came up ... I have my sound turned off - I'll try again to see if the sound plays.

I'm trying to revive a Cingular W810i.

Which firmware file do I need for a Cingular W810i?. Can I use the generic one listed in the first page here? I don't see any American firmware in there for this phone. What about the file system?

FS can be america 1 or 2 if you just care about english. The firmware will be generic. The cust file should match the FS.

I dont but they are prolly on 4shared.com or pay a few dollars and get a sure fire copy over at topsony.com (I would recommend doing that)

dont use your own custom packs will brick your phone bricked my w580i and had to reflash the phone I dont know if it will brick your phone but it bricked myn it trys connecting to gdfs and it will make it corrupt and you will end having to reflash the phone!

I think thats just you... these work the exact same way as the ones that come with XS++

PLUS, if what you're saying is true (messing up your GDFS) you would not be able to fix it by just simply reflashing

i knew about this way before, however, the method i use with my w810i...u CANNOT use the custpack setting in XS++..i had to extract the custpack and copy it onto the phone with FAR..

is it possible to do everything with just XS++ now?

well, the reason why i was asking is it is way easier like this, and its also possible to get the real american generic on it (as i think it is impossible to download it as a separate file)

what i did was i found a modded europe made to work with american phones and meant to be flashed with se tools or far

When i tried with JUST XS++ around feb15 2008, i did everything in this guide (as i mentioned, i was already fully familiar with the method). it flashed the main good, then it moved onto the fs, and flashed that good (when i tried back in 2007, XS++ wouldnt even flash fs...so this was a big improvement)..then when it went onto the custpack, it wouldnt finish, even after 20 minutes (starting from when it starts to flash custpack)

phone was a cid49, and i know its capable of being flashed, as it was debranded already, and i was just trying to repair WSOD

i didnt have any custpacks in any folders, i was under the impression that the program has it all built in.

so since that day, i went back with the regular method, of flash break-in main + FS, then open up FAR, copy over custpack (and audio driver

and cam

..then flash regular main, bootup, go through all the startup stuff (please wait..etc..)..then when its working, turn off, flash patches with se tools.

but the catch with the method i used was i cannot get my hands on the american FS...i only had that modded europe one. so that was why i tried using the built in one with XS++ which lead me to a brick.

awaiting a reply before i put faith into this method again..however, its not really needed at the moment, because the phone works good

I think it might have just been an anomaly that it bricked, XS++ does have custpacks built in, though you can build your own custpacks through changing the XML and files of custpacks of similar phones....

I created a K810 HK pack from changing K810 APAC pack with some settings from a K800 HK pack... theres not that much code in the XML, and most of it relates to carrier settings anyways, the key things are the languages and the hooks (region specific icons)

I'm 90% certian there is no Korean, I had a Korean gf at one point and wanted songs not to show up as boxes on her phone, searched for firmware far and wide, nothing....

ah i c, so most likely, it was some other problem that caused the brick.

now that i think about it...i think the port at the bottom of my old w810i was iffy, because once in a while it was detected with flashing programs. but with my new one, it detects it right away and on first try.

im going to be flashing a friend's phone today, but im still a bit scared to trust it all to XS++

even though XS++ probably wasnt at fault

but my faith is slowly building

his phone is WSOD'd and out of warranty, so its worth a try

. its either i try and fix for free, or he pays someone to TRY and fix.

TRIED AGAIN...i held down C harder, and pushed the USB in a bit tighter, and it detects it...

After flashing..it actually works..however, i wasnt brave enough to follow this guide, i did it the old fashion way which includes far manager

So, i can safely say, flashing a WSOD'd w810i recovered it, if all goes well during the process

Been trying hard for the past few hours, and i can barely get things to flash, half the time XS++ doesnt detect the phone, and it just sticks at:

Sending db2010_cid00_prodid_p3l.bin...

i dont know if its a problem with the gdfs or what?

what causes it not to be detected by XS++ 100% of the time..i have to retry about 40 times, before it detects it, and even if it does, SOMETIMES i can flash something, and sometimes i cant.

EDIT:
AFTER alot of tries it doesnt even do anything anymore.

and most of the time, im not even flashing anything, im just trying to connect.

i have a backup of the gdfs..but i dont even know how to restore it, if i cant even connect.

I connect holding down C:

sometimes it shows this:
Sending db2010_cid00_prodid_p3l.bin...

sometimes it connects but cant flash cause it errors out, or sometimes it gets passed Sending db2010_cid00_prodid_p3l.bin...
but errors out before i can do anything.

When i connect without holding C, its the same thing as if i was connecting with holding C.

now i need help. if there is nothing i can do, i understand, but since im not paying sony to repair, what are my choices to try to fix?

Is the SEMC flash device listed in the device manager?

What version of windows are you using?

Have you installed the drivers?

Can you "IDENTIFY" with any other tool ? -- IE SETOOL2LT ?

When you plug in the phone are you holding down the clear key?

Do you hear the computer make the magic USB (DOO DOO ~) sound?

lol, u havent realized that im not a beginner doing this? (i dont mean it in a rudeway, i appreciate your help greatly)

its just, when it gets up to this part, im stumped.

-flash device is listed

-windows xp

-drivers installed

-cant identify, get some error about possible recovery needed

-yes, holding down clear key, doesnt matter if i hold it or not (anymore) though anymore, it shows same message both ways.

-i record important things, so i disable computer from making those sounds.

bare in mind, i have my working w810i, and since it works, it connects perfectly fine everytime. but its just this one, after flashing, it dies.

Here is the full story organized properly:

my friend's W810i got WSOD'd. since it was out of warranty and technically, purchased without warranty (cough), i tried to fix with flashing. (i flashed my own twice before so im not a noob to it).

After flash, turned it on, showed the please wait screen with the BLACK background (not the red background), and after a while, the phone booted up. Thus, I managed to fix it, and i even setup the date and time, and made one test call.

then i turned it off to remove my sim, and get the phone ready to give it back to my friend. But before i told him i got it fixed, i decided to turn it back on one more time, and guess what, WSOD

the only difference was this time i turned it on with no sim.

So i said, okay, maybe i messed up flashing, so i decided to use this guide this time 100% (my previous method which i had faith in because it always worked in the past was with XS++ to flash main and fs and far manager to flash custpack)

So i decided to trust this guide to flash the custpack, even after i was scared to. So i flashed main, fs, and custpack. main was good, fs was good, custpack remained stuck at activating gdfs even after 30 minutes. so i stopped it, restarted xs++, and tried the flash again, however, i only did the custpack this time, since the main, and fs was done already. so it actually flashed the custpack to my surprise (first time for me).

so i turned on the phone, then it went to a please wait screen with RED BACKGROUND this time. this is the one that usually gets reported as freezing there. i could be wrong, but i believe this usually happens with a corrupt gdfs.

however, after that red please wait screen for about an hour, had no choice, but to power off, which actually worked, so i didnt have to eject battery. so i turned it off and on again, stuck at please wait screen again.

so i said to myself, okay, let me try back one last flash using my method (xs++ and far) before i give up. so while trying to connect, it just DOESNT. i keep trying to connect, then after about 40 tries, it connects, however, sometimes it quickly errors out as i try a flash, or it does the flash, but doesnt really show an effect except killing the phone (from what i can see).

And when it gets up to this point, it doesnt matter whether u hold down C or not anymore, it shows the same msgs and errors/semi success. because regularly, if u connect without holding C, it doesnt work (if im not mistaken) with flashing programs.

And obviously, since i have a fair amount of experience with it, i have gdfs backup of the three w810i i have ever tried flashing..including this one.

however, that is the only thing i know how to backup, dont know how to backup anything else.

SO NOW, we are up to date. now whats next to try? is there a way to FORCE flash to the phone without service cable? if not, how do i get a service cable in toronto canada, and will buying a service cable help or not (is it worth it or not?)

maybe if it cant recover, it will be more worth it to just get another phone (for my friend...and when my brand new w810i decides to die..i guess i will have to get another one too) unless that service cable can fix more serious problems.

have you tried holding 2+5 vs the clear key? Does it connect that way? If so the EROM may be damaged and in need of repair/upgrade. So you know what cid the phone is?

If your going to be modding SE phones the service cable is prolly a good idea. They are pretty cheep, HOWEVER I find my self using the dcu60 most of the time because of the speed..

dont worry..i wont ask how, cause i know it aint easy for someone in my position to do

EDIT: after some further reading, signs of bad erom is when the infared light blinks with nothing on screen. i just get nothing, and cant connect to xs++ or setool2lite.

i cant even get the latest setool2lite..nod32 warns me of virus. (more serious virus, cause usually i find a way to get around it, but nod32 is very serious about this one)

EDIT AGAIN: wow, i managed to get the setools latest, i connected the phone, it identified it quick. so i said, WOW, its connecting on first try, lemme try flash. so i followed the other sticky thats right beside this one (cept i used the right stuff for my own phone)..everything flashed in one shot, no errors that i noticed, and when it finished, i removed battery, insert back, tried to turn on the phone, and still nothing, doesnt charge or show any signs of charging, doesnt even have WSOD. hMmmMM

i waited a bit from when i flashed the gdfs to continue...

then i flashed the main, and FS, and i got power back to the phone, but just WSOD.

so now the phone is back to WSOD. big improvement over NO power AT ALL. however, when i plug in power adapter, white screen comes on and stays, no red infrared shows up

im using the same files i used when i got it working the first time..

buts its hard to flash..cause still, only once in a while it connects to either xs++ or setools.

Are you sure the contacts on the bottom of the phone are clean? If they are your almost at the end of the trouble shooting. The only other thing that i can think of is to flash a new erom, restore GDFS and do a full flash with cust.

The erom is kinda the brains of the flash chip. Is its having issues everything else will too. BUT your intermittent issues could be caused by a bad cable, and or dirty connection too (hell or just the USB port you are using)...

last time i tried flashing a different fs, i killed my phone, so i always stick with the fs the phone comes with. this is actually the way rogers distributes their phones. R4EA031 MAIN, with R4ED001 FS. i wonder if that is why soo many rogers phones get WSOD.

most of the time i get this: "phone pre-boot failed,possible RECOVERY needed."

since the phone only connects ONCE after giving it a long rest.

i cannot even flash properly, because it connects good, then says to detach after and connect back, and when i connect back, it doesnt work...i have on more plan, but it will take about 2 hors to try, since i have to wait in between connecting.

MP, if nothing is wrong with my cable, what are my choices? just throw away the phone and get a new one that isnt made with an ST memory chip (dynamic/floating memory area for FS and CXC).

when this phone works good, its GREAT, but when it gets problems, it gets serious ones.

EDIT again: after trying some flashing, managed to get the WSOD, PLUS infrared this time. so its an improvement. I think finally i damaged the gdfs. it wont even let me restore it.

Before I knew about these forums I went ahead and used wotan to flash, then I updated so I'm sure I'm on CID53. Will I still be able to upgrade my phone drivers, or should i redo it using FAR? Thanks. I'm writing this from my W810i BTW. EDIT: Or can I use XS++? Sorry I forgot the whole reason asked.

I dont think cid 53 is for the 810. Check and see what cid you have.

if it works now you will be fine. a regular flash will not modify that portion of the gdfs. Im not sure why it does not match,,, I would make a backup of your GDFS b4 you flash just to be safe .

LA is not Los Angeles (city)
HN is not Hungary

the cust packs are the same for all db2020 phones. use any of them from any version.. Just make sure and match the region -- ie AMERICA_1 AMERICA_2 or what ever file system you used..

what language are you looking for? English? america 1 and 2 will work just fine.

Yeah I was looking for English, but I couldn't find main and fs files that matched. The ones in the beginning of this thread were dead links so as of right now I'm still rocking the wotan firmware. But, I guess it doesn't matter because my main goal was to change my cam and acoustic drivers, which I was able to do. But, if anyone has those files I'd really appreciate it.

there is my phone info along with the flash progress and finally the error. I've downloaded every American file for w580 i can see on the list. I keep getting an error when I try to flash it that shuts off XS++. Can someone help a poor noob ?!

So I'm trying to unbrand a k810 from Australia. It's already unlocked. I was looking at the other thread about using SETool 2 Lite.

So my first question is, is using XS++ the same process just different app? Will this unbrand my phone while still keeping it unlocked?

My other question is about which files to use to flash my phone.

Right now my k810 is on R6BC002 firmware CID52 and the region is listed as ANZ. My understanding is that I need to make sure that the all the files (.fbn, .mbn, and the zip file) I use match up.

So based on the listing from the first page, I downloaded the following files:

- K810_R8BA024_FS_HONG_KONG_RED52.fbn
- K810_R8BA024_MAIN_HONG_KONG_SM_RED52.mbn
- K810-HB1-06_Gen_CDA102568_202_R2A_LC_GENERIC_HONG_KONG.zip

So am I good to go and unbrand my phone? My understanding is that all firmware have English support, so I assume I can use the Hong Kong files I listed.

If not, what files do I need?

This is an excellent thread.

I've finally successfully flashed my K810I to the newest firmware R8BA024 Hong Kong version from its original over a year old stock R1KG001 Hong Kong firmware and saved myself ~$40 of flash service

. From R1KG001 all the way up to R8BA was indeed a huge jump!

After hours of testing, I can definetely tell a difference in UI speed, music player, file transfer, etc. Especially in the music player I've tested, I've noticed fade in/out effect when I turn it on/off. Return to main screen from music player will let you see a highlight of your currently playing song on the top of the main screen. There will be song title display at the top of screen again when the next song suffles. The bug when i experienced when creating a play list is also fixed. There are possibly serveral more bugs fixed going from R1A to R8BA024. Lastly, currently enjoy using VanillaGlow theme that came with this firmware.

Special note regarding flash:

#1:
Before you proceed using the XS++ flash program to flash your phone, make sure you've the SE phone USB driver installed:

I didn't have the SE phone USB driver installed in my Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 before but my comp would still be able to pick up the my K810I phone whenever I do file transfer. Vista would setup a driver for my comp to recognize my phone everytime I do file transfer from my PC to either the Phone Memory Card or the Phone's Internal Memory. However, it is different case when you flash your phone using our supplied USB cable (Not the data cable that you'd have to purchase seperately for dedicated flash purposes) which came with our SE phone and XS++ program. If you don't install the SE Phone USB Driver prior to using the XS++ flash program, you'll get this kind of error msg:

If your phone is not listed under the XS++ program phone list such as my K810I, you'll need to download the custom pack file in .zip
Once you've downloaded the matching version custom pack (ie. Hong Kong for all three files - FS, MAIN, custom pack) as listed down below, you'll need to copy the tpa folder from the extrated custom pack zip file into a new folder renamed to own_custpack in order for XS++ program to pick up the file.

- K810_R8BA024_MAIN_HONG_KONG_SM_RED52.mbn
- K810-HB1-06_Gen_CDA102568_202_R2A_LC_GENERIC_HONG_KONG.zip

Make sure you DO NOT use XS++ flash program along with the own_custpack that you just created to flash under DESKTOP environment, becouse your phone will get "configuration error. Please contact network operator..." error pop up msg after you turn on the phone from the successful flash. Make sure you move the XS++ flash program along with the own_custpack folder that you just created (again, tpa folder is inside the own_custpack folder) to somewhere else under C drive. The reason you should do this is becouse during flash, XS++ program will generate a XS++ text document and for some reason it's not showing in desktop condition, thus, two times I've tried to reflash the custom pack alone and I still get the "configuration error. Please contact network operator..." error everytime I turns my phone on after the successful flashes. Once I've put all the necessary files that I needed in My Download folder under C drive for example and flash once again, there was no more error pop up msg when I turned the phone on after the successful flash.

Yes, I was unfortunately enough to ran in both errors that I've clearly described above like some other people who has been through this and got the exact same error(s). But, fortunately, I was able to fix the mistakes I've done during the flash process by reading each single post throughout the 8 pages of this thread. And now I've summerized basically all the possible errors you might encounter during the flash at your convenience. Other than that, make sure you follow every step in the XS++ tutorial guide wrote by RLP06 carefully.

Lastly, you shouldn't really need to worry about the risk of turning your phone into an expensive piece of paper way if you've done everything I've mentioned above.

but my dad's w800 has a problem with the volume when on a call, its extremely low, so i was hoping i could fix that

Do the first few steps of my tutorial up to the point where you plug your phone in...
Once you plug it in, there will be an output on the left, let me know what the CID is and I'll grab a firmware for you

I can connect my phone to my computer to use Disc2Phone to transfer music or connect it to access my memory card for other things, but just this program

first, the "C" button is on the right side of the phone, (with the arrow pointing back...i THINK).
second, make sure the files are right. me, i used k750 on a w810.lol.
through experience(i could be wrong) make sure that the custom pack is NOT hong kong. whenever i used hong kong as custpack, i get config error. uh yea. i think that's it.

hey..after i flashed my phone, my media player doesnt work!!! i can access the songs through the files>sounds, but NOTHING is in the walkman player when i open it. "0/0" please help

Just unplug the battery, put it back in and that error should be gone.

Yea, those are CID53 files.

The customize thing I never really understood, but for the w580, I think you do need them.
