Nokia 6263 - Application Access Issues

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have T-zones & T-mobile Total Internet on my plan.

I used the phone's browser to download Opera Mini 4.0+
When I went to install Opera Mini onto the phone, Opera mini begins to load and seems like it will work fine as it says "Installing" then it generates a message "Application acces set to not allowed"
the browser is left open but only with "Failed to Connect to the Internet"
with information where you can goto the operamini website with your desktop browser or contact your service provider for Internet settings.

I then close the Phone browser, goto where Opera Mini was installed "Games & Apps" folder, and click "Options" under options are several different options you can select. One being "Application Access" (which is grayed out) meaning you cannot edit the settings to allow "Access set to Allowed"

Being that said, I believe that Nokia is responsible for this NOT t-mobile.
It is a certificate access rights problem where you need to have the certificate installed to allow you to have access to the internet via (Opera Mini 4.0+)

The other issue is that the software (Opera Mini) is "not a trusted installer" as you begin the download and installation process, which maybe why you aren't allowed to change settings.

I believe that Nokia has that set to default to prevent DAMAGE to phone from bad, virus loaded software.

Which means you'd have to contact Nokia team to get the answers to this.

More than likely they will help you get the issue resolved and thus, allow you to control what you install.

I haven't contacted Nokia YET, i intend to do so. I don't see why Nokia should IF THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS, to have the right to block end users from being able to control what they want to do with their phone which to me sounds like Communism. Why should we be controlled what to do with our property and our lives? Not something I quite understand but rather petty.

Hopefully this ends anyone's concern for application and access rights to prevent piracy. Opera Mini is a "FREE" web browser however, NOT a trusted installer known by this model 6263.
Though they have it available for 6267 gets me.

Take care!

I'm having the exact same problem. I just got a brand new 6263 on the April 18, and I can't install it either. It's really annoying because the browser installed really sucks. Who are they(T-Mobile or Nokia) to tell me what I am ALLOWED to install on my own phone?!?!

Posted by: hzlmain

T-Mobile has locked this thing up so users WONT be able to download and use third party internet applications such as Opera Mini 4 or Agile Messenger.

Posted by: timmy1729

I am going to use my 6263 as it is for a while. But, when there is an unbranded firmware available for it that works, I'm installing it so I can use this thing how I wish.

i emailed nokia and they said it's a T-mobile issue.
I contacted t-mobile and their technical support team doesn't even have the brightest clue on how to fix this problem only seems as if they do know and aren't allowed to troubleshoot this issue probably because to reduce the amount of calls for troubleshooting and issues therefore, to save t-mobile money. There wouldn't be any other reason as to why they wouldn't let anyone use their phone to their discretion. I do believe as well that that is against constitutional rights to prevent people to do what they want with their product in some form of matter. I hate communism!

well, my wife is getting my 6263 because she doesn't use the phone browser just the IM programs pre-installed.

I'm getting the 6267 so that I can do whatever the **** i choose to!
Another note,
It appears that t-mobile has also blocked the phone from being able to switch over to EGPRS (EDGE) when in that particular service area such as Chicago.

I'm an Over the road truck driver and have just about been through every single EDGE network area for t-mobile and my phone only stays on "G" (GPRS).

I believe this is a scam t-mobile is getting away with.
Spending 200 bucks for a phone that has default limitations. Never am I buying another T-mobile phone as long as I live. I'm sticking to Unlocked/Unbranded GSM phones from now on!

The 6263 does use EDGE, but for some reason T-Mobile removed the 'E' indicator, so it will display 'G' for GPRS, EDGE, and 3G.

Dumb question, but why the heck would they do that? I know what you're saying my Moto SLVR L7 came with support for Edge too but the indicator was disabled. I fixed that modding it. Still doesn't explain why they wouldn't let people use Innocent apps like Opera Mini and Google maps.

That a very good question. I have no idea why they do that. I'd like to know when I'm on Edge or just GPRS. I keep my 6263 as a backup phone because I can't stand not being able to use certain apps.

I would rather have a situation where they let me do whatever I want on MY phone, but in my service agreement they put that they will only give customer support for certain things and not others. That way they don't waste time and money and the customer gets to use their phone as they wish. Or is that just too simple for a giant corporation to do?

Once you go unlocked you never go back.
I had no idea how much Tmo crippled until I stopped buying their branded phones

Posted by: timmy1729

I agree. I got this 6263 to replace my N91 which was unlocked. The T-Mobile cripple has been very annoying on my 6263. I just couldn't afford an unlocked one this time

Oh, but next phone(if I can afford it then): unlocked from then on, baby!

Is it too much to ask to be able to use OperaMini and a file explorer?

Cheers!

Posted by: Hinano

I actually don't mind Nokia's default file browser. I never bothered getting opera mini - seeing stuff like news weather & my blog seems to be good enough on the nokia browser itself..i wonder why people like OM so much?

A provider might do that to head off a potential "problem" of users calling in to complain that they're only seeing EDGE service instead of GPRS. There are also people out there that would call in to ask why it the letter went from a "G" to an "E". The vast majority of users don't know the difference, don't know that there are firmware versions that can differentiate the two, or don't care one way or the other. Having just a single "G" saves on complaints (and has the added bonus of "covering up" GPRS only areas).

Providers cripple handsets for similar reasons. By not letting end users install apps, you save them from themselves. End users can't install programs that kill their phones. They also won't call in and bug CC when that third party app misbehaves or crashes. It also lets the provider push the users towards their sanctioned apps that can be a revenue driver (or prevent apps that might result in lower revenues). Again, you also have the vast majority of users that don't realize their handset has been crippled, don't realize there are handsets that aren't crippled, or don't care one way or the other.

It's all in the provider's favor to cripple handsets, and that's why they do it. The only way it's in the manufacturer's interest to cripple a handset would be if a provider asked them to do it. In this case, it's T-mobile's fault that the 6263 is crippled, not Nokia's. If Nokia were to sell a version of the 6263 direct to the end user, they'd likely sell it unlocked, unbranded and uncrippled (three distinct things). Once that happens, there's a fairly good chance people who bought their 6263 through T-mobile will be able to gain app access to their handset too.

Personally, I'd be happy if I could install a good browser (Opera Mini fits that bill) and mapping software (Google Maps has been a lifesaver at times). If I could install GMail and a chat program that uses data instead of text messages, that'd be icing on the cake. I can do that now with my current handset. I'd like to be able to do that with a T-mobile 3G handset too, but can't.

What's interesting to me is that the owner's manual is not T-Mobile specific and lists the G and E icons. I wonder why T-Mobile wouldn't have made an owner's manual that matched the software on the phone.

If I may quote myself; Upon further inspection of the 6263 manual, it appears that portions of the manual mention T-Zones, but other portions mention settings that don't even exist with the current software.

yes, its pretty annoying, until you can not even change the "Right Shortcut key" from t-zones to something else. Dont believe? Try it...For now this 6263 will be my spare phone until somebody manage to unbrand this phone.

It's not going to matter anymore.

My wife and I are going to be switching to Alltel here soon as our bankruptcy is finalized. They want 900 deposit for 3 lines on a family plan. Yikes, but at least they'll offer a better service and plan AND THEY HAVE 3G/EVDO TOO!!!

we're getting the Samsung Hue. very nice nice phone, does everything I want out of a phone and high speed internet with phone. I've already signed up for their Broadband internet plan and purchased their Kyocera Data card for my new laptop that's on it's way to my house Today as a matter of fact!

Toshiba X205-9810 Gaming laptop! I'll be able to play Call of Duty 4 and Battlefield 2 online finally and on a decent laptop other than my Acer Extensa 5420 which can't even play Spearhead properly on some levels!

Sorry, this talk about Electronics makes me excited.

Well... not in a nasty way ha ha!

I go fly with Alltel and be happy again!

T-mobile's fault they issue phones crippled.

You know what they should do?? They should sell the phones as they do BUT, offer a solution for advanced users like myself and others here @ howard forums where you can take your crippled phone into a T-mobile store and pay like 3 bucks or something and have them reprogram phone to uncripple it. They'd probably make you sign an agreement form so they don't claim responsibility for any problems we might have with 3rd party programs.

I think that would help boast their profit but like I said.

Tuff luck T-mobile, you are loosing a valuable customer!

I have friends who swear by their Alltel service. I, on the other hand, will never go back to a CDMA provider. I love having the ability to swap my sim card into an unbranded phone from Europe.

Yeah true. That is a good point! It makes nice for phone hackers but It doesn't matter anymore, eventually hopefully there will be hacks for the Hue.

Alltel is being purchased now for something like 27 billion that includes all the debt that Alltel was in, and guess who's buying them out?
VERIZON ?!

oh boy! I'm kinda pissed now, hopefully the MyCircle plans won't decease and will offer good rates just as it is now before they are fully acquired.

Verizon so far as well as Sprint offers the fastest EVDO wireless broadband internet service through a PCMCIA or 32bit Expansion card for laptops and thru your EVDO enabled phones.

with Alltel's network combined with Verizon's hopefully Verizon's won't be all screwy as it is now, and will widely double the service area for both mobile and EVDO internet customers.

My wife now sadly are gonna have to wait because we both hate Verizon for their Higher Class costs, and lousy phone selections.

We're hoping it will look good and won't have to suffer with T-mobile.

Plus, T-mobile is "Slowly" introducing their 3G/HSDPA network. It's already up and running in New York, NY. Not sure how fast they'll have it up but i'm sure i won't be able to try it out by the time we're with Alltel/Verizon :-\ Hopefully they keep the name Alltel for people who don't like the name "Verizon"
