Can an iPod be shared from computer to computer?

My brought over his iPod the other day and I said I would share some of my music. He connected his iPod and it prompted him about deleting his library?

I was under the impression that one could connect an iPod from computer to computer to take music but that you couldnt take music off an iPod and place it onto a computer OTHER than your own.

No? Can someone clear this up?

I believe if you sync with iTunes you can't go between computers, but if you treat the iPod as a storage drive you can go on different computers. Of course, this only works for unprotected formats like MP3s.

You can't take music from multiple iTunes libraries. It's to prevent piracy. That poses a problem when you reformat your computer and haven't backed up your library; friends of mine have sync'd their iPods to their newly formatted, empty computers and erased their iPods by mistake.

I've done it before. You just need to have the Sync set to "Manually Manage". If it's on Auto-Sync then you can only use your home computer. If you try on a second computer it will format the ipod and replace it with that library, or you can cancel and nothing happens.

Thanks! So we can do a drag and drop deal by putting music into the folder via the storage drive method...

There are programs like Senuti for Mac that let you copy music to/from iPods...you can't use iTunes in auto mode.

That is exactly how you do it, open it under it's drive letter, enable hidden folders, and open the ipod control folder and there it is.

It won't work with protected AAC files, and the file names will be 4 letter files, but the id3 tags will still be intact.

Wirelessly posted (neuro-devixe: Opera/8.01 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/3.0.6655/1724; en; U; ssr))

That is complete BS from apple.
If i bought my ipod and my mp3's with my hard earned money, i should be able to do whatever i want with them as i please.
