transferring personal music files to phone

I have recently bought a Motorola KRZR K1 and have since learned that the only songs/ringtones I can use on my phone are the ones provided (which are very few) or the ones I buy from the Rogers Music Store (which I refuse to do since this phone is at my budget limit). It came with a USB cable and I have tried a couple things.
I have succeeded in transferring about 10 songs from my personal library over to my phone's audio section but am unable to play them in the Rogers Music Player unless they're stored on my phone (about 5 max!). I know if I'm able to figure out how to store them on my memory card using Rogers Music Player, I'll be able to play more songs and have more space on my actual phone.
The guy from Rogers said I should come to this site for tips on how to change the file extension to be able to play it (ie. change from .mp3). I don't know all the technical lingo (hence why I'm posting a thread, because I am lost). Any help would be greatly appreciated!
