Iphone user:

Is there a way to turn off safari and data related functions on Iphone. I have simple phone needs, want to hold down my monthly costs by using a pay as you go plan and don't want to be surprised by a steep data bill.

I am afraid that I will accidently click on an icon and the iphone will perform other data type internet calls. The other day I noticed that my iphone reached out to automatically update software. I disabled the email by eliminating my address, but cannot find a way turn off the internet/data calling functions.

I asked an Apple iphone rep. if I can turn off the data and he said that it is impossible. He said that any time that the E shows at the upper left of Iphone then the phone is automatically reaching out to the internet and tapping the data side of plan and I am being billed 2 centers per kilobyte through the pay as you go plan. I think a user should be able to decide if he wants to use the data function and be able to turn off this function!

Of course the Apple rep. said that I should go to an ATT store and get a credit check number and then call to talk to an Apple iphone to properly register the iphone under the pay as you go and retain my warranty. This is strange since I AM an ATT customer and no different than if I registered through "proper" means.

I accessed programs at Zibri's Blog to unlock (probably wrong term) my 16gb Iphone and allow me to use another sim if I so choose.

Any suggestions or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Ken

You can delete edge settings if you want to disable data connections for the long term. If you want to be able to to turn it on and off on demand, you can use a tool called BossPref on a jail broken phone to enable and disable edger whenever you want.

Oh. But the edge symbol still shows.. but under usage the KB stops going up. Does this mean im still using edge but its not charging me anymore?

Jumran and Sprungson, How is the best way to get BossPref and load it? It would be nice to be able to turn it on and off at from the iphone. Can BossPref do this?

The E icon just means Edge is available.

BossPrefs is the best way to enable/disable edge whenever you want. You can install if from the installer app on a jail broken phone. Just add the following source

http://sleepers.net/~iphone/repo.xml

Once you add the source, BossPreffs will be available under Utilities.

If you don't ever plan on using edge, then the best thing to do would be to delete edge settings.
