the last few days i've notice a 3g speed slow down on my tilt. I've done multiple speed tests over the last two days and have been getting nothing higher than 300 kbs. I live in brooklyn and work in manhatten and have tested the speeds in both area. Before i was getting speeds no less then 700 kbs....anyone else in NYC having this issue?

I was in NYC and LI(Long Island) last weekend and I experienced speeds in the 1Mbps range on my Aircard 875 which is slow in comparison to Southeastern Florida where I experience speeds in the 1.6-1.9Mbps range.

You are witnessing the effects of increased traffic on those 3G channels.

I've always noticed that when tethering speed is about 2x faster than on the phone itself and even faster(3x or better) using a card, so I always quote the method! Next time I'm in NYC ill give it a try, if anything is oversold there Sprint should be.

CPU capabilities play a big role in data speeds. When tethering, your phone is merely an RF tuner that converts and passes the data to your computer, which has a more powerful CPU than your phone, hence the faster speeds. When connecting the internet in your phone (not tethering) the phone is doing all the work (receiving, demodulating, processing, decoding, etc.) hence it is slower.

data traffic in NYC is higher than other markets
see it happens on Sprint, as well as T-Mobile (the latter suffers more due to GSM network)
T-Mobile UMTS is active today, the speed is very good, but I expect it'll be slower about a week later as more users jump on 3G
