Are SIM-based unlocks out-of-style now?

I seem to recall at one point, TurboSIM and other *SIM based solutions were all the rage for "unlocking" your iPhone - offering the benefits of not needing to muck around with the low-levels of the phone (baseband/bootloader).

With the advent of ZiPhone, iPlus/iLiberty, and now iPwnage ... have these SIM-based solutions all gone by the wayside? I'd think there would still be some appeal for them out there. For instance, I'm a legit AT&T customer and don't have any plan/need to change that - but for traveling overseas, it sure would be nice to use a local prepaid SIM from time to time. Just thought I'd check in and see what the collective wisdom from the group was on these ...

yeah they went from about $100 a piece to basically worthless now. People are still trying to sell them based on the fact that software unlocking your iphone is 'potentially dangerous and could brick the phone' but that is bs and a lot of people have tons of these 25 cent microchips to sell.

If you are going to travel overseas then it is a good idea to have one, im sure there are only like $10 bucks to buy now. Then you just have to cut the prepaid sim and not your own. I remember people saying that you had to jailbreak your iphone to get these to work but that was probably just to bypass activation.

LOL. I have 2 now worthless stealthsims. Think I bought em off ebay for like $85 a piece. Only got about a month or 2 worth of use when geohotz cracked the 1.1.2 firmware. Now they are in a junk drawer somewhere. What a waste.

I was considering getting one, seems easier than reading through threads...
Last time i had an iphone was 1.0.2.

Do you need to glue your SIM or is it just cutting?

You may need it again when firmware 2.0 comes out in June. :-)

you just cut on corner of your sim off, hold them together like a sandwich, put them in the sim tray and carefully put the tray back in the phone. I'm not sure how well it fits in other phones but would probably be ok if you were careful. Theres vids on youtube and stuff showing how to cut and install these sim solutions.

Are there places I can get one for ~$10-$20 now?

would anyone be willing to sell me their old one for $10-20

I looked at the StealthSIM and TurboSIM sites, and they're still quite expensive. Rather surprised by that, as their sales must have dropped significantly with the release of ziphone, iliberty/iplus, and pwnage ...
