I have a Bootloader concern and a few questions?

I am fairly new to the whole Jailbreaking scene and know a bit of things here and there. I keep reading about the bootloader and how important it is. Not exactly sure of what it does so I am in the dark on this one.

I used Ziphone, with absolutely no problems, to Unlock and Jailbreak my 8GB iPhone with 1.1.4 firmware. It worked like a charm and I have had no issues or problems with my iPhone since doing this. I keep hearing bad things about Ziphone and how it permanently locks in your bootloader to 3.9.

Now… my concerns and questions are this.

1. Is having a 3.9 bootloader a bad thing? I am sure older iPhones have different bootloaders.

2. Is this going to affect the upcoming 2.0 firmware and will I be able to download and use it?

3. I have read there is something called “Bootneuter”, will this fix the problems that Ziphone has done to our iPhones?

4. Is there something else that can be done to help this issue?

I guess I am in the dark and need some answers and help with this issue.

Doesn't matter anymore, new tools allow you to move back and forth easily.

2. Is this going to affect the upcoming 2.0 firmware and will I be able to download and use it?
Nop, see answer one.

3. I have read there is something called “Bootneuter”, will this fix the problems that Ziphone has done to our iPhones?

There is no problem, Ziphone downgrades your bootloader irreversibly to 3.9, now with the release of pwnage/bootneuter recently you can upgrade back.

4. Is there something else that can be done to help this issue?
What issue?

I guess I am in the dark and need some answers and help with this issue.

You could try to read more, all your questions have been answered in this very forum umpteen times.

Why wouldn't you want to use Pwnage? BootNeuter does require Pwnage.

No mac. I did find Bootneuter in Installer though.

Also iphonecake.com has it too.

Thanks for the sources, it worked I think. What did unlocking the baseband do? Did that unlock my phone or is that something different? I don't need my phone unlocked but don't care if it is. It did it awhen I used BootNeurter although i could have checked off I guess.

yes, you can use bootneuter independently. but I would do it with pwnage when i need to restore firmware or update to a new version, no point messing about for no reason, unless you need bootloader 4.6 for some reason, like trying for warranty.

I'm new to this too, but I will try to answer your questions as best as i know.

1. Its a bad in once sense because it can void your warranty if apple finds that your phone serial # is part of a range that came with 4.6 out of the box. In terms of function of the iphone it self, it is not a bad thing.

2. It really should not , because the early iPhone owners would be severely impacted by this kind of a move, if they cannot upgrade to 2.0 there would be a big uproar. then again Apple can do whatever it wants so at this point is a wait and see kind of thing.

3. Pwnage tool is the one that can potentially save ppl like you and me ( same situation as you for myself). Evidently it allows upgrading the bootloader code back to 4.6. However it is not available for windows yet. Its coming out soon though.

4. Honestly I dont think its a big deal at this point in time. First of all there is no easy way to detect your bootloader by Apple if you bring it into the store. for service or whatever ( I am not condoning this). If you do need to bring your iphone to the store the jailbreak from ziphone is fully reversable and your phone will be back to factory settings except for the bootloader.

My personal opinion, leave the phone as it is. IF you feel it neccesary to upgrade the bootloader back to 4.6, I would wait till this winpwn tool comes out and its tested and do it then.

Thanks all for the info and help.

Well, I decided to try Bootneuter. It worked perfectly and now I am back to 4.6. Everything works with no problems at all. So it is possible to change around the bootloader without using pwnage at this point in time, since us windows users dont have access to pwnage yet.

akaclarkkent... you can check your system info (bootloader) with the BBInfo app. Check you "All Packages"

I did download that and it confirmed it did work. I did notice that it reset my IMEI back to factory. I had changed it with Ziphone. Also, at first I had a very low speaker volume but I fixed by restarting my phone.

What did the baseband unlock on BootNeurter do? I left it as on.

All I really did was download the Bootneuter app from installer. Also downloaded BBinfo also.
Made sure my iPhone was really set at 3.9 witht he BBinfo app. Restarted my iPhone and then proceeded to run Bootneuter with Neuter ON, FakeBlank OFF, and Unlock ON and then hit Flash (make sure you have Autolock to Off though). 3 minutes later it was done. Checked back with BBinfo and presto... it was at 4.6. That was it. Really easy and really painless. Make sure you also restart your iPhone afterwards too.

Thanks man, did you have to undo any of the Ziphone stuff? like restore back to 1.1.4 stock with Itunes?

Posted by: kevman

Nevermind, I just did it, literally the easiest thing I ever did!

Posted by: moviecouple

Really is a piece of cake to do.

Posted by: dsigma6

So you run bootneuter and still have a functioning unlocked phone, just with the bootloader changed? That'd be great.

Posted by: moviecouple

Yes, that is exactly what happends.
