W300i volume

Hello everyone.
My uncle bought what looks to me like debranded W300i (originally branded by AT&T and someone flashed OEM firmware, I suspect). Anyways, the buttons on the side with arrows to control volume or ringtone switching, are not active. Everytime I press up or down, it only shows me phone info screen. I believe the AT&T firmware was setup that those buttons could increase/decrease ringing volume and ultimately to switch to vibrate/silent modes. Anyway I can reprogram those for him?
Also, for some reason when I pair my Moto H700 headset and make an outgoing call, I can hear the other party, but they can't hear me. Is this something wrong with the phone setting/profile, or my headset is gone?
I am someowhat familiar with most of the tools, just point me in the right direction, and I will try my best. Thanks for any info anyone can provide.

On most (if not all) current Sony Ericssons, the volume button leads to the phone status when not on a call or using it's media plater. AT&T added that feature to make the phone more user-friendly, but you can still change the volume by going into settings>sounds and alerts tab>volume.
