HOW CAN I USE LG SHINE as a DUN Modem with a LAPTOP?

A dear friend of mine has just recently gotten the unlimited data plan and a new LG Shine with AT&T. She's also got a sweet laptop running Vista. Is there any way using Bluetooth to tether her laptop to her cell phone and make use of her 3G connection that way?

Two things. Bluetooth for tethering is painfully slow. You're better off on dial up. Second, tethering is a separate feature....and AT&T is monitoring data usage for signs of tethering or other improper use of 3g signals.

i tether thru bluetooth a lot, and its not bad at all. i think its fine for speeds up to maybe 800Kbps. make sure you open the bluetooth connection and set the baud rate to maximum. it defauls to 115000 and you have to change it to 921600.

she certainly can tether with her plan, buts its not the "correct" plan. i do the same with my account on the media net unlimited plan. i just dont abuse it with full DVD and streaming downloads, and it should be fine. i basically check email and surf the web, nothing more (since that's what i would do on the phone browser anyway).

Why is BT said to be slow? That is how I tether with my Tilt and is seems pretty fast to me. How could I get better speed?

I think it depends on teh BT version on the phone and PC adapter:

Version 1.2: 1mbit/s
Version 2.0: 3mbit/s

and if its anything like wifi, you'll see roughly 50-60% of theoretical.

USB is better imo

I was using Bluetooth but it got to be slow so I switched back to the usb cable route.

OK, I must be dumb....where do I do this on my Tilt?

You don't have to do anything on the phone. On your computer you use to tether, go to network neighborhood and find the bluetooth connection. Right click then properties. Then configure. Find baud and change it to the max setting. Take note of what the connection shows on the bottom right of your desktop when you first connect. It usually has a little pop up window with the max connection speed. It should read 921.6kbps if you have it too max.

OK, now I'm getting dumber by the minute. I'm on Vista. I'm in Device Manager and see nothing like this at all!!! Maybe it's Monday here......

One thing I have found is when I right click on the Network and Sharing Center and look at the BT connection status, I'm getting a flat 1.0Mbps speed. Not bad for a tether!!!

OK i meant to say Windows XP defaults to the lower speed. i'm assuming Vista creates a tethered connect with more smarts, and the speed is already set to max. not totally sure i never used vista.

I wondered if that wasn't the case. Vista, no matter what everyone says, is just better than XP in a lot of ways.

Roger, what do we put in for the phone#?

Did tethering with an LG work out? I just got a new laptop with Vista and couldn't tether my phone. Called LG and they said they don't have any drivers that run with Vista yet, even on newer phones.

I probably have to get a new non-LG phone for tethering to work with Vista on the new laptop. But let me know if you found a way to make it work
