Best place to purchase AT&T tilt

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Looks like the price of the Tilt went up today (at least on the AT&T and buy.com websites). Where's the best place to get one now? Can the 30-day trial still be used if I buy from a place online (like buy.com)? I'm assuming I'll have to pay for the return shipping if decide to return it within 30 days correct?

Thanks!

myrateplan.com
amazon.com
letstalk.com
wirefly.com

In that order... good luck!

Posted by: Wayno-san

Thanks for the reply... it looks like myrateplan.com has some strange return policies. I haven't read throught their fineprint completely but it doesn't look like I could do a 30 day trail through them without having to jump through some hoops. Have you had any experience with them? The price is certainly right thought!

Peace,
Wayno

I had a chance to review the websites today, and although they're probably fine for someone who knows AT&T will work for them, they were a turn-off for me due to the short trial periods of 15 days or 30 minutes... whichever is first. I do not feel that that is enough time for me to judge the performance of the cell service. I was going to order a refurb unit through the AT&T website but then I started reading about the video driver problems with the Tilt and have decided to hold off until such time that HTC fixes the issue.

Thanks again for the help,
Wayno-san

for the 30 minutes.. instead you should have used gotten a prepaid at&t sim card, same network, same signal strength, thats how i tested it. If i had good reception in my house i would go with AT&T, and i did.
BTW, even if you don't activate the card or you have an old SIM card from your friend, if you put it in the phone (unlocked one or AT&T branded one that is ), it will tell you that you can't make calls but it will still show the signal strength
when it comes to the issue on video drivers on the tilt,yes..they suck and video is horrible but i didn't even tried testing videos on the tilt till few weeks ago (even tho i knew the driver issues and i could adjust and compensate to the drivers viewable bitrate) well to me.. the good outweigh the bad, and if i wanna watch a video on a portable i will grab my 30GB zune filled with videos and movies with bigger screen and watch it on that. Thats just me tho

linuXshock,
That's a fine idea but unfortunately I do not have access to any AT&T phones or SIM cards. MOst of my friends are either on Verizon or T-MObile. Buying a phone outright would cost me more than going with the "30 day trial" option that AT&T offers. I suppose I could get one of their cheap phones but maybe the Tilt is still the way to go if I can sell it on eBay for a hundred after the 3G iPhone comes out. There's no subsidies on those phones anyway.

I'm not sure if I should dish out the $199 price for a refurbished model and just order it from AT&T (and get 30 days to try out there network) or go for the limited 30 minute trial and get a new phone for half that.

Peace,
Wayno-san

ps: Nice today screen! Are you able to sync the Tilt with Linux?

Posted by: linuXshock

i used linux about a year ago, i switched to windows because of my work

Posted by: Wayno-san

Dual-boot then! Or run Windows inside Linux with VMWare.... I dual boot to Linux Mint. Still have some issues with my RAID0 drive and such but overall it's great... plus it's the only way I can still use my old scanner and printer.

What's your opinion... will HTC issue a fix for the video driver issues?

Peace,
Wayno-san

Posted by: linuXshock

i think they will eventually. They are probobly gonna do it when they are sick of people calling them/and or AT&T to complain about the issue.
They might just wait till WM6.1 officially comes out and then release the update for Tilt that has the video issue resoloved and the new version of the OS all in one

Posted by: Wayno-san

That would certainly be nice... I did my part in signing the petition and sending HTC a complaint email. I haven't received a response to the latter yet. I'll try giving them a call this week also.

Peace,
Wayno

the question is...will we have to pay for the update?

http://htc.letstalk.com

Same exact deal as myrateplan.com and letstalk.com, but it seems HTC is throwing in a $100 coupon towards accessories... Granted, the only accessories are bluetooth headsets (no jawbone), but free is free...

Posted by: CRUZR

I just ordered the refurb Tilt from ATT for $149.99. Have 30 day trial to test it out...

Good luck,
Gary

Posted by: Wayno-san

It blows my mind that AT&T does not price their phones to be competitive with the other online merchants.... the $300 Tilt can be had for free from other places (with a plan of course).

Posted by: livestrong

I just ordered a Refurb'ed Tilt directly from AT&T for $0.00. They have a package deal right now.

Posted by: jakster

Thats good to know. Wife has been wanting one of them since seeing that her friend has one.

Posted by: Wayno-san

Out of stock. :*(

I read up on letstalk.com and with all the negative feedback I think I'm going to stay away even though it would have been nice to get a free stereo bluetooth headset.

still looking for a Tilt?

For what it's worth, I ordered my Tilt and a new AT&T contract through htc.letstalk.com and received the phone two days later as promised, with the free Jabra BT8040.

The number port went through with no delays, and while I haven't had to call CS for any reason, the communication (order status, tracking number, etc.) has been very good... Hope this helps you make your decision.

Posted by: Wayno-san

I'm concerned with what happens next... like will you ever get the rebate... will you get support if you have a problem. That's what most of the complaints were about. I hope everything keeps going smoothly for you thought!

I think I'll play is safe and order a refurb through AT&T so I get the 30 day trial and hopefully any support I need should I run into problems.

Is that BT8040 stereo? There was one headset on there that was marked as Stereo but it looked mono to me and I thought it was the BT8040 if I remember correctly.

Take care and thanks for the feedback!

I have to wait the six months or so before I can submit the letstalk.com rebate, so I (obviously) can't comment on how smooth that transaction will go

I'm always a bit wary on MIR's, but I figured with the price I paid up front ($200) minus the AT&T rebate ($50) even if letstalk decided to screw me on their rebate, I still "only" paid $150 for the tilt- plus the free BT headset helped sweeten the deal.

The BT8040 is mono since it's only a single earbud- but it's tiny (which I wanted), and it supports A2DP so it'll act as a headset- albeit only in mono.

If in 6 months you still haven't purchased your Tilt, I'll update this thread with my rebate status

That's a very good point! I ended up going with the refurb package option via the AT&T website. The sucky thing is that I couldn't do it on the Premier website since they didn't offer this "refurb package" (they wanted $150) so I'm going to have to go the long-way about it and request my plan discount after the fact.... This might backfire because they say it might take a couple of billing cycles to kick in and I had to pay a $36 activation fee. On top of that I don't "officially" work for the company any longer (I just quit last month) but I do have a recent pay-stub so hopefully that will all go well.

If worse-comes-to-worse I'll return it before the 30 days are up and at least I will know how well the AT&T coverage is around here since I've never used their service before. If the refurb or anything else about the phone sucks then I'll return it and re-order a new one in a month or so.

Do you have this "rebate" yet? If so, would you mind emailing it to me or posting it? I'd like to read the fine print. I emailed letstalk.com and asked them to email it to me but they ignored the request and just answered the first question that I asked (about when the "trial" period starts).

Peace,
Wayno-san

Here's the information from the rebate form. Seems straight forward enough- they even filled out the form for me, all I have to do is attach a barcode from the box and mail it within specific dates with a copy of a recent bill from AT&T.

Posted by: Wayno-san

Thanks for posting the info.... kind of crazy that they want you to go through them whenever you want to make a change but if you're the type that doesn't mess with his plan much then I guess it's fine. I'm not sure if I would be eligible then because I would definitely try to get the business discount and I think in order to get that you have to deal directly with AT&T. I emailed them that exact question three days ago and they never responded to it.

Looks like even though the AT&T website states that they're out of the refurbished Tilt package they are not... I ordered one yesterday and tracking shows it arriving tomorrow.

Peace,
Wayno-san

Got mine today, but it has to go back. It won't load to the home screen with a SIM card in the phone. They did upgrade my shipping to overnight so I should have the new one by Monday.

Posted by: Wayno-san

I got mine also but unless someone can tell me how to fix the D-pad mine is going to have to go back too. When the d-pad moves around (there is a lot of play) sometimes it will not register presses.. aditionally the space bar makes an annoying double click about half the time.... it fels like I pressed two keys. I liked the keyboard on the XV6800 (mogul) better.

Does anyone know........

I would love to take advantage of this free Tilt offer. I have a family plan with 2 phones. I would love to just add a 3rd line with this phone. It appears you must start a new plan, and also add the $30 data plan. Does anyone know a way to take advantage of the free offer, but just adding it as a 3rd line.

Calling AT&T twice didn't really do any good. One rep told me there was no such offer. I asked her to go to www.wireless.att.com to see. She mentioned there was no Refurb PDA Offers out there and it wasn't on their site. Started to think I was crzy/dreaming... and let the call go.

Called back again. I was told I had to pay $149 for a refurb to upgrade my line. I have access to the Premier site and it is $149 to "upgrade". I guess I cannot upgrade for free. I was also told I cannot just add a new line of service with this phone for free.

Just curious if anyone knows the scoop on this promo.

Thanks!!!!!
