Hey guys,

Just wanted to let you know a little bit of news from my world: after a huge amount of thought, introspection and planning, I've decided that I want to pursue an MBA to achieve the next levels of my career in the mobile and wireless industry. So last fall I applied to full-time MBA programs around the US that have a strong focus on technology, and I'm thrilled to have been accepted to the NYU Stern School of Business and UC Berkeley Haas School of Business.

What this means for the community here probably isn't much, but it does mean I will no longer be an "insider" in the industry (at least for two years until I rejoin the business world); I'll no longer be attending trade shows like CES and CTIA; and I may possibly not be able to contribute as much to HoFo once I matriculate to school this fall. I say possibly because I'll certainly try to be here as much as I can; I consider HoFo a key part of my ongoing education in the mobile industry.

So all that said, anyone have thoughts on NYU vs. Berkeley? That's a big decision!

Posted by: Ishimaru

Wow US, I wish you all the best, and good luck. In terms of schools, I truly have no idea, but Berkley is close to me :P I truly have no idea, but I hope you excell at everything you do. And besides, you'll always be a member of this community (insider info or not).

either sounds cool. good luck.

Posted by: micaels

Really cool. Urban I wish all the luck! After taking courses at the university here in Gothenburg I plan to pursue a program this fall.

Berkeley, no competition! All those Nobel laureates .. free thinkers .. awesome campus .. great city!

Good Luck US.....I wish I could contribute to your choice but my experience with any MBA program is limited to Canada. Both sound like excellent choices man.....good luck.

NYU all da way!! u get to stay in the city u've grown to love and appreciate so much plus Stern's a great business school. as far as the mobile industry, nowhere else in the country is the unlocked gsm market more vibrant then NYC.

Posted by: maevro

You cannot go wrong with Stern as it is the apex of business schools. Congrats with any decision that you make as it can only benefit you in the future. I am going to Hunter for my MSW part time, I just wish I could do it full time.

My only advice is to not burn yourself out. Go at a comfortable pace and make sure you keep a comfortable balance in your life.

Wow...Urban.....MBA!

Wherever you decide, I think, will be a great decision. UWO here in my home town of London Ont. have a great MBA prgram. I know a few people who have graduated from it and have pretty much written their own ticket afterwards.

It's pretty intense. My wife is presently working on her masters in the medical field and I know what her work load is like. I think your time here at Hofo is going to suffer. This will be OUR loss. Your contribution, not just here at Hofo, but for the mobile community as a whole, is substantial. Your efforts are a very positive force in the community.

Good luck...and I'm confident you will make us proud.

Dave

Truth be known....that's why Urban is talking about there as well.

Posted by: RayanMX

I'd say Berkeley...

Well, lots of technology buffs have gone to UC Berkeley right?

I've been there (my brother in law graduated a few years ago) and sure looks like a great Campus and awesome sister cities all around.

Great place indeed.

Good luck on your MBA!

THANKS guys! I really appreciate all the support. This will be a huge life change and won't be easy, but hopefully it'll mean I'll be even more plugged into the mobile tech industry in the future.

Btw, I had my NYU Stern preview weekend this past weekend and it was awesome. So far I love it there. I have a similar weekend coming up for Berkeley in May, so my challenge will be to not fall head-over-heels in love with springtime weather in the Bay Area. Exciting stuff!

That is a tough decision. East coast or West coast? I would probably pick the one that will make it easiest on me achieving my Masters. Also possibly if you go out West you might place into something out West. Would you want to live there? Which place has a better pulse/inside connection on the wireless world. I would think maybe California since it's so close to Asia and has a large tech industry to begin with. Are you going to work at all or just do school? Have fun.

Good luck, Urban.

Posted by: pen25

congrats US. good luck and dont stray too far away.

Posted by: Urban Strata

Thanks juiceppc & pen25, too!

I attended NYU's preview weekend this past weekend and had lunch with Google's North American director of sales and a vice president for NBC Universal's mobile content division. Wow! So far I'm leaning toward NYU, but I'm traveling out to Berkeley again soon to hear (and see) their perspective.

With Berkeley grads including Shantanu Narayen, president of Adobe; Paul Otellini, president and CEO of Intel; Arun Sarin, CEO of Vodafone and countless others, Berkeley may be hard to turn down... but I'll keep you all posted on how it goes.

Regardless, if I can achieve the higher/highest levels of business in the mobile and wireless industry, you can guarantee HoFo will get some tender loving care!

Posted by: pen25

all i can say is CAL! BEARS! not alum but i can say that is my college football team. volleyball is Stanford. i know im crazy. but im all about pac10!

Posted by: Urban Strata

Thanks again, everyone.

I'm about 99.9% locked on Berkeley (the current CEOs of Intel, Vodafone and Adobe went there, after all), but any other thoughts? Any Berkeley grads here who can comment on the experience? Any tips or tricks I should know?

To quote LL...

Going back to Cali, stylin, profilin
Growlin, and smilin, while in the sun
The top is down, on the black Corvette
And it's fly, cause it's sittin on Dayton's
Laurents steering wheel, plushed out, gold-leaf phantom top
and three girls waiting
VRRRROOM engine's blowin, the chrome, is shining
Passing all the cars on the way
Movement of the wind, back wheels spin
Pop in a cassette and push play

since i cannot say any experiance since im not an alum i can say i know several alum who absolutly loved it. 2 were master degree holders who went on to harvard and 1 has thier phd from cal i know other under grads and can say it is very laid back. and a true culture mix. the hippys are still there as well as all the tech geeks and of course the athletes. i have been there many times and always loved it.

I used to live in Albany, which is next to Berkeley. My Ex attended Cal, so I've been to the campus many times. You can't beat the setting and atmosphere there. As Pen25 said, the laid back atmosphere is great and allows one to concentrate on things. Multi-ethnic for sure and heck of a place to attend college, given the sheer academic brilliance of their alumn.

So many colleges tried to recruit Jason Kidd (local kid) around the time I lived in the area, but even he opted for Cal, as it's such a cool campus! Also, it's just a little ways to San Francisco, which has gotta be one of the most interesting big cities in North America (Don't call it "Frisco" lol).

and yet ur choosing Berkeley over NYU? I'm shocked...I'd sell my left kidney to finish my bachelors and masters @ NYU..Sterns is such a great business school...instead of looking at how many great alums came from berkeley. why don't you look at it as a challenge? to be the start of a tradition of the most talented business individuals involved in the mobile industry here in the NorthEast who chose to go to Sterns...and envelope themselves and their careers around the Capital of the world!

If that didn't convince you, maybe a Long Island Ice Tea would...

NYU is a great school. just as Georgetown Harvard MIT. theres more to a degree then just the school work. but one has to understand alums are needed. just like frats they can help a person out. and ultimately US will make the decision thats best for him. plus so much cheaper out in cali compaired to the city. you can live north in the woods where its really cheap or the bay where its super expensive well ok about as much as the city.

NYU is a great school. So is Berkeley. By most accounts Berkeley is slightly better in the full-time MBA rankings (no. 7 in US News & World Report vs. No. 10 for NYU), but rankings mean nothing compared to what a school means to you and where it can get you for your particular need.

And that's the thing. Business school is not about academics, per se, it's about the network you build through that business school, alumni, professors and others associated with the program. As much as I love New York City, I have to admit Berkeley is miles ahead of NYU in terms of its tech network; Berkeley's proximity to Silicon Valley is incomparable, while NYU's proximity to Wall Street brands it as more of a "finance school."

Now I still have to decide that Berkeley is a good fit for me, and I'm very much a New York City kinda guy. So I'm heading out there April 30-May 3 for Berkeley's Days at Haas preview weekend, which will be my deciding factor. I'll let you guys know what my final decision is at that point, but my desire to work in tech is definitely leading me in the direction of the West Coast...

Posted by: i880/8525junkie

true, it rly is more of a finance school now that I think about it...guess that's why It appeals to me so much...well...if u decide on Berkeley...we need to organize a send off that only new yorkers can pull off

So it's official... I'm now a California Golden Bear at Berkeley!

I'm proposing that I leave work as of July 3rd, though that still needs to be approved. Holy crap!

Posted by: Urban Strata

By the way, does anyone have any experience/tips for moving across the country?

(3,000 posts with this post!)

Yea, don't become a GS Warriors fan. your best bet is to be a Laker fan. oh, and people on the west coast are VERY different. if you're in LA, everyone is an "actor". if you're in the bay area, they're all a "ceo" of some great new startup.

choose your friends wisely =)

The West Coast is very weird. I noticed this last weekend when I was visiting Berkeley:

I'm standing at a cross stop. The light in front of me is green, but there are no cars coming. Yet the five people standing around me wait for a red light and "walk" sign. F' it, I walk!

Something as simple as walking through a green light is amazing to me. In New York, we cross the street anytime the traffic slows to 5 miles per hour or less. Evidently in Berkeley, you need to wait until you get a red light and the official "Walk" sign.

Whatever. I'm a Golden Bear for the next to years, but I'll be a New Yorker at heart forever.
