P905i Review

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: murdoc2k

I know the panasonic thread should deserve more attention since P905i is Panasonic and not Sharp after all, but I had to create the unlocking threads there before there's more activity on the Sharp forum than this. hopefully once everything settles the mods might move my Unlock thread over to this section.

Phone call/receiving call experience
Since I don't really have my unlocking sim yet, I can't really test calling features or SMS so this first review will be based on features that i can explore without using a sim. A new review will be posted once I get my hands on a working sim.

First Impression
When first got my P905i, I was surprised. I did fair amount of research on Google and watched many videos on Youtube and thought that this phone (although thinner than most other FOMAs) would be quite big. To my surprise, it is only about 1 cm longer than my w810i! My cousin back at HK around 2-3 years ago told me to get SE W810i becuase the W900 was too chunky and big. I measured the thickness of this phone and well don't expect it to be as thin as the Razor but it certainly is a bit thinner (according to specs sheet it says 1mm). Another thing I'd like to mention is how nice it looked when it came out. It looked so sick and I just couldn't stop drooling over it. Only sticking out about 1 cm, you get the screen size that doubles the W810i this thing is a monster!

Interface
I must say that since I've only used Nokia and SE interface, I'm not very used to how Docomo phones worked at first. I didn't understand their categorization (eg: what the heck is life-kit?) I find that they aren't very descriptive when it comes to their features. Phones that I've used were very straight forward (eg: if it was a game section it'd just say "games"). I understand that this can be quite frustrating for an elder person as if I handed this over to my mom, she prolly wouldn't know how to work it. I took about an hour or so just clicking away getting used to browsing the menus faster and playing around with different options and that's where everything started to take off. I had fun playing that Race car game and hopefully I can find more games to download later (it says it can load i-apps from microSD?).

I might make a guide for people who are new to P905i and so we can share our inputs and help others learn how to work this thing faster (especially most of us are early adapters of the Docomo phones

Flashing lights and the screen!
The flashing lights is amazing. I loved how they allowed you to tweak RGB settings to achieve the color you want. There are many settings you can customize such as regular illumination when the phone is just hanging around, when you're in a conversation and when you close the lid of your phone. The display is brilliant. As promised it was ultra thin (thanks to OLED technology) and I loved the contrast. I just couldn't get enough of it!

Design Plus features
I choose this phone is the fact that THEY HAVE A BUTTON TO FLIP OPEN THE PHONE. It's just a cool feature that I haven't seen on any other 905s that I think a phone should have. It has many shortcut keys which you can press and hold to activate their features, for example, by pressing and holding the pound key you will enter "manner mode" (silent mode equivalent for SE users out there). If you press and hold on the star key you will activate driver mode and the standard voice recognition feature by pressing and holding the talk key for a few seconds. The phone also flips open from the sides which allow you to use applications with ease which is pretty cool (although here in Canada, Samsung has released a similar phone for Bell).

GamePlay Experience
Regarding the gameplay on the P905i, I'm very pleased with the graphics it has and the processing power this phone provides at such a small form factor. It took under 30 seconds for me to load the racing game and the controls weren't too bad. I have still yet to find out how the motion sensor thing works, but the experience overall was quite impressive (it's like playing on the PSP).

Calculator
I've tried other functions such as the calculator and you have no idea how much this calculator software is compared to Sony W810i's calculator. There were many easy one button access to different operations so you didn't have to scroll back and forth the interface that's a plus for P905i.

Media
Since I currently don't have a MicroSD for the phone at the moment, I couldn't test out media settings and transfering files back and forth between my desktop computer and my phone. I will post updates tomorrow once i get my hands on a microSD.

The Camera!
Alright, I haven't been able to actually take pics and put them on the computer for comparison, but there was a post on the SH905i and P905i thread which had a link to another forum comparing the image quality. They claimed that the images on P905 weren't as good as N905 and that it was better due to their face recognition technology. One very ironic thing I find about this is the fact the user took pictures of objects and not people. I don't think having face recognition would help take better pictures of objects and so I decided to test under what circumstances would I get a blurry picture and why that happens. As a result, I find the following:

1) I find that people might get confused by the AF button on the keypad which is short for "Auto Focus". If you are not in "Auto Focus" mode for the camera, Auto Focus is NOT activated

2) Other than Auto Focus mode, there's also the Macro and Infinity mode. These 2 modes are made specifically for taking pictures of your subject at different ranges. (Macro: Short range. Infinity: Long range). Using the wrong modes may result in blurred images.

3) If you are not in "auto focus" mode, you must "focus" your camera by pressing the "AF" button. This simulates you holding down your capture button half way on a real digital camera allowing it to focus its lens before making the capture. Setting your camera to Auto Focus mode will do that for you automatically when you take the picture.

Knowing these 3 facts, I was able to take pictures that appeared fairly crisp and clear on my 3 inch screen. I'll see if I can get some pictures in for you guys later on. Oh I forgot, the Xeon flash light was fairly bright and so if you stand at a distance of around 10 feet it should be ok, I wouldn't count on anything further though if the surrounding is really dark.

A disappointment to this phone is the fact that it has bluetooth but it's made only for using another device as a modem (at least that's what I think right now) and for headsets. This great tool for transferring data is blocked off which got me really frustrated cause that's like not having bluetooth at all. Another frustration comes from now having a clear indication on how to send data via infrared . Even now, I still don't know how to send or receive data from an infrared transfer. I've tried it many times from my w810i to this phone but there hasn't been any response. If you guys know how to work that part, please post below and share!

Overall I rate this phone 9/10. There's definitely no way you will find a phone that looks this nice (other than the rest of the 905 line up) when comparing to the 905. The features it gives are just overwhelming to a point that We can't even use them yet For nearly 700 dollars I must say it is a heafty price but if you're a true keitai freak, this is hardcore! I'm not a fan of Panasonic phones to begin with since their phones aren't exceptionally outstanding in the past, but this phone really change my point of view of the company. Hopefully they'll keep up their good work and release some nice phones for 906 and the future.

How about the Loudspeaker volume?

The 2 speakers are located around the camera at the back of the phone which is a draw back since you would rarely look at the back of the phone. I'm still waiting for my headphone adapters to arrive. I'll tell you how it goes with earphones. I'm assuming right now you'll get decent quality playback.

hey how can u make ur sms longer
i have a limit of certain amount of words i can write b4 it stops :S

Posted by: murdoc2k

change the language to English and you will get up to 170 character input. Japanese input is 70 characters.

I think this one should be ok for the P905i...

Posted by: murdoc2k

yep.. the 903SH one works. Mine just arrived!!! I'll be writing more on the sound quality.. gimme a few minutes to try out everything.

http://cgi.ebay.ca/D056-Earphone-Ad...1QQcmdZViewItem

This is the cheapest one you can find

**EDIT**

Ok let me start off by saying that I come from a W810i SE with those nice earphones and SE's MEGABASS equalizer for the max boost in base so let's see how well this matches up to that.

For fairness sake I've used the same set of headphones so hopefully the quality will be very similar.

I have to say that this still isn't the most accurate test I could make because I don't have the USB cable yet so I'm forced to convert my mp3 into MP4 so I can listen to the sound quality. Maybe it could be better if I used its equalizer settings.

My Song of choice: Kibun JoJo - Mihimaru GT
This song is a popish party music with a mixture of rap so there's going to be some base and treble can test.

There are 6 levels of volume from mute -> loudest

I'm playing it at volume 1 right now and the base is clearly present. Treble is very nice. As I push the volume higher up there are no issues with my earphones not being able to take the increase in volume. It is a pretty good experience over all. Sound was pretty crisp and clear. For most people playing at volume 2-3 would be good enough and anything more would start to hurt the ears.

Perhaps I need to test the equalizers for the fairest assessment, but so far the base could be better. It seems like MegaBase does make a difference.

Sound volume transition (how well the player handles the sound as volume increases) : 10/10
Treble production: 8/10
Base production : 7/10
Overall Experience: 8/10

don't expect surround sound experience, but definitely acceptable under most cases. If you listen to music, I highly rekon you use a headphone over the regular speakers.

Posted by: joshyth

thank. how long did it take to ship before you receive the adapter?

Edit:
wow, the seller sure doesn't wait till you receive the item before leaving a feedback, i received a feedback like a minute after i completed the transaction.

Posted by: murdoc2k

around 1.5 weeks or so. It's pretty fast considering I used airmail. I won't complain. It appears that I've missed my SIMKJ delivery today lol.. I was sleeping -_-" My mom's gonna pick it up for me tomorrow so... I guess I can write a review on the reception of SIMKJ vs Next V6 on GSM network. Stay tuned.

Hey I'm a new member of this forum and I came across this phone, which I was incredibly interested in. I was wondering if you are going to review the GPS feature of the phone. Thanks a lot.

Oh where did you get the phone? $700 is pretty cheap compared to the $800 price tag easy cell.

Cheers.

Posted by: takumi906

GPS doesnt work on any 905i without docomo's service

Posted by: ShawnK

It's right now 450 - 500 on eBay and add 100 for the hypersim. There's more to risk though, like scams, no warranties, etc.

hypersims arent that expensive anymore

My answer would be
Have you tried reading my "P905i guide" thread?

random question....when the clamshell is closed, when someone calls or texts you, does the little light circle in the middle starts to flash?

yes you can set it to illuminate and you can also set the colour and pattern. In fact, you can even set it to light up when you talk.

Posted by: tongyunguy

I'm wondering if the P905 is able to flip the screen all the way around so you can view the screen flat

Posted by: ryanfok

dunno if you guys are having the same problem, but everytime i transfer a picture from the cpu to the phone and try to set it as DISPLAY PIC, is not full screen...anyone know why?

Posted by: MODist

ryanfok - the same problem,
Fixed with photoshop, but didnt worked out.

Posted by: deasine

Omg I saw the real phone at easycell in aberdeen centre the other day and it looks AMAZING. Wow it looks twenty times better in person than in pics. Too bad it's like $800 at the store or else I would've bought it on the spot =D

i love u so much for making this thread. i've been interested in buying the P905i in white for a while. just looking for a good buy on ebay. i've also recently started learning about all the sim hack mumbo jumbo and GSM network and what not @.@ lol. i live in winnipeg canada and am current using a 3040 Rogers sim card. do u think an INEX sim hack would be my best bet for a sim hack? i'm reallie limited to buying off the internet, and dont want to keep wasting money on a bunch of sim hacks. any suggestions or opinion is appreciated ^_^. and um, does the phone come with a usb cable to load music or wallpapers to the phone? or is that sold seperately? D:

thanks a bunch!

Accessories are sold separately. Batteries are included. Depending on your seller, he/she may or may not include a charger.

inex is the most stable sim hack you can find and that's the reason why its pricing has never dropped.

I'm still researching on this phone but I'm glad many cell phone stores are stocking it!! I have long been waiting for a nice camera flip phone in Canada!!

How are you guys managing the talk time??
It's listed as 2.5 hrs, which is very low!!

u have to consider how big the screen is? it's a huge screen compare to other phones.. so it'll tend to eat a bit more...

Posted by: murdoc2k

Well the good thing about this phone is it has light sensor (similar to Sony Ericson) so it will adjust its own brightness accordingly (that helps save battery). You can also forcefully set the brightness level and it uses OLED for backlight and not regular TFT/LCD. This means the screen is ultra thin and that it significantly uses less battery to power the screen. If you put regular LCD/TFT screens on this phone, it may not even last this long.

Did you have secret mode on when you were trying to delete it? It works for me.

hmm.. I'm not sure what's going on with your P905i... but here's my suggestion

menu -> settings -> 7 -> 4

check and make sure "Auto Power On" and "Auto Power Off" are both set to "off" and perhaps check your battery status.

Have tried.
Doesnt help...
It's ok in the moment...
Lets see

Alright so I've finally got my USB cord. It took me a while to explore how conversion works and I finally got it up and working.

The good news for those who use headphones is the fact that they have a pretty good equalizer. You can choose to allow the equalizer to remaster all settings. They have 2 extra base settings (sorta like Mega Base Level 1 and Mega Base Level 2). The level 2 would be equivalent to Sony's Mega Bass. It certainly is very enjoyable and I loved the quality that came out of it. They also have options to tweak it so that you can max the treble as well bringing the best of two worlds together. The music player allows playback volume to reach 21. Most of the time I find myself running on lvl 9 on my headphones. Indeed, if you can get Music Player working always use that instead of the i-mode movie player because it allows a lot more tweaking on the sound which makes it better For audibility without headphones, in my bedroom the average sound level is 13. It also has many play modes 1) Normal 2) Play only one 3) repeat one 4) Repeat All 5) Random 6) Random play + repeat.

I would say given the ability to customize my equalizer, I think this phone will give a better audio experience than my Sony Ericson W810i.

Thanks murdoc2k, for the p905i review. It's very useful and informative. =)
.. but... i'm still deciding whether to get this P905i... or the SO905iCS.. since they both have 5.1 megapixel cameras. (is the P905i better than the SO905iCS?? i know the SO905iCS is a bit bulky.. but it's a cybershot phone!)
And oh, I live in Vancouver... so I don't know whether I should purchase it from echigoya-honpo .
- Does the phone display ur friend's/caller's names from who are from ur address book whenever they call you? I heard from people on another forum that they an issue with it.
By the way, I use Fido as my service provider.
- How large is the internal memory?

thnx in advance

Well I've seen some pictures taken with SO905iCS and well it's pretty close to P905i. I personally prefer P905i (it's why I bought one ) due to form factor and it's beauty. The screen is also bigger than SO905iCs. The only reason I could think of why I want SO905iCs is probably because it plays MP3 and ok.. maybe the camera is a bit better.

- CallerID from local area can show up right but you need to tweak the settings in order for it to work. I will post a guide on P905i on how to do that.

- Internal memory for P905i and I think all 905 series is 100MB

Seems like Panasonic mobile products always have great sound. My Panasonic DSnap I picked up for under $200 5 years ago has better sound than the latest generation iPod.

Ive got a question about possible web browsing. I do a lot of web browsing in my phones and I just wondered if it had an html browser or a wap browser. Does the internet work outside of the FOMA network? Is it possible to download Opera Mini on it as the browser? Sorry for so many questions. I am debating wether or not to get one of these phones and the screen looks like it would be amazing for browsing. Has anyone gotten this to work?

If you've done even just a slight search on this forum, you will find that this topic has been discussed over "n" times. And no, I'm not kidding about it.

The answer for the n+1 th time. NO it does not work. NO one has gotten the internet to work yet. and NO one outside of Japan will be able to use any i-mode functions unless that specific country for some reason suddenly uses i-mode equipment. got it?

Posted by: kaporter

wow dude, sorry I hit a nerve. I didnt expect that to be such a big issue. My bad. Well then, Ill leave this post alone.

Everyone's a bit annoyed because the same questions are being asked over and over and its only getting worse so don't mind him he's just a bit annoyed, we all are to some extent.

Anyways back on topic.

I still can't transfer music via MTP - WMP on XP unless I'm on Vista lol which is so horrible xD

Ah well I think I'm sticking with videos lol.

hmmm better experience then a sony walkman phone? O_o I should test that too lol....but I still think the P905i isn't as loud when compared to others. (but then again that could be just me)

really? mine works fine. I use xp and i can transfer music to my phone using wmp11.

havent had any problems at all. ^_^

my copy of xp came with wmp11 already in case you were wondering.

about the loudness..i wouldnt say its the loudest phone....compared to those sony walkman ones...but its at a mediocre level i would say.

however, even with volume boosted up to max level..u can hear no cracks in the sound..unlike sony ones in which u can sometimes hear cracks even with high quality music. i guess they dun really have a limit on the internal speakers...but the p905i probaby has some limitation on the volume...meaning that it could be louder definitely if that "something" was removed..pushing the speakers to its limit.

hope i'm not sounding confusing Lolz

Posted by: murdoc2k

naw... I think it's loud enough when you pushed the volumes to max. I can't imagine anyone wanting the volume any louder than that. You can practically walk though an area under heavy construction and still hear your music loud and clear. There's no need to get any louder than that.

thanks for your review !! i think i'm going to get it.. in black ! haha =)

i have a few questions..
1) does this phone come with USB cable ? if it doesn't.. can you use other ones like the iPod ones to put music / pictures in ?
2) can you use m4a files as ringtones ?
3) can you use pictures as wallpaper ?

i read that site you gave above but it's sorta confusing XD

Posted by: MyLoveForTofu

1) no it doesn't. and no you can't use the Ipod cables. it uses its own type of port thing thats the same type as its charger and coincidentally it doesn't come with a charger either. (well unless the guy your importing from bought you one)

2. no

3. yes

Posted by: lys_77

WHAATT.. no charger? then how do you charge your phone?.. =S..
oh.. then do you buy a mircrosd card and .. put music/pics in from the comp and then stick it back into the phone? LOL

Almost all keitai's use the same charger so I just use my 903sh charger on it lol.
And no I don't use a microsd card to transfer music/pics I use my docomo data cable which I bought outside of the cellphone.

You could use the sd card to transfer pictures. You can also convert videos into MP4 files or ASF and put them into your phone via the SD card. (640 x 352 for best resolution and wide screen view) The other non-data cable ways of doing it are SD jukebox (never got it to work) and converting the music file into some 3gp file that was suggested in Hardwarezone forums which I also never got to work >_>

So, as far as I know the easiest way to transfer music is using a data cable and putting the phone into MTP mode and transfering it from WMP.

Posted by: murdoc2k

well to me I thought it was stupid that when they first sold docomo phones on ebay that they didn't include charger knowing that it was required. But then come to think of it, it was a smart idea cause now they get to charge you extra piece by piece. Some tend to bundle a charger with it now but docks are still not very common and are usually sold separately.

Paying such a hefty price for this phone, I'm most likely going to keep it for a while and I'm satisfied that there's only a small group of us that have this phone so I don't have to worry too much about people having the same phone as me.

Speaking of which.....while I was going to Kerng Gei's (lol sorry I don't remember their english name....kenny? not sure I forgot) the restaurant close to Midland & finch. The person sitting next to my table was holding onto a white P905i and we stared at each other for the longest time lol xD

LOL! yeah... Keurng gei is Kennys.

They probably won't sell that in local stores. You should check ebay or you can also use a middle man to help you purchase (also known as Yahoo Japan auction service).

Yeah in metrotown theres a small cellphone booths that gives you cellphone screen protector. I think its like 10 or 20 bucks for a custom one. It's a crazy unbelievable price =/

You can get away transferring videos via MicroSD but you can't get away with it on transferring music. The only working solution and the easiest for transferring music so far is the USB cable. It's been mentioned before that there are alternatives you can take. You can try them if you like but many have attempted and failed (myself included).

Can you transfer videos from using the USB cable? cause if you can.. then I think I'll just buy the USB cable. Which one is more convenient?
How much internal memory does the P905i have?

yes, however some people claim there's a limit to how much you can transfer (I can't remember on top of my head at the moment).

P905i has 100MB for internal memory.

you need to follow the file naming convetion. Please download the english manual and refer to page 306. If you don't follow the naming structure it will not show up on the phone.

If you want pre-cut protectors etc, I think there's a shop in Aberdeen Centre where they sell Japanese phones... they might sell accessories for the phone...
