Is backup necessary before I use iLiberty?

I'm planning to use iLiberty to unlock/jb my 16GB iPhone (restored to 1.1.4). Is it necessary to backup everything in the iPhone before I use iLiberty? Does the unlock/jb process remove everything on the phone?
