Sony Walkman Slider vs. LG Shine

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi! I'll be getting AT&T soon and I was wondering if anyone has any + or - about the Sony Walkman Slider or the LG Shine to help me decide. Or if your really partial to another phone, reasons why. Thank you!!!

W580i is prone to the keypad breaking. Other than that, it is an awesome little phone. Great battery life, great reception, camera is decent for a 2 megapixel. Has lots of modding abilities if you want.

LG is prone to fingerprints, all over the casing. It really bothers some people. Decent reception, depends on your location, decent battery life, not much in the modding area if you are looking to add themes and the likes.

My pick? W580i.

First off I would definitely choose the Z9 that was just released over those 2 phones because of it's superior features. That said I would take the sony over the shine.

Posted by: Heavy Fluid

Yeah, I forgot about the Z9. I have moved away from Motorola, so I always forget about including them. It looks to be a solid phone, excellent reception from what I have read on the web.

I've heard good things about the Z9, but is that brown/burgundy the only color it comes in? And yes I am into style, pretty much why I'm moving away from Nextel! lol! I am leaning towards the Sony, people seem to like it better and it comes in Pink!! lol!!

For the money the W580 can't be beat. Better music player, includes headphones and data cable to DL music or teather. that alone is worth 50.00. Teh shine is 3g so if you're going to use data it might be a better choice, if you text ALOT I would go with the shine. If you have to have a slider.

the SE is 50 cheaper PLUS comes with all the accessories. You should get a memory card no matter which you get if you're for music.

Z9 appears to be a good handset, but to me too big, too heavy, too ugly, too expensive. Don't have a z9, but I have found our moto's (razr 3x, razr, 635, l7) to be good performers, lots of accessories avail, and I personally prefer them/ We have both the sony 580 and the lg, and appear to adequate. Both are noticeably lighter, and the sony appears half the size of the z9 (not really) but the z9 is hugh. Tryng the z9 in store, appeared have probably the best earpiece sound, similiar to the other later model moto's, which to me is one of their best features.

I had the LG shine & it was a good phone except I kept selecting the wrong thing with the small toggle switch. Felt kind of heavy compared to the w580i

we have the w580i in white & really like it. It is a very light phone & good for texting. The camera is also pretty good.We have not had a problem with the keys cracking like a lot of people do, fingers crossed!

When i was in the store today a lady was returning her second W580 because of broken keys. She left with a Samsung slider and I left with the Z9 which I find MUCH better then the Shine.

Posted by: jenna8110

Thanks guys! It's looking like the Sony. It's small, light, good lookin and no I don't text...ever! And all is opposite to Nextel! I'm so over the two-way and big ugly phones! I will try my best not to send one of my nails right though the keyboard! I think I should get the insurance just in case! lol

I have a w580i, and I prefer my d807 over it. I just don't like the UI and how it feels like a toy. It's also very cheap. I tried removing the battery door and the front part that slides up now raises up on one side cuz the phone actually bent. I would go with the Shine. The screen is just as clear if not better, the camera is better, and the keypad is better. It also looks nicer IMO.

I really liked the w580 because it has a great UI (like SonyEricsson's do in general) but I found the build quality very disappointing especially after the w600 I had for quite some time.

Personally I find the battery life to be much better on the Shine and that coupled with the build quality is why I've kept it for three months versus the SE which I only kept about six weeks.

The good thing is that you get 30 days to try the phone out and you can exchange it if you don't like it. Must you have a slider? Because the SE z750 is coming out soon (if it hasn't already and I missed it), it will come in pink, and its European cousin the SE z610 was a solidly built phone. It's a flip, though, but far slimmer and sexier than anything you've likely used on Nextel.

Good luck with your phone purchase. Plus I think you'll be much happier with at&t versus Nextel at this point.

Couldn't have said it better. I haven't owned a shine, but I've used them, and like them far better. I think my reasons for disliking the w580i is because my expectations were so high because of the w810i.

The battery life for the w580i is pretty bad. Good thing I have my trusty iPhone that just whoops all of them

I really do want a slide for some reason. I've had candybars and flips and just want something different. I've been checking out the Z9 some more and have a question, does it have touch buttons on the front like the Chocolate? Because I've used my nieces Chocolate and I end calls with my cheek!

Thats a negative, the buttons on the front are actual buttons you have to press. I hate those static buttons too, I always hit them and mess everything up Im trying to do.

I would have to recommend the z9 or shine if you have to get one. Then again though that is based on asethics. I would have to concede that the SE probably has the most functionality of the 3.

The only thing I can think of the w580i having over the two is a slighty more intuitive UI (that I don't personally like. It's the font, it's too big.), and the built in FM radio. Other than that, the z9 and shine both take better pictures, have a flash, look nicer and feel nicer. Also, everyone and their mom is getting a w580i.

Love my w580i, but I'm on my third one (keys cracking). First one took about 7 months, then my last one took about one month...

Love Sony's phones, their UI and T9 are fantastic. (can't stand Moto's counter-intuitive iTap bull)...

I have to agree with you, Sony's T9 is excellent. But so far Im doing pretty good with the Z9's iTap. I dunno why you keep with that phone, Id been done with it after one. When I was in the store getting my Z9 a lady was exchanging her W580i for a Samsung because of the broken keys. I think Sony's quality is terrible on their less expensive phones. IMO.

Yea, I am just holding onto this phone until the 3G iPhone comes out. My last Sony phone, the W810i, was a bomb-proof, battery from hell, great little phone.... This one is similar, except for the keys... otherwise it's a tough little slider with good battery life. It even works after the key cracks...

I loved moto's call quality on the V3xx, but couldn't stand how iTap worked. If you wrote 'A8' (as in Audi) instead of 'at' one time, it would forever let A8 be your first option when typing. And if you misspell a word, oh lord, it's your first option every time... lol Also, it tends to never predictably give word suggestions, forcing you to stare at the screen as you type or have many errors when done.... Can't take it, lol.

Posted by: jenna8110

Ok so I was at the AT&T store and checked out the phones. The Shine did seem to be better quality than the Sony but also a lot bigger! The Z9 was good quality also but even bigger then the Shine and only comes in Burgundy (yuck!). The Sony wasn't quite the pink that is in the pictures, more salmon! And I really like the color of the pink V3xx but EVERYONE has a Razor! Ok now I guess I'm leaning more towards the Shine! WTF!

You are joking, right? Have you used T9?

Posted by: dcdttu

I've used both, and the only way iTap is better is if the person never fully learns how to type intuitively. It forces you to practically stare at the phone because the words always come up in different order (based on last-used or something). Not good at all...

Additionally, it likes to add in characters after a while ($ . ( ) * ' : ; for example, into actual words, creating a botched word every time that you have to go and correct because you put a word in parentheses once and it forever thinks that's what you want to do. Bad design, leave punctuation out of it, like T9. And don't get me started on mis-spelled words, words with uppercase first letters and so on...

Additionally, Motos have their notorious flat keypads that are as pretty as they are useless in real world use. I think the V9 addressed this? If so, bravo.

Additionally, I can out-type the iTap on every phone I've tried, being done typing when the screen is still slowly typing out the sentence and is about 1/2 way done... then I get to see all of my errors pop up on the screen: the A8 instead of at, the ) at the end of a word solely because I did it once before, the random changing of order of suggestion of words like me/of, good/home....

T9 wins) games! Down!

Sorry, typed that on a Moto....

Damn you. I had actually managed to block that out but now all those painful memories have re-surfaced. I'll be PMing you the bill for my therapist.

But, seriously, I had forgotten about that. I haven't used a Moto phone in more than a year (a RIZR that I had for a couple months) and had blocked it out of my memory.

Well then, off I go to recover ... *pets iPhone*

I didn't like T9 the few times I tried it. It's been awhile but I can remember that I liked the iTap ability to learn unique words over T9 having to stick to its defined dictionary.

I know that on T9 (or at least some models) one can add whatever word to the dictionary but with iTap it would learn and remember the words without ever having to do anything.

Either way I'm not a big fan of predictive text anyway but if I had to choose I'd have to choose iTap over T9.

Posted by: Heavy Fluid

The Sony Ericsson W580i will let you add words into the dictionary, if the original poster is considering this. Also, it comes in more colors than pink, which in person, is not that bad. My wife has it, now as a backup phone, but she really likes the pink.

Once you learn T9, everything other than QWERTY is pretty much a joke.

Posted by: MCKINNIE

Sometimes I actually prefer t9 to a QWERTY. I can type just as fast.
