Having trouble playing videos on my pc

I took a couple short clips with my tilt. When I transfered the video to my computer I cannot play it without Real Player and Quicktime. Or so it says. My Tilt uses Windows Meda Player why can my PC not use Windows Media Player? By the way the file is an .MP4 file.

Thanks

It's likely a codec issue. What I would do is download GSpot and determine what flavor your files require. Then, make sure your PC has what you need, otherwise, download the required codec/media player updates. You might try VLC as an alternative as well.

If you have Quicktime player on your PC, rename the file from .mp4 to .3gp!

I will try that. I still think it's a little wierd that they don't just play on Windows media player on my PC considering that it is Windows Mobile Media player. You would think they would be compatible.

True, renaming the file might just work (good suggestion). But based on your comments below, you are missing the boat. It's often not enough that the same OS/Media Player was used.

Two things are at work, containers and codecs. It's possible to view one type of container (computer file format, such as AVI or 3GP) on your phone, but have it be non-viewable on your PC if you don't have the correct codec installed. Wikipedia has some basics on both that are palatable for the masses IMO-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codecs

Web sites such as doom9.org and afterdark have helped me grasp a lot of these concepts-

have fun,

Thanks, I will check those out. I'm a bit of a computer geek anyway.
