Nokia 6555 Questions

Hello I have recently purchased a Nokia 6555 which is locked to Fido. I am not too upset about it being locked to Fido but I am extremely upset that they have crippled the mp3 ringtone capabilities to force us to purchase ringtones from them at ridiculously outrageous prices.

1st I would like to know if getting this phone unlocked will also unlock this mp3 ringtone crippling?

2nd I have read that this phone cannot be unlocked via code because it is "BB5". I have also that there is a fairly expensive solution in the JAF-Flasher option. I have read on other sites that it is also possible using software running on a PC (Diego?) and an appropriate USB cable. Is this possible?

I have managed to find a copy of Diego V3.08 and I have a USB cable on the way. (I also currently connect the phone to my computer via bluetooth for transferring files etc...)

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Carl.

I've managed to create my own ringtones by copying music into apple's garage band and saving the clip as an mp3 (or maybe importing into itunes and changing it to mp3) then I've transfered it via bluetooth to my phone.

Fido users can do that too ... Unfortunately it's only to listen to the file itself ... It's locked for using said file as a ringtone.

Bump, I'd like to know about unlocking this phone from Fido also. Anyone?

Try making the file smaller. I found that my 6555 wouldn't allow a ringtone larger than a certain size. Either shorten it or re-encode at a slower bit rate

It't not a matter of making it smaller. FIDO has locked the phone so that you \ We can only use ringtones purchased through their WAP internet service. Thus forcing us to either purchase the ringtones from them or purchasing through a third party but paying them unreasonable download rates / kb. They only way to do it if you want to purchase through a third party is to purchase FIDO's unlimited surfing package. Otherwise you would be paying over $20 / ringtone just to download it. (If you purchase the ringtones from FIDO at an unreasonable price of about $4 - $7 per ringtone the download is supposedly included).

Either way it is an abuse of what the DRM system was designed for.

Of Course the other problem with either of these choices is the limited selection. I have about 1400 CD's that I have paid for and have a right to use my own music for ringtones. But I can't because I did not purchase them from Fido. Besides I can purchase a whole song for $0.99 Cents from just about any online music store. Why should I pay FIDO $4 - $7 for a 30 second clip of a song?

This is nothing more than a money grabbing scheme in the guise of protecting artists rights. I doubt any of the money ever makes it into any artists pockets. I wish I had the money to pay a lawyer. I bet there would be a good case for fraud against FIDO in this.
