HTC Touch "Scrolling Screen of Death"

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: donkeyman

This is starting to happen to my Touch and I've seen one other post on the internet about it, but nothing more.

Symptoms
- Use the phone for 5 mins.
- Screen starts to scroll like an old analog TV (ha ha catch the start menu if you can ).
- Then the screen slowly blacks out.
- Soft reset & hard reset cannot bring the phone out of blackout.
- Wait 2 hours and the phone is good to go again.

Resolution?
- Replace the phone. Spent the whole weekend trying to fix it anyway I can (software-wise) and gave up.
- Phone is only 35 days old.
- New problem, but the Bell Store rep trusted my word and replaced my phone.

Conclusion
If this problem shows up on your phone and you are days away from end of warranty, REPLACE it. Don't think this is software but more of a hardware issue.

Oh yeah forgot to add that my white HTC touch housing is cracked on all four sides in the shape of a cross. Dropped once, but the cracks are nowhere near where the drop was. I expected the Touch to last me 1 year before I got a new phone, but 35 days is just too short.

wow, that is messed.. my sympathies to you... i've had my own share of crashes and freezes but this is something else.

ok well i gotta bring 'err in for an exchange too because of the cracked housing.

How long have you had your white HTC? Do you use the touch cube much? I wonder if the frequent swiping motion is causing the housing to crack.

Wirelessly posted (htc touch: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; PPC; 240x320) Opera 8.65 [en])

Wow.... I work for Bell's Technical Solutions dept. and this is the first time I've heard of this happening.

damn homie...
i think your phone needs an exorcist!

you know what i noticed for my touch, whenever i go underground or whenever i go somewhere without reception, after i come up and get some reception my phone becomes very very slow. if i'm lucky, after a soft reset it will be fine, but sometimes i'll need a hard reset because it will be frozen on the start up windows mobile screen. i don't know why this, it might have something to do with windows live not being able to connect. i've had some crazy things happen to mine, like the touch screen part not working but everything else is fine, or even that stupid multi coloured wheel not going away, but never that scrolling thing!

Yeah, before I give the phone back to Bell, I am going to make sure to capture a video of it scrolling like a TV. If I need to put up a fight with either Bell or HTC, at least I have a video to prove my case and get a replacement phone in the future.

I upgraded my rom to the 'kaiser' version and updated my radio and i've yet to have any problems whatsoever. The only real issue i find with my touch is that somtimes, it rings for a while on the other end untill it actually rings my phone. But mostly i think that has to do with my cell service in the area i live. Hopefully bell has an update for everyone to fix alot of the issues we were having.

i have the same issues, and i've concluded that it's the phone. i use to have a treo (beautiful phone...i miss it so much) and i never had that problem. even with all of my older samsung and sanyo flip phones i never had a problem with reception or number of rings. it was when i got this one i noticed a difference, it's not that bad and nothing to return the phone over, but it is a problem.

A person calling you will receive "fake" rings even though the call hasn't been connected to you. Once connected the rings will continue as real ones.

This is not a problem with your phone.

There was a tweak around here (or xda) somewhere for the incoming ring delay. It had something to do with CDMA having the delay and GSM not, as they page the towers at different intervals, or something of the sort. The fix was rather simple, changing a setting on the phone from 3 to 1 or 0, or something like that. For the life of me, I can't remember what to search for to track this down, but hopefully this will jog someone else's memory and they'll add the proper search terms or link to the appropriate thread/post. It may be a good idea to raise the question in the Touch Question & Answer thread. In any event, I used to have the same issue, but it's been fantastic since that fix.

My touch screen just went bye-bye - it displays not a scrolling screen, but believe or not, a split vertical screen, one side black one white; no display is visible, but I know the phone still works as I got phone calls and it syncs with my computer. Soft and hard resets do not solve the problem; Did not drop it, immerse it or other abuse . I'm starting to wonder about the build quality of these phones ....
Oh well, warranty service here I come.
