Sony k800i-> k810i conversion OEM vs CNN.CN parts review

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Well I finally finished re-doing my k800i ->> k810i using a mix of OEM and CNN.CN parts

its a long read but i hope its useful

First lets start of with the basics

The OEM k810i case I purchased USED ( had scratches) here on the boards from a member. The quality of the materials were very nice and there was additional "glue" around a few parts that were put there to keep out dust (the lcd and buttons lenses are glued into the blue metal ring)

The CNN.CN parts i purchased from cnn.cn. They didn't send me the middle plastic part the first time around so i ended up using my old k800i one. Even when i received the correct parts there were small scratches already on the parts so it was a bit annoying
External Parts

LCD Lens
The part looks exactly like the OEM part, but is a little bit less scratch resistant. also there is no glue around it to keep out dust

Button lens

The part is 100% exactly like the OEM part, no complaints here

Bottom Keypad Buttons

I feel that these are Better than the OEM buttons, they are a bit shinnier and scratch less easily.

Center buttons + Joystick

I actually prefer the look of the CNN.CN buttons because they are a much darker blue than the OEM ones, but the problem is that its very difficult to get the part to "snap into place", if done incorrectly the buttons feel "mushy". The OEM part snaps into place very easily and holds on very tight.

Front Blue Aluminum surround

Looks almost like the OEM one, but it is a bit flimsier and is easier to crack the latches. The OEM has a different latch design ( a little thicker) and it seems to hold on to the center silver part a lot easier. Also for some weird reason the CNN.CN metal surrond seems to bulge a little at the middle.

Front Silver Buttons x2
Pretty much look feel and work 100% like the OEM buttons

Middle Silver Plate

Looks exactly like the OEM part, but is slightly flimsier for some reason. I looked closely at the design and they look exactly identical so I don't understand why it would be flimsier

Side buttons
They all look exactly like OEM but they do not stay in place as nicely as the OEM ones from the inside. From the outside though they look and feel the same.

Rear blue panel and battery door

Looks exactly like the OEM part but it is nowhere as nice to hold. THe OEM part has a much nicer rubbery feel to it, and also has a little more sparkle in the rubber paint. The fit is almost as good as oem, but has a bit of a gap issue on the side. I would rate the part a 90-95% though. One thing to note though is that I have no idea where the cell phone metal strap thing is suppose to attach ????

Now for the Internals I didn't have another k810i to compare so I am comparing the quality to the original K800i parts vs the CNN.CN parts

K810i LCD plastic holder vs K800i LCD plastic holder

The k810i LCD holder is a little bit thinner and has a few other changes. In terms of quality the edges are a bit rounder and softer than the K800i part.

K810i center plastic vs k800i center plastic

I have to say that this is a required part for those trying to do the swap. The k800i part is not only fatter, but requires an extensive amount of trimming and filing in order to fit inside a k810i case. Save yourself the time and just buy the part. My center plastic part came with the bluetooth antenna already inside so the rest of the swap went by quickly.

Overall i would say this

If you can get a hold of a BRAND NEW OEM k810i case then get it, otherwise don't bother buying a used one, because the CNN.CN parts looks and feel just as good as the original parts, but obviously are not used. Do not try to butcher your K800i middle plate just so you can save a few bucks, its not worth the trouble, buy the K810i middle plate.

You will definitely require the lcd plastic, new keyboard board, and middle plastic part to do this conversion perfectly.

Thanks for the review was always looking for a good comparision

cnn.cn is iffy, sometimes they have good stuff, their W810i was really good, their K790a was crap
