Wire VoIP into your house's existing telephone system?

I have a local telephone provider coming in from one side of the house that has been deactivated, however it still has a signal on the lines in case of an emergency to call 911. I have VoIP coming in on the opposite side of the house where my internet connection is.

I plugged the VoIP connection in one of my house's phone jacks and VoIP calls now work on all phones in the house, however none of them will ring for an incoming call, but I can still answer them.

How can I fix the ringing problem? Is it my local telephone provider's signal that's causing the problem? I'm not too sure where to unplug it.

I don't have an answer to your question. But I hope you won't mind if I ask you one. You have "a local telephone provider coming in from one side of the house that has been deactivated, however it still has a signal on the lines in case of an emergency to call 911." What kind of arrangement with the phone company allows for this and do you have to pay for this? Thanks for the info and I hope you get an answer to your own question, too. Global2

Global2: I'm pretty sure the law requires the telco to provide 911 service on all deactivated lines for free.

fooledme: What you'll want to do is cut the wires from the deactivated line to the rest of the house, so that you don't have both the telco signal and the VoIP signal on the same wires. I think the telco can sue you if you don't. Also, for the phones to ring, make sure the REN sum of your devices does not exceed the rating on your ATA.

I install VoIP, (so i have some experience in this matter) all you should have to do is unplug your local telco company's input feed. There should be a grey box on the side where it comes in, you'll need a screw driver. Open the box and you'll see a phone jack inside, just unplug it and your done. If you cut the wire's the phone company may charge you if you ever go back.
