Signs of an upcoming 3G launch?

With most 3G phones capable of reading either a G for GPRS, E for EDGE, and we all know, 3G for the lucky folks so far, are there any signs for someone with a 3G capable phone to know when 3G is upcoming? What I mean is, when your phone keeps reading G for a couple days at a time when it's normally on E for EDGE data, and getting the data indicator keep fluctuating from E to G and vise versa, and also having trouble connecting to media net on my phone. I have a SYNC, and it seems like these things are occuring more often in the last few weeks. My area is supposed to get 3G sometime by the end of the year, but who knows, those things I experience on my phone could be signs of an upcoming 3G launch, any word on that?
Thanks in advance.

Could be a number of things...if its switching back and forth is it when you are inside vs. outside? Even in a strong 3G area if you go inside some structures it will revert back to EDGE. If it goes from a strong EDGE signal to a really weak 3G then back to full EDGE, its likely that its grabbing on to a distant tower that has been upgraded but is not normally one your phone holds onto during calls or data transfer, only when its idle. Sounds like you have a few 3G sites around you but the rest are being upgraded currently and if its like my area that went totally live yesterday, they'll all be turned on at once and the 3G coverage will be pretty much seamless.

I'm not in a 3G area at all as of now, and the switching back and forth from EDGE to GPRS is happening both inside and outdoors the same. I'm also pulling signal off one tower which is about two miles away. I get connecting failed errors also. I'm thinking this is all a good sign that they are working on upgrading my area and it could go live any day now, so hopefully here real soon I get 3G.

When 3G is being deployed in a city, and they get to the point where they can actually turn it on, will they be left on (but not accessible to the public)? Or will they turn it on for a bit, mess with it, then turn it off?

I believe that they open them up for specific sim sets, test sets.

They turn it on early mornings 12 to 2am to test it and it's open to everybody

Its locked to Engineering sims most of the time, but at night they do drive tests so some clusters will be unlocked (most drive testers do not have the engineering sims)

I was working graveyard a few weeks ago, and was showing a 'G' on my Q9, which I know is for GPRS, but data was flying. I ran speed checks a few times and was showing around 500kbps, and there have been a few other times while working graveyard that week that the same thing has happened but was showing speeds of around 400kbps. We are supposed to be getting 3G in the next month or so according to local stores, is it possible that they had it on during those times? Seems to be between 2-4am everytime.

nah, thats just usage. Thats the same reason that the maintainance window is 11pm-4am. You aren't competing for resources.

yea but you don't pull 500kbps on EDGE though

Wirelessly posted (SAMSUNG-SGH-A707/1.0 SHP/VPP/R5 NetFront/3.3 SMM-MMS/1.2.0 profile/MIDP-2.0 configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Link/6.3.1.17.0)
True. There are a lot of markets that are likely to finally get 3G sometime in June, in time for the 3G capable iphone. So if you are in a secondary market, its a good idea to keep an eye on your signal for that long awaited 3G icon. Rumor has it at&t has been really busy the first half of the year so far, we shall see.
