Any news on sharp sx862? (sharp 920 questions)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: taromilktea

I think I may be abit behind times here, but I just wanted to know if anyone knew much about the sx862? Apparently it'll be available in Hong Kong and Taiwan in May. Does anyone know if all the features will be unlocked??
I'm holding off getting sharp 920 because i can't use the camera.

Also, with the sharp 920, does it have t9 dictionary input?
Which hyper sim/inex sim do i use to unlock it (im going to be using it on the 3G network in Australia)?
I WANT IT SO BAD!!!

Posted by: yangj08

SX862 is Hong Kong only and it will be out sometime within the next couple of months (thought it would be this month, but apparently not). Yes, everything will be unlocked and you will not need to fool around with sim-hacks anymore; just stick in your card and go.

Posted by: AL9999

Yeah... I'm still guessing it'll be announced next month, and Sharp usually announces world phones the moment they're released.

920SH does not have T9 input, but the other world versions will have it.

Posted by: beilei

more on this
I'm using Fido, no sim-hack need to be use? please give me news!!
All these problems I have encounter researching Japanese Phones (Docomo 905i)
1) No T9 for Eng
2) BT cannot transfer files
3) Cannot set ringtone
4) Call waiting

will I encounter any of the above problem with Sharp SX862

Posted by: IonNuke

I'm not sure with the SX862 but with the Taiwanese version the WX-T92, you can send stuff with BT and you can set ringtones as MP3s. I don't know about the T9 for English since the people that I know with the phone don't send SMS in english anyways.

Can't confirm call waiting either. That just never popped up in my head mid conversation with them

Apparently FarEasTone is selling them like hotcakes.... I should get in line for those~~~

Thanks for letting me know..peace of mind!

2G Network GSM 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 2100

will this work in Canada, Vancouver do you know??

Thanks Bro

Posted by: beilei

nevermind...I found out it does work..Canada uses 850 Mhz and 1900 Mhz.

Posted by: totaltoanage

gonna wait til the prices go down for these beauties.

Posted by: IonNuke

I can't justify extending my contract with FET anymore.... but if that drops the price of the phone down to 16500NT (about 450~500USD)...... I still can't get it.

When a phone costs more than a month's rent... thats usually a problem

Posted by: AL9999

It has English T9, yes. It'll have call waiting as well (all Sharps have had it).
It'll work in Canada on GSM 1900 only, although you'll at least get EDGE data with it.

This goes for both the SX862 and WX-T92. They are 90% identical, just a few minor differences (no QR code scanner for SX862, software visual design differences).

I think for me as their so similar it will be down to which one has the cheapest unlocked price.

Just found this on e bay. Bit odd as it doesn't seem to include a charger & why no guarantee it will work in your country if it's unlocked, or do they mean the operating frequencies?

Posted by: beilei

I called SmarTone and they said it will work in Canada, Vancouver. Functions such as the TV and anything like these that are only meant to work specificlly in Hk won't work here. All other basic everyday functions will work. It will be unlocked directly from Smartone once you bought it. No need ebay sim hack, hyper sim hack , or inex sim hack !!

do you know if the BT can transfer files?

Thanks for the info

So only the WX-T92 has a QR-scanner?

What so you could order it from the UK & they would send it here?

Is that from their main website?

Posted by: IonNuke

Carriers in Taiwan/HongKong rarely and in fact never lock their handsets. The only type of branding you'll get it logos on the outside of phones and probably some of their homepage bookmarks in the phone. In my past experience buying random phones from carriers in Taiwan and Hong Kong, i've never dealt with one that was locked.

I've always just walked into the store and when I left I had a new toy in my hand

Posted by: Super Chimp

I was debating e mailing Smart Tone, about stuff like it working in the UK & if they would send one to the UK just to see what they said on the issue?

Posted by: AL9999

Yes, Bluetooth can be used to transfer files, using either the OBEX profiles or file transfer profile.

Yes, only the WX-T92 got the QR code scanner (and related scanners like the one line text one) for some reason. It's not present in the SX862.

I'm not sure if they provide this service of sending it to you. It might be good if you ask that in your email or you can call their 24 hours hotline! They provide chinese and english assistance

http://www.smartone-vodafone.com/js...glish/index.jsp

keep us updated, I want to know if they will send it to our country! If not, I have to ask my friend a favour to bring it to me since she is going back to HK

awesome, I'm very positive in getting this phone now. It's just the matter of HOW I'll get it since it's only selling it in HK

Posted by: IonNuke

Yeah there's a few things in Taiwan that offer the QR code but I don't see any of my friends using it in Taiwan. **shrugs** I guess it helps to use it in Japan

Posted by: AL9999

Meh... I get annoyed when they just block features off for seemingly no reason (maybe because they think without content to use it with it will confuse people?). Who knows...

That's the link I found. I am also debating if I should mention I am a Vodafone UK customer, is it all Vodafone or is it a section operated by another company on their behalf in HK?

Posted by: AL9999

Smartone simply signed a partnership agreement with Vodafone Group. They're still an independent company, just one that makes use of the Vodafone brand now.

I think they'll help you even if you say you're a Vodafone UK customer, owing to the fact they sell the SX862 unlocked. They'll make money from any sale they get.

It would be good if they would send it to the UK?

It maybe more secure to do this, but I fear it may cost more going this route.

Posted by: beilei

called them again
They do not provide this service of sending it to your country
Also
Something I read on HK forum
You can't set your custom mp3 ringtone directly. You have to purchase it from their website.
Also I read that some of their phone will drop to half of the original price in a month of two, I think I'm going to wait it out and see.

Something to consider.

Posted by: AL9999

Oh I wouldn't have expected them to mail it outside the country, but if you turned up in one of their stores or got someone else to buy it for you, they'd have gladly sold it to you without a contract or new account or anything. That's what I meant.

No custom MP3 ringtones? Really... well the older SmarTone Sharp phones had that problem too if I remember correctly, I guess SmarTone hasn't changed policy on this one.

Posted by: IonNuke

My SmarTone SX633A just didn't even support MP3 ringtones.... then the SX833 also had the same problem..... I guess they didn't change it. **shrugs** Only really 1 way to find out. Find someone with it and see if it works.

oh god I WISH!!! hehe

Posted by: taromilktea

so, if i get someone to purchase the sx862 in Hong Kong, are there fees to unlock the phone? or already unlocked? All feature will work in Australia with 3G yeh? Just like 903sh? Still waiting on a phone that is gonna be better than 903sh....

what's the camera like on sx862 compared to 903sh??
Hope to hear some feedback from users.

I think the only way that's going to happen is if something happens that opens up more competition- say, they finally get the 920SH working on the same level as the SX862/WX-T92. But that could work the other way- it could put 920SH prices up where the SX862/WX-T92 are now.

Posted by: bakakutani

Smartone Vodafone handsets are locked only if you sign up with them and use their special price. The phone is now going for HK$5680 and I will need to sign an 18-month contract when buying the phone. I will get HK$1500 back in rebates over that 18-month period (hence that special HK$4180 deal for Smartone customers).

If you get someone to just come here and shell out HK$5680 for it with no contract, the phone should be unlocked.

That's what I got that I would have to come to one of their shops, not something I can do from the UK at this time!!!

So it's back to relying on e bay or Plemix to get this phone.

Posted by: Darthchilli

beilei shoudl check out Simple Wireless Solutions at Parker Place
ask for nelson lam and he will help u out
with any phone!

Posted by: Besieged

In regards to the custom MP3 ringtones, the salespeople in HK said that it did not support, nor did MP3 ringtones work when i uploaded them onto the SX862. Had to change them to MMF format under 300 kb for them to work. Sound quality isn't too bad, but it's a slight hassel.

Posted by: taromilktea

Is navy or silver nicer?
Do they both have a glossy finish? - i saw in some pics the navy looks like matte finish.
I want this phone so much, but I might wait a month or two.

Posted by: MyLoveForTofu

To be honest I'm not that thrilled about the selection of colour for this phone =/
both colours aren't that appealing to me lol regardless of the finish >_<

Posted by: Super Chimp

How long is it going to take for the price of the SX862 to come down on places like e bay? At the moment at over £400 even before postage & customs it's rather too pricey for me.

Posted by: IonNuke

Probably a while because HK and TW just recently released their versions of the 920SH phone so don't expect the price to be falling anytime soon.

Posted by: MyLoveForTofu

Unless another series of phones releases it probably wont drop in price like how docomo phones deflated the prices of 903 and 904sh's >_>

It'll probably be another good 3 or more months before that happens o.o

actually, it might maybe longer than that. just dont expect it to be anytime soon.

That's not the news I wanted to hear, I was hoping it was only going to take a couple of months.

Posted by: IonNuke

If it was a domestic brand like Motorola then it will take a few months to drop price. But something like Sharp is considered a better brand and that everywhere in Asia, they like to recycle Japanese culture so if people are already buying it @ these high prices, they will probably continue to do so.

You could always settle for the Chinese pirated 920SH called the COOL920. It actually looks really bad. But funny..... probably would explode in my hand too.

Posted by: aw614

lol that cool920 is more like an sh905itv and wont work in north america execpt for the tv for a few months before they kill analog

Posted by: crg_zinger1

hahahaha gfoood one

Posted by: Sturmtruppen22

SX633a is still expensive, i give the SX862 1-2 years before ill buy it.

Posted by: IonNuke

SX633A is still expensive???

Isn't it considered a rare phone??

(magically I ended up with one of them )

Posted by: aw614

well the t81 is. i think at brand new they still are over 300usd on ebay from tw

Posted by: IonNuke

but if I walk into FET and buy a T81 it's only gonna cost like about 170~200 USD.

Posted by: aw614

i guess the ebay sellers are overpricing it, but rather have the 705 or sx633a b/c of the mirror finish

Posted by: AL9999

SX633a is a bit rarer than the sister phones because it's got the wider screen of the 705SH; the 770SH and WX-T81 never got that upgrade...

The problem is with postage & custom charges into the UK I can see this phone costing £500 all told.

Posted by: aw614

customs and USA...its so easy to slide things here never been taxed

Posted by: skan928

I have a SX862 for sale if anyone is interested. Its already unlocked and i have only had it for 2 weeks so still boxed and very new.
Contact me if interested

Posted by: 4agze

Do you get tax to buy a phone from oversea? never happen to me before, hmm...

Posted by: Super Chimp

In the EU any item above £18 in value get's hit with import taxes. Though they are supposed to be raising this to £118 at the end of the year.

Posted by: 4agze

I see, but cant you request the item to be sent as a gift, so it wont be taxed...

You also have to write the value of the item. If you write it lower and they tax you, you will get taxed less. But if the item gets lost, you will only get the amount of money back that you wrote down.
