thinking of a BB for a 2nd phone

Hello all,

For various reasons I am thinking of getting a 2nd phone and looking at the Blackberry's. For work I need one that is smaller and a little less expensive then my Tilt. I've thought about either adding a 3rd phone to my family plan and buying a new one through ATT but if I do that I'd in addition to the extra line (10.00) I'd also have to purchase a data plan.

So I got to thinking about buying a used BB (eBay, Craigslist, etc) and simply taking the Sim from my Tilt and putting it in the BB when I am working.

So my questions are, if I do that, should the BB detect I have a data plan, and will I have access to BB email? I am assuming that in order for BB email to work that I'll have some kind of extra fee, so if that's the case, any idea what that will be?

Next, how does the BB browser compare to Opera Mini? Anyone here ever compare the two?

Thanks

A Blackberry will only do its intrinsic functions with a Blackberry data plan. The phone does not detect any data plan. The data plan is detected by the carrier when you connect. If there is no Blackberry data plan, you will not be able to connect to the RIM servers.

When I place a sim with the PDA plan in a Blackberry device, will it be able to access the internet through the built in browser? Or, will it be able to access the internet through OperaMini? If yes to either one, how will the data be charged?

How about the opposite if I place a sim with a Blackbeery plan in a Windows Mobile Device, will it be able to access the inernet through the window mobile explorer? Or, will it be able to access the internet through OperaMini? Also, how will the data be charged?

Thanks.

Wasn't this question answered in another thread in which you participated?

Before you buy a used BB from eBay or anywhere else, you really shoudl read the following: http://blackberryfaq.com/index.php/...kBerry_off_eBay.

Buying a used BB is much more complicated than buying an ordinary cell phone or PPC. Plus if it has been reported as lost or stolen, you could be out of cash and left with a brick.

Yep, I posted my question here first before I posted a similar question in that thread. By the way, I asked you another question in the thread with the $20 unlimited data plan on pay as you go account :http://www.howardforums.com/showpos...12&postcount=11 What do you think?

Thanks for the tip I will get one from ATT directly.

The BB data plan is basically a superset of the other data plans. The only difference is that a BB data plan grants access to the BB APN which is required for BB push email, browsing etc.

You might be able to get a BB working on some other data plan using Opera Mini and 3rd party apps but you won't get email nor the BB browser working. It's very hit-and-miss if you look through the existing threads.

You can't download with OM or set it as the default browser.

Thanks. I guess I will just try one out.

You should change the data plan you have now with your tilt, to a blackberry data plan when you order one. That way you will have full use of the blackberry & it's features & you will still be able to access the data features on your tilt when you swap the sim between the two.

Thanks. I will get the Blackberry Personal Plan when I get a Blackberry Device (I probably have to anyway). The general conclusion from this and other threads is just as you described, it is better to have a Blackberry Data Plan on a sim and that sim will allow full Blackberry features when it is in a Blackberry device and the sim will still allow the data features when it is in a PDA device (probably even in a regular phone too).

Correct, that would probably be the best way to go. That way you will have a fully functioning blackberry.
The OP (dchaney297) should also consider doing it this way IMO!

I agree. If you only want to be able to answer or receive calls with the BB then it would work nicely as a 2nd phone. He'll soon learn that he cannot use any data (email or web) with the BB without having a BB plan.
