Just got my GU87 few questions

First of all, I have the phone through AT&T Wireless, and it came with F/W version FB2AGAD87A38-38LPM-00052 No CustomPack
I know the latest is 51, what are the benifits of 51 over 38? Is there an easy way to do it in the states, or just with a cable?
The sound when making a call, through the earpiece, is kind of quiet, is there any way to fix this, or is it just the way the phone is?
Does anyone have any good ringtone/wallpaper sites?
I have infared on my laptop, is there any site that tells how to do infared between the 87 and the phone?
Is there any way to make it so that it doesn't default to going to the text message icon when you go into the menu? 
Oh and I seem to get better reception with my 7210. Is this normal? have others experienced this?
