Hello Everyone!

I have seen some speculation about this phone, and received this from my Sony Ericsson PR Rep in Toronto.

The phone is official is has been unveiled today! Here's the press release.

Press Release

Sony Ericsson unveils the Z780 – a stylish clamshell phone with truly global appeal that keeps you connected any way you choose

The new Z780 is the latest phone from Sony Ericsson to put the power of the web in the palm of your hand. Designed with a style-conscious audience in mind, the Z780 is a feature-packed phone that broadens the company’s range of devices for markets outside of Europe.

London, UK – 23 April 2008 – Sony Ericsson today announces the new Z780, a sister product to the recently announced Z770, set to extend its range of web-enabled phones into more markets across the globe. It packs tri-band 3G and HSDPA into its stylish frame, letting you receive email, browse the web or download content at high speed in countries across the world. It also introduces built-in aGPS, giving users the opportunity to carry their navigation solution with them on their phone.

“The Z780 has been developed to expand the use of Sony Ericsson’s web-enriched phones into more markets worldwide,” said Martin Winkler, Director of global marketing and head of multimedia web at Sony Ericsson. “This latest clamshell phone is what we describe as ‘Web 2.0 Ready’, meaning that it provides a fast, easy, safe and rich web experience that’s incredibly intuitive. The addition of aGPS makes the Z780 an even more exciting prospect, as you can pinpoint your location in seconds and find your way with the help of Google™ Maps for Mobile.”

Z780 phone

Always connected, never lost

Built-in aGPS – pinpoint your location in seconds and find your way with navigation from Google™ Maps for Mobile

Easy email setup – Exchange ActiveSync® and simple webmail set-up

Optimised web browsing – high speed (HSDPA) browsing and downloads plus unique Mobile Web features offer an easy, fast, safe and rich web experience

In touch, on the move

The built-in aGPS functionality of the Z780 means that wherever you are, you’ll always be able to find what you need. Search for a nearby restaurant, locate the address of your friend’s party or find the quickest route to your next meeting. With the latest version of Google™ Maps for Mobile, you can view high quality maps that give you a satellite view of the local area and view listings of the restaurants and hotels, complete with any reviews or ratings available. Google™ Maps enables you to receive turn-by-turn directions that help you to find your way without complication.

Easy email, simple setup

Accessing your emails on the Z780 couldn’t be more straightforward. With an automatic webmail setup, you can create an account in a series of very easy steps or just set it up so that your existing email account is directed to your phone. Any new emails are then instantly transferred, or ‘pushed’, from your Yahoo! or Google™ account, for example, and delivered directly to your phone. It really is that simple.

What you want, when you want it

Accessing your favourite websites is now four times faster than with standard 3G (UMTS), thanks to the Z780’s tri-band HSDPA speeds. If you use one particular website more than others, you can select an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) ticker that will give you 1-click access directly to this page from your phone’s desktop. What’s more, the pre-loaded weather forecast application allows you to check the weather before you head out, so you’re sure to be prepared for any unexpected rainstorms.

Take, tag, tailor

With its straightforward 2.0 megapixel camera, taking photos and uploading them onto your own online photo gallery or blogsite has never been easier. You can choose where on the web you want to upload them, whether that’s Facebook or Flickr™, for example, or your very own site.

If you prefer to store your memories on your phone, and use it as your ‘pocket photo album’, then the Z780’s built-in aGPS serves as more than just an aid to navigation. Any photos that you take can be tagged with the location that you’re in when you take them. This makes it possible to then search through your media player and browse your photos according to where they were taken. Perfect for reviewing those holiday memories.

The Z780 is a strong complement to Sony Ericsson’s existing range of web-enabled phones. As well as extending the choice of aGPS devices, it introduces another Tri-Band HSDPA phone to add to the increasingly pan-global portfolio. It is a UMTS/HSDPA 850/1900/2100 and GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 phone that will be available in Grand Onyx and Amethyst Silver in selected markets from Q2 2008.

- ENDS -

Hope this pleases everyone! I am stoked. They are sending me a demo unit soon, and I will be sure to take lots of pictures and video for you drooling SE fans.

This phone sounds awesome!

I saw this. Basically it is the American version of the Euro Z770i, but it looks better and has Quadband GSM/EDGE + Triband HSDPA and aGPS to boot. I expect AT&T to pick it up next year as replacement to the Z750a.

I need to know of this model
if it's Bella, it'll definitely go to T-Mobile with NA1700

I wonder if it has auto-focus and/or flash

After waiting forever for the Z750, seems like the cycle is happening again LOL, at least the accessories are interchangable. I'm curious though, on paper it seems the phones are similar, but there is an improvement right?

Don't wonder. It doesn't have either. Just a 2.0MP fixed focus camera with 2.5x digital zoom

Z780 has the following benefits compared to the 1 year old Z750i
- Netfront 3.4 vs 3.3 builtin browser (3.4 works much like Opera Mini 4)
- Exchange ActiveSync
- Better Email handling
- RSS Desktop
- Pretty Sure that the Z780 will be 3.6Mbps HSDPA vs 1.8 on Z750i (not sure on this)

...yes.

They are simply recycling phones and throwing on a new coat of paint. It is good that they are trying to expand their NA 3G portfolio though -

* RSS Desktop - there is at least 1 report of someone flashing their Z750i on the Z750i thread and getting this. They didn't know why it was showing up.
* NetFront 3.4 - although still reduced by SE directly from what NetFront can REALLY do ... its a step UP from v3.3. v3.4 sync's with PC Suite with a folder in ur MyDocs folder (Sony Ericsson> Bookmarks) and you can simply drag & drop Firefox bookies there for future sync'ing. Really uses the 3G speeds for downloading, you get a slight pause when selecting a link but likely its due to network latency.
* Manage Messages! You can SAVE your SMS/MMS to the M2 card (prior you could only save SMS to the SIM card in limited space)! HUGE improvement for you players out there that have spying girlfriends that always check your phone, just set this up in the Manage Messages submenu and select M2 card. Just don't forget to pull the M2 out before handing over the beauty. Limit is whatever is free on the M2 card. Email as well .
*Geotagging: the latest craze, your photos have geographical info on the location of where they were taken.
* More professional design on the z780 as well.

hope we get that phone soon in Canada

Posted by: cmetom

I had the Z800i back in Australia in 2005 and loved it. Since moving to Canada I haven't been happy with what has been available in flip-phones so just have the very basic Samsung 417.

The Z780 looks to be what I've been waiting for - bigger screen, HSDPA vs. UTMS, much thinner, global 2G and 3G frequencies.. Only problem I'll be left with will be the terrible plans and service available from Rogers.

More at my bloggy

The at&t logo is pretty clear and this is an unannounced color as well.

^It could probably be an AT&T exclusive colour as well.

Point of clarification (I just checked my unbranded z750a) -- the z750a has RSS on the desktop -- shows up as a ticker, or can scroll through manually, or can turn it off.

Also -- you have a single option for all messages -- where to save them -- memory card, or phone. No option for each message type.

The unbranded z750s have RSS desktop (as stated before) and SMS/MMS messages can be saved/transferred/etc. Anyone have any idea of they'll offer NetFront 3.4 in a Firmware Update? I really don't know how SE handles things like that.
