Sony Ericsson k850i unreleased through at&t to make room for 8mp shooter.

I just got back from an at&t data road show, in which they're were many vendors to display existing and future handsets. On display were Sony Ericsson z750, Samsung Access and in confidence (lol) information on why the k850 was decided on not to be released... why you ask? At&t decided against releasing as to not have a highend Sony Ericsson on the shelf as another highend Sony Ericsson...,. This new Sony will be an 8 megapixel camera phone with 3g and Mobile TV, to be released by Christmas time. Now model number was available, but a codename is.... "Codename PIX" Now the info on the camera I have is, it is not interpolated to 8mp, but actually an 8mp cmos sensor camera. So look forward to this new device from at&t.

Holy crap. They are really starting to step their game up!

Posted by: bodeh6

I highly doubt this. Not I don't believe you but the closet thing in the SE pipeline this year is Shiho, ie the K850i replacement. It will be released in October/November, feature 7.2MP, and a slider design similar to the Japanese SO905iCS. I believe this phone is too rich for AT&T's lineup, plus I don't want to see AT&T rape this beauty.

Posted by: FattyChalupa

When you say Shiho, are you referring to the Japanese model with the Cybershot sliding cover and optical zoom? Now although I really want to believe you I'm a bit skeptical right now looking at the feature sets of current at&t phones. Unless Sony Ericsson makes an announcement for a European GSM variant for a phone beforehand, it is extremely rare for a US carrier to have such an exclusive high end camera phone

Posted by: bodeh6

FattyChalupa that is the SO905iCS in Japan. Shiho is the version the rest of the world will get. It has not been announced yet and there is nothing set in stone. Just the rumored specs I mentioned above.

Posted by: SuxBeingU

The 850 coming or not coming to ATT has ZERO to do with any future handsets that may or may not be in developement. If there is it will NOT be out by Xmas they are clearing the calender for the holiday season for the X1 and nothing else.

japanese market is the test market, look at so505i and look what it turned out, s710a, w900i...so it woudlnt be surprising. But SE needs to use more design elements from japan on most of their phones, at least their flips could use some more of that design like how z750i somewhat does

I hope that person knows that the K850i was probably the last K-Series. Cybershot phones are now C class like the C702 and C902.

Posted by: altNz

Maybe this is the start of direct transfer of Japanese Market phones directly to the world, because of the DoCoMo thing.

Now this is not true, there have been phones released in the states before a european or even asian release, like the T-mobile shadow. Maybe not extremely highend, but it has happened.

Plus all of this info comes from the Sony Ericsson rep, and the way she explained it to me, it makes sense why we had to get rid of all the 850 pop the day we got it. At&t had a price point, a sku and material for the 850 and then scraps it. Hell they even had the devices branded and boxed ready for shipment, then decided to EOL it before it hit store shelves. How do I know? Because we had the devices on my shelf for 5 hours and then told to return them, as they were EOL.

Now its not extremely hard to believe that SE would release this highend device before the european markets, if they are trying to capture US market share.

They didn't even give you any to take home?!! That's a stupid waste

No nothing to take home. The whole thing started, when I asked her why the 850 was EOL in 1 day. And this is what she explained to me (in a whisper)

Posted by: penpower

Does it hurt ATT to sell k850 for good half year and then release the newer one by xmas? I think k850 and the "supposed" high end will both serve their customers well. Not everyone will fork out 300+ for the higher end when k850 might just do the job well for them. Consider all the time and money they put in for testing the phone, it is a big waste.

Posted by: ItalianAngel831

let see they can't give us an 5 mega pixel camera cellphone but we supposed to believe by the end of the year they r gonna sell a 8 mega pixel camera cellphone i don't believe this at all
it already almost may and aren't we even selling a 3 mega pixel camera cellphone i don't think they r just gonna jump right to 8 mp camera. so there are 2 comments that say it coming how do we know that the orginal poster did not read that comment and just repeat it. and the first who person know where they got that info from. they could b just starting a rumor.

Not only is this info wrong BUT "E" had no right nor reason to say that, shes knows its not true, I think you're making this up to get some street cred on HoFo.
Furthermore, BE CAREFUL what yoyu post, you could be jepordizing her job posting this stuff. CLEARLY people from higher up than her are reading this and know EXACLY what show, where and who you are throwing under the bus. I hope her boss doesn't read this or believe it

Let this be a lesson to the reps here, don't trust anyone with confidential info, if this is true, they'll throw you under the bus !!

You may be right, it may not be true... But it is the only information anyone has gotten about why the 850 was not released. I should let everyone know, that as of right now this is only speculation. Just whispered and hushed words.

I don't mean to get anyone in trouble. Just passing information.

The k850 is a great phone and all but I'm sure SE and AT&T will be able to bring us something better. The newer C class of SE's are pretty good.

I was able to get some information through our SE rep, he said that AT&T got tired of the phone, since it was supposedly old news. He went on to say, "...what happened is the competition got it."

I'll let anyone say or think what they want. This came from a SE rep... it does suck that AT&T didn't release it, however I'm holding out for a newer SE. .... I guess, good luck to me.

Posted by: CyberMoto

The something better is the Moto 5MP with Kodak. That's why cingy does not want to sell the K850. The K850 will kill the new Moto.

Interesting news I got today from the AT&T store. I told the young lady helpin' me that I had a K850i, and she said something to this effect:

"Oh, that's a sweet phone. We have the signs and stuff in the back. They cancelled its release. We just learned to keep the signage and display stuff for it, cuz they're gonna release it after all. We'll have a new date for release soon."

I was, and still am, a little skeptical. Makes sense. A new firmware just came out that supposedly fixed the bugs, so maybe they're gonna do it after all. Doesn't make much sense for them to have all the phones branded, shipped, and ready to go and cancelling it altogether. Anyways, why would the girl lie? Who knows.

I would be much more ready to believe that AT&T shelved the idea of releasing the k850i based purely on the unreliability of the phone, and all the software issues it's had pretty much across the board. I've been poised to pull the trigger and buy the phone several times, but then I read one or two more horror stories here and abroad on other forums about it's random reboots, shutting down, resets, "BROD" syndrome...and I decide to hold onto my money for something less buggy and incident prone.

AT&T probably is minimizing the return factor of the phone. I mean, why do a release of a phone that is a known problematic device, knowing full well that you will get tons of returns from unhappy customers.

Nope...if AT&T is the careful marketers that I know they are...they will stay put, and rest on the sure laurels of the upcoming iPhone-2 and BlackBerry 9000 Bold that are to be released almost in tandem, and then release a high-end SE device. That is...if SE can figure out a way of developing and releasing a phone anymore that's not chock full of software glitches and bugs.

This has to be one of those weird corporate decisions that someone should study in business school. While I can see why ATT wouldn't want two similar phones going on sale at the same time, surely they wouldn't lose money on it. Given all the sunk costs one would think it would be useful to get some of the costs back by selling for at least some period of time.

Posted by: lowegg

The k850 is a great phone but davistld01 said it, why get market a phone that's going top bug itself back to the store or warranty.

Hopefully they do release it then again if they don't I'd look into the Sony Ericsson C902.

Posted by: SuxBeingU

the C902 isn't banded for states, they could add them in but it would be cheaper to realese the 850. Though I can also say I have not heard this. Last I heard was the k850 IS DEAD DEAD DEAD for ATT. thats the exact quote

Posted by: hammy2003

Went to a different AT&T location today... got the same story. Looks like this is a possibility still. Doesn't matter I guess, I already have mine, and have been showing it off since I got it. I really should be a Sony Ericsson rep. That'd be sweet.

I haven't come across an AT&T employee who knows or heard anything about 'project PIX.' LOL. Doesn't surrise me, though.

Posted by: MCKINNIE

It makes sense to start selling the phone now that the bugs are supposedly worked out. Maybe they can release it pretty soon. Or would they have to test it all over again?

If it does come out, you better believe I will be getting it. I mean I have a digital camera but that's a pain to carry around. 5MP in my pocket sounds great.

Posted by: SuxBeingU

Not Going To Happen

Posted by: tjmonkey15

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but it's sort of coincidental that the specs for the next SE Cybershot phone were released and it'll have an 8mp camera, US 3G, and should be released in time for X-mas. I can't see AT&T actually going out on a limb and picking up this phone though....for the 20 of us Hofo nerds that would buy it, too expensive for your average Joe Schmoe the cell phone user

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but could this be it?

Posted by: MCKINNIE

Whoops, someone beat me to it... but I had a link

If the price is right, I just might have to own this...

Posted by: shazeh

wow, i hope att doesnt let us down with this one like they did k850

Posted by: SHoTTa35

hehe, someone beat me to it too..

Does look like it could be it and that would be a killer phone. Sux it's probably not for me

Posted by: shazeh

i would love to see this phone get released, but as we all know, if there is any company that can ruin this release, its ATT

Posted by: CyberMoto

You said it about AT&T. I was talking to the AT&T guy last week at a local Corp store. I said to bad AT&T killed the K850. He said he was looking forward to the release of the K850. I told him I heard AT&T would bring out the N95 Nokia. He said they where. But we both agree the phone is old. sSnce the N96 is out or do soon. He did say how long it took AT&T to bring out the N75.

the k850? they killed that one off....

Posted by: MCKINNIE

yeah, thats what he meant. he was looking forward to the release of it, but it got canned so now he can't get it. (subsidized and at&t branded, anyway)
