Finally! New MobileChat version supports modifying server info = T-zones works!!!)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

This is what I've been waiting for! Now you can modify the server connection settings when you create an AIM account w/ MobileChat (or any other account). I knew instantly that this meant that you can connect to AIM on MobileChat over T-zones as I had previously done in the old days with IM+ and Agile on my Windows Mobile Phones.

Just modify the server settings when you create an account to:

Server: login.oscar.aol.com
Port: 110

I was able to log in, lock my phone, and after an hour I was still online! The connection is very stable and it works great! Discuss your results in this thread!

*note - if MobileChat keeps restarting back to the springboard after you connect, just repeatedly tap the "Settings" button so it won't crash.

Enjoy!

very nice! thanks for the heads up. i really wish mobilechat supported multiprocol like meebo. but this is just as good.

what's the version that's out right now? i'm using 2.23-2 off of bigboss's repo from cydia. problem is that it crashed just like before. goes right back to springboard right after connection

That's the latest; I had that problem also. Run your finger on the screen while it tries to connect. This version is still buggy, but at least it supports T-zones =)

Posted by: hunter1234

interesting. i got it to connect but after i started chatting and went back to the springboard, i couldn't get it to run again. but this is pretty good so far. thanks for the tip again.

does anyone else have a black convo screen?
anything that people type in i can't see

Posted by: MadFlava

Doesnt work for me. I cant get it to save my accounts. Anyone got any suggestions?

Posted by: hunter1234

did you do a clean install? uninstall the old and install the new.

Posted by: Ashhong

does it still crash the iphone like every other chat client?

Posted by: rigmahx

I am experiencing the same problem. Once i sign onto AIM, mobilechat crashes to the home screen. Ive tried tapping the settings button, but it is still crashing.

Is there a fix for this?

Yeah, it was working fine last night for me... but today it kept crashing, even with tapping the settings button.

It's definitely a bug in MobileChat because I know I've been able to get on with ZERO issues and for days with this server/port combo on previous phones. I'm going to see if there is a fix or anything out there. If not, we have to wait for the next release of MobileChat.

Over T-zones?

Posted by: rigmahx

Mobilechat version 2.23 and up do not require the IM chat fix.

Ive been trying everything to get it to work but no luck.

Wicked3d-g - Any luck getting it to not crash?????

Nope, unfortunately it's still happening. I'm looking for a fix but nothing is available. It crashes at the white screen after connecting while it's trying to load the buddy list.

Posted by: rigmahx

yeah, i can see my buddy list start to download then it crashes to the home screen....

Hopefully the MobileChat team will have a fix soon. I'm going to forward this thread to them

Doesnt help but thanks.. I even tried manually removing the old files. Im almost wondering if its a permission issue with the im accounts file.

A little too late? Fring works fine, is persistent and supports a crapload of networks..

It doesn't work over T-zones... I don't care about Wi-Fi connectivity. MobileChat and Apollo work perfect over Wi-Fi so no need for Fring.

Oh? Since when? I managed to carry on a convo with my buddy on MSN during a 2 hour car drive today (I wasn't driving, don't worry). I use t-zones.

On the other hand, it's mobilechat and apollo which crash for me whenever I connect via t-zones (wifi is fine).

So for me, Fring hands down.

Did you try it with AIM? I can use MSN over t-zones with MobileChat.

Posted by: Airkat

I only used it with AIM, I only ventured out to trying Skype and MSN once I found an app that actually worked. In the beginning the program worked fine, then on day, I started getting the crash on connect like many have.

It's not a matter of just a fresh install either as once my GF got her iPhone I installed mobilechat on there and it did the same.

No, I meant are you able to log in to AIM with fring over T-zones?

Oh, my bad. Yeah, I use AIM, Skype and MSN concurrently

Hmmm.... Did you have to do anything to get it to work? Because fring just hangs on "connecting" and will not go anywhere over T-zones but connects fine over Wi-Fi.

Posted by: wick3d-G

Not sure how AirKat has Fring working over T-zones... Because I cannot connect.

I just tried SSH'ing and applying the following commands:

-chmod -R 777 /Applications/Chat.app
-chmod -R 777 /Applications/Chat.app/MobileChat
-chown mobile:wheel /Applications/Chat.app
-chown mobile:wheel /Applications/Chat.app/MobileChat

But it does not solve the crashing issue. =/

Posted by: Airkat

Nope, nothing special. To note, I have the 19.99 plan and my girlfriend has the 4.99 plan

Of course you will get on w/ the $19.99 (That's the internet plan, not the T-zones). Is your GF able to get on Fring with the $4.99 plan? that's the million doillar question, heh.

Posted by: Airkat

YES, I don't know how many ways I gotta say this lol.

FRING WORKS 100% ON BOTH MY PHONE AND MY GIRLFRIENDS PHONE WHILE MOBILECHAT AND APOLLO DOES NOT! I HAVE THE 19.99 PLAN SHE HAS THE 4.99 PLAN. SHE USES AIM ON FRING, I USE AIM, MSN AND SKYPE ON MY FRING.

We didn't have to do anything but install it. I notice you're in CA, perhaps different markets behave differently (it has in the past when they originally blocked port 80)

Posted by: MadFlava

FWIW, I ended up chmod'ing the directory where prefs and account info is stored to 777 and that solved my problem. I forget which director it was.

Posted by: rigmahx

MadFlava, can you walk through what you did step by step.

Since modding my iphone, i have been able to avoid SSHing to my phone.

Can you confirm that MobileChat works with Tzones 5.99 plan over edge with the CHMOD fix you mentioned?

Preferences I know, but which account info are you referring to? The MobileChat account?

Posted by: wick3d-G

I ended up Chmod'ing both Preferences and the MobileChat account files but it still is crashing. I guess it just depends on the area where you live whether it will work or not.

Until the developer addresses the EDGE connection issue... Beejive it is.

Posted by: AznJohn22

i tired downloading Mobilechat version 2.0.0b. It would say, "Error Package Download Failed."

Posted by: AznJohn22

I got mobile chat working but would crash. any solution?

Posted by: DisposableHero

mine crashes too =(

at least working on edge shows progress!

Posted by: oojosheoo

I have Firmware 1.1.4 and installed MobileChat 2.23

It has never worked for me with EDGE. It trys to connect and load the buddy list but crashes and takes me back to the Home Screen.

I tried WIFI and it worked but that defeats the purpose. When im at home ill rather use my iMAC then my iphone.

Oh yeah sorry i do not have the T-zone Plan I have the 19.99 Total internet Plan which should work.
Any Luck with you guys?

Posted by: mkgino

What exactly do you type in to the Server and Port spaces to get it to work for MSN messenger?? I dont have an AOL account

Posted by: mkgino

This program sucks. First of all, msn doesnt even connect over edge. Secondly, AOL starts to connect, but when it gets to 3/4 of logging in, the thing crashes. It even crashes when trying to put your information in when creating an account.

I would rather pay when something good comes out that can run in the background over t-zones edge then continue to use this piece of junk.

Posted by: gosteven

I am on 1.1.4 and have tzones hack on mine along with the changes to the plist. I also have the IM fix that i got from Cydia installer. It still crashes when im on edge right before loading buddy list. Ive tried fring as well and it gives me the reconnecting when on edge. Im located in florida.

I agree with mkgino, if someone made a reliable one that worked on edge i would pay for it.

Posted by: mbdragon55

i have the $19.99 plan and i try to connect and it loads the buddy list vibrates the phone and than crashes back to the homescreen...do you guys know how to fix this??....im guessing this problem is with the people with t-zones.

Posted by: gosteven

I just did the whole forward IMs to my phone and it works fine like that. Im always online and dont have to worry. Sucks I cant see my buddy list in full but you can send ims, recieve, put away message up, available message, invisible, see your buddy list (dosent show full for me cause i have a lot)

Best bet until theres a solid program that will work 100%
