Bought a PPC 6700 on ebay, worked without activation

It is a used phone to be used with alltel. I could browse the internet without wif turned on, use skype etc. Then last night while messing around I deleted a username and pswd without writing it down. am very mad at myself. someone please tell me why it worked and can i ever get free and if not please tell me it was only temporary or that someone was going to get billed so it's better i don't have it. i guess i'll activate it now. blahhh.

possibly still active from the last person you bought it from. that could turn out to be a bad thing.

but, i do know one of the sprint phones i bought still had all the data active, but was clear to be registered by myself

thanks for your reply. i was consoling myself with the fact this was 1. not ethical anyway. 2. charges might have been going on someone else's bill.
i had alltel service put on the phone yesterday and without the expensive data plan i am still getting internet via cell phone connection and not just wireless (which they think they should be charging 10.00 a month for lol!) i thought i wouldn't be getting 1x or EV internet without signing up. do you know what's up with that?
