Centro - Difference between Email programs?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Wife got her Centro today and I'm wondering if there's any major reason to choose between VersaMail and the Sprint Mail.

Her email account is through GMail and that's the only account she has.

Which email system would you recommend and why if there's a difference?

Thanks.

OP, did you ever get an answer to this? I'm a new Centro owner and am wondering the same thing....

Apparently Gmail has an app for Windows devices but not for Palm devices. However I found information here that says you can get a certain and make it work:

I haven't tried it though so don't know if it would work on the Centro or not.

Right now I just use the website.

The difference (for me, at least) is that VersaMail WILL NOT retrieve my Gmail, no matter what I try and how I do it; and that Sprint Mobile Mail works perfectly every time, zero complaints.

OK, another newbie question -
Are the two email apps (VersaMail & Sprint Mobile Mail) treated the same in terms of billing? (i.e., I am on a new SERO plan - are both "included"?)

Thanks!

Versamail works great for my gmail.

Versamail account settings for myself
Mail type: IMAP
Username: Whatever yours is
IncomingMail Server:
imap.gmail.com
Outgoing mail server:
smtp.gmail.com
Advanced settings -
Incoming Server Settings: port number 993
Select use secure connection (SSl)
Outgoing Server Settings: port number 587
Select use secure connection(SSL)
Select use authentication(ESMTP)
retype username and password

Enable IMAP in your gmail account

I just tested it again and it works from my gmail to gmail account, but for some eason i can not view messages when sent from an outlook account. Weird. I will have to check on that.

Ok so my problem with outlook was the way outlook is configured t send messages. it was set up to compose emails in HTML format. When i changed it to plain text it worked fine.

Another thing too.

You will also want to change your preferences in your versamail
go to incoming under the preferences menu and change maximum message size to 5000 kb. if you don't do this it will give you anerror saying the message has been truncated.

Hope all of this helps configuring the versamail options.

Did your Sprint Mobile Mail setup quickly drain your battery?

I set up Spring Mobile Mail to pick up my email, and within 6 hours my battery drained from 95% charged to < 10% charged with no calls or usage in between there.

I have my email set so I have to retrieve it myself. This will save battery power. If you set it up to auto retrieve mail it will drain battery power. I wish Palm would come out with a an extended battery for the centro, but doesn't look like it is yet available.

Your wish has been fulfilled by Seidio. They have an extended battery for centro...

There was a bug in Sprint Mobile Email that drained the battery, but if you update to the most recent version they fixed that. For GMail, using Sprint Mobile Email's "push" feature gives me much better battery life than Versamail, and I get the emails faster.

I just realized that when I view the 'Agenda' page in the calendar and have it set to display new messages, it links to Versamail instead of Sprint Mail, even though I have Sprint Mail set as my default app. I looked through the Calendar Options menus, but couldn't find the solution to switch this. Anybody else have this problem?

Just to bump this again, I did some playing around before with Versamail (I think) and I could get it to retrieve the messages sent directly to the gmail account but not the messages that Gmail fetched from a different account. And this is 99% of the email so it didn't work.

Has anyone tried the actual gmail.prc app to know if that actually work at all?

Take a look at Agendus Mail. It has a lot of nice integration between Mail and the other PIM applications. Take an email and copy it to a task/memo/calendar entry. Easily get from the TO: field to the contact that sent the email.

I just downloaded it, but it's pretty lo-res and flickers alot. I'll stick with Sprint Mail for now.
