Why Keitai?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Okay, we all know that Keitais are amazing. But what really makes you go out and say "Whoa! I'm going to empty my wallet for that!" ? Is it form factor? Design? Capabilities?

Personally, I think I'm just a gadget addict. I like shiny things. Keitais are most certainly shiny and they stick out from the hoards of Crackberries, Motos, and Samsungs that seem to dominate in the US. Not only have keitais established my position as 'the phone guy' on campus, they've also led to me getting a date.

Posted by: yamagatacamille

For me, the mobile phones offered in North America are quite vanilla. When I first got my 707SC, I was so enthused that I have this sweet-lookin phone that no one I know owns. Also this is definitely the gadget lover in me is jumpin for joy. Despite some functions not working here across the ocean, the rest most certainly outweighs that.

sadly, no dates for me since changing to keitai

riel's edit: I translated this one for you, but from now on, English only alright? =)

Who still remembers that story I told about going on a date with the phone store gal?

I like keitai's because of the design. In general, Japanese manufacturers pay more attention to detail than others.

More specifically, I like Sharp's because of their gorgeous swivelling screens.

Posted by: gunadz

Hehe, yeah I remember reading that a while ago.

What can I say? We asians look good, but add in a hot bit of techno-bling and we're irresistible.

Posted by: allmotorsi

For me it's having a phone not everyone has. Even though we are now seeing more Keitai's in North America, you won't see 1 out of 10 people having one. Unlike the Motorola V3 which at work, 1 out of 3 people have one.

Posted by: Kakashi

Because I don't want to use the same phone everyone else is using.

Posted by: murdoc2k

hmm.. gee I guess I missed out on riel's story =( I'd love to hear it Lol.. I just got my keitai so I'm getting a bit excited (what if I CAN MEET A GIRL TOO?!)

well for me.. I didn't study much about cellphones until recently where I started watching japanese drama and going crazy about almost anything Japanese. I saw the docomo commercials and the phones that the artists were using and I couldn't stop drooling thinkin "oh gee if I can get that phone...". My hopes were all gone until recently when I was reading this forum that 905s can be unlocked!!! It was like... a miracle!

I have to say I wish I had more patience and waited cause phones now (even on ebay) are dropping down to approx 500 (with shipping + docks + charger) and for some... even USB data cable and screen protectors (it might not be ebay but there are certainly sources like that).

The deals are going cheaper and cheaper. lol.dqn had to lower his/her price to 555 + 24 for shipping with dock and charger for p905 (I bought mine at 610 with shipping).

If we were to talk about phone specs... I think after learning so much from this forum, Jap phones aren't that advanced (as I hoped it would be). However, it seems like they are able to make really nice screens and screen size at 3.0 - 3.2 inch screens which is optimal for a compact phone with relatively big screens for watching movies and such. I really appreciate Japanese design. I think the design was what attracted me the most out of all. I also wanted to be unique in such a way that if I was to walk out in the streets and flip open my phone that the guy next to me won't be using the very same one. I'm proud of having jap phones for it's uniqueness (hoping that not too many others in Toronto will own one). The price I had to pay however.. is double.

I see that most people are going for 905SH so I'm glad I choose P905 which offers relatively flashy specs for Jap phones with nice looks.

Posted by: shungo

I searched and looked for Japanese phones for over 3 years. But I never had one in hand. It is either too expensive or it cannot be unlocked. After the 903SH of vodafone and some other phones, no phones were able to be unlocked. Softbank made a lot of their cell phones JAPAN ONLY, which mean they do not support GSM. I gave up after that. However, when I hear that Docomo phones can be unlocked with the sim hack, I was surprised and got back into the Keitais. Now I finally bought a Japanese cell phone, SO905i and I am looking forward to it when I pick it up in Japan. Why Keitai? I went to study in Japan for a year and I used AU(because it was the cheapest one for students). I found Docomo phones are more cooler and the specs is way better. And of course, way better than the phones in North America. But I didn't have money. Now I can finally get a hand on Docomo phones, which is very good

most likely, form factor, innovation, and design for me

Posted by: gunadz

Remember! Keitai's aren't really that expensive when you compare them to other flashy 'fashion' phones. When the RAZR V3 first came out, it was $600 w/ contract and 800 without! :O

Posted by: Sturmtruppen22

and thats domestic price, i was expecting the 905is to be more than 1k

wow.. I couldn't imagine a moto phone having a 600 dollar price tag lol..

Posted by: ke0la

keitai's are just straight-out sweet, and all of the above!

Posted by: joshyth

it's mostly just excitement for me to try it out since i have never used one before, though i'll probably going back to use Nokia, or Euro-SE (Note: not the JP-SE) after awhile when i can't stand it anymore. The restriction video and audio and no internet usage on keitai is my main problem with these phone. The sim-hack is another frustration for me, have to do 3 CPR on the phone already in one week -_- Also, Moto still got phone around the 500-600 range (q9h) .

Posted by: riel

joshyth, you broke into your SIM hack and phone when it was new right? After I broke them in, I didn't get problems anymore.

Posted by: towairaito

having a unique phone not eveyone else have. i got attracted with their nice design, quality, cool features and options (locking the phone book) that no european phones have the options like that.

keitai's are AMAZING!

I don't know exactly what you mean (sorry, i have limited knowledge on sim hack), but I usually go to the city next to where I live every other week, which there is a area there is no signal at all on any of the big 4 carriers here in US along that highway. Last week after I left that area, my P905i just won't pick up the signal again even after I got home that night, while my N95 work perfectly fine. Am starting to get tire of doing CPR to the phone.

You need to put your SIM + SIM hack into your N95 for a couple days when it's new, call in, call out, sms in, sms out, etc. Then put it into your Japanese phone. Do the calling and sms-ing. This is called breaking into your phone.

I understand what you mean when you said your phone doesn't reconnect. I have the same problem at my office.

Here's the solution:
When you're about to lose signal, turn "Self Mode" on. This is essentially the "Airplane Mode" that you might be familiar with. The phone is still on, but will not receive any signals from your carrier.

When you are in the area that you know will have signal, turn "Self Mode" off. Within minutes, your phone should be able to reconnect without need for CPR.

It is recommended for you to break into your phone and SIM hack before attempting the Self Mode solution.

oh, i did put the sim hack with my sim card in the n95 for about 2 days, i'll give it a go again and left it in there for about maybe 1 or 2 extra days and see how it go. Thank for explaining it, and the tip on the self mode.

I'd have to say that phone looks just like a blackberry =/ If I had to pay $600 for that phone, I'd buy iphone instead lol.

No problem. Self Mode really helped me a lot. Doing CPR is time consuming and just felt too much for a phone. Phones are supposed to make your life easier right?

Yeah, wish i got that Asimo robot in your avatar, that would definitely make my life easier.

I live in Japan so the term Keitei just means mobile phone to me.

Whats the difference?

Back in UK we call them mobiles

Curious

Posted by: takumi906

we refer to keitai as japanese cell phones to differentiate from north american/euro/etc. and japanese cell phones.

Here's one for starters

The Razr D&G limited edition (not the one that sold here but the V3i that was on sale in Dolce boutiques in Europe) was selling on Ebay for $3k! Moto was the most innovative company wayyyy back when.

As for J-phones; they have better displays, tend to look nicer/be thinner/etc, and are just different. I love 'em. I don't use my 707SCII much anymore but it's still the thinnest phone I own!

Posted by: riel

I've got no love for Moto's at all lol.

kaneman, post some pics of your 707SCII will ya?

wow.. that's pretty amazing. So they started that whole thing about Fashion x Phones first?

Most J-phones aren't really thinner to be honest. The Razr will beat it in terms of thiness. There are only a few out there that can challenge razr's thinness and that's N905iu. What's good about J-phones is their crazy design that makes them look so hot!

Posted by: yamagatacamille

Throw in another contender that is actually thinner than the RAZR and that's the aforementioned 707SC(II).

Posted by: joshyth

N705iμ is even more thinner than 707SCII, and it's a 3G phone too, too bad is doesn't work on GSM or i would have got that phone instead of my p905i.

*checks specs of 705iμ phones*

with the exception of D705iμ (10.3mm), the other 705iμ phones are at a ridicurously thin 9.8mm!!! it definitely makes the 707SC(II) look like a fatty.

Posted by: murdoc2k

Yeah but for some reason D705iμ looks like a Sony Ericson phone... I think it's K850i? And no offense, but that phone looks crap lol.. I just don't like their buttons.
