Ringtone problem with ATT Shine

So with my older motorola's (razr's and such) I could just put any old file as a ringtone. With this shine seems anything over 300kb in size says its too large a file. Anything that I make under 300kb sounds like crap because I have to cut the quality out..
Any suggestions. I've been cutting my own using garageband ad exporting the files.
