Hey everyone,

My T-mobile contract ends in September, and I'm looking to get a new contract, maybe even switch carriers. Which is better nowadays though in terms of reception quality, etc in San Diego and LA (san gabriel)?

Also, my current phone is a 2 year old samsung d600, which I'm looking to replace. My budget is max 300, and I was looking for something that doesnt need a super duper camera, but still sports mp3, video, microsd hotswap, and maybe a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Some suggestions by others include k800, k850, and 6120 classic.
Any of these good? or should I wait for something else?

Final question-- when phones say they have WLAN or wifi, does that mean I can pick up wireless internet like my laptop does, or do I have to pay $XX to my carrier to get broadband internet like those iphone people?

Thank you so much

Peace!

what carrier are you using now? wifi phones are just like a laptop, it has nothing to do with the carrier. i say use ATT and get a 3G phone to use the high speed network. i use n95-4 on ATT and enjoy it. i'm in socal in temecula, and frequent the LA area.

I have T-mobile that ends in September, and I go to school in San Diego, and live in San Gabriel area. Just called t-mo and they said that we use 1900 and 850 in cali.

Do you recommend any phones?

i believe san diego has a decent 3G network on ATT, it was one of the first cities that had 3G rolled out a few years ago. someone correct me if i'm wrong, but i think the SD coverage is excellent. my recommendations would be the n95-3 or -4 because they are the only ones that work with US 3G HSDPA. so its kinda limited. if you dont care about 3G, and are fine with any GSM quadband phone, then the options are endless. any N series nokia. some of the SE phones are nice. etc etc

So its just like you said, WLAN picks up wireless like laptops do? If so, then thats all I really would like from a new phone, plus a good mp3/video player and fm radio. I dont really need a good camera, because I have a canon sd800IS, which I barely even use.

n95-3(4) might be a bit pricey, but would you recommend E51? Also, I'm planning to stick with t-mo if prices stay same in september, so will it make a diff which carrier i use with those phones?

Thanks again

As long as 3G doesn't matter to you and coverage is fine, there's no reason what so ever to switch carriers. I've heard good things about the E51, especially regarding its small size, but have only had the chance to play with its' older brothers, the E90 and E61, so I can't really comment on usability day to day.

no it wont matter if you stay with tmobile. generally the N series phones have a better music player than the E series phones. but the e51 is an awesome phone and i was wanting to even pick one up. a new thread just popped up in the s60 forum where the e51 was being sold for 260 USD i think. grab it while its hot.

Wirelessly posted (HTC Wizard: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.11) PPC; 240x320; HTC_P3600i/1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1)

The music player on the E series devices has never impressed me to much, but it's definitely not horrible and will serve its main purpose of playing music fine. The main problem is that there's no Active Standby plugin to control it and the E series models don't have dedicated music controls like on the N95.

Well, none that you mentioned have 3.5mm, so they wouldn't make great music phones. For you price point, what about the 5310? It has an music player (with dedicated music buttons), hot-swappable microSD, video recording and playback, and a 3.5mm on a very thin body!

Thanks for recommending 5310 (which looks awesome), but I'm looking for a phone that has mp3/video, fm radio, 3.5mm, AND WLAN(wifi) to go online with. I'm looking for something to replace my sammy d600, which has all of those, except the wlan and 3.5mm(cuz it has a headset already).

Thanks again!

This may give you a hint:
http://hotspot.t-mobile.com/services_need.htm

I thought only the i-phone and windows Mobile devices offered wifi, but I guess I'm wrong.

Try this also:

(check "hotspot@home" to see wifi phones.)

The Dash is a decent device, has everything you need/want.

Here you go list of phones with Wi-Fi & 3.5 mm headphone jack. Not much to choose from & all are going to cost more than 300.00. Some use memory cards some don't.
Here is a list of phones with Wi-Fi, MicroSD slot, there are more phones but these all have 850mhz to work on T-Mobile. 1 phone I know isn't listed is the HTC Touch Enhanced (P3452).
What is limiting you is 3.5 mm, manufactures haven't figured out to add a standard headphone jack. A 300.00 budget. Very few Wi-Fi enabled phones sell for less than 400.00 & most are closer to 500. & up.
On a side note your contracts up in September, that gives quite a while to look at whats coming & try to save a little more money. Since you will get it with contract that will save some money.
