Here is some pics of my Brand New Z9 & a few of its tricks!!(sorry the plastic is still on, it's even more beautiful underneath!)

The at&t retail package

Phone Pics

2MP Camera/Video w/ Flash

Awesome Navigation System

Full Opera Html Browser

Beautiful Large Screen for Videos(CV, MobiTv, or your own)

Nice Gaming too on the large screen!

Menu's have sideways interface also during certain applications!

Menus fade in & out into each other!!(I tried to capture the effect)

Also submenus pop up and certain settings and menus zoom in & out at you(tried to capture the latter)

With 8GB storage capability, large crisp screen & stereo bluetooth compatibility the Z9 is a Media Monster! and it excels in other departments too!

please post more impressions - I am thinking of switching to att and getting this but have seen mixed reviews.

How do 3.5mm headphones input?

I had the Z9 for an very brief time. And, although I am simply not a "slider-guy"...here are my initial impressions...

Pros:
*Ultra-solid build quality - the largely metal construction makes it vault-like.
*Smooth, non-wobbly (read: non-N95-like) slider mechanism
*Excellent call quality & call volume - "new school" Moto CrystalTalk technology rocks!!
*Nice, colorful screen and display
*Updated Synergy OS - Apps fade on change, faster speeds, etc.
*Unique size and design - gets lots of looks from people who notice.

Cons:
*It's heavy!!! - Metal construction is solid, but makes it very hefty to hold.
*Reception is spotty - The Razr2 V8 & V9 are both stellar in this area. Why not the Z9?
*Keypad is stiff - Moreso than the V8/V9. Takes some adjustment.
*It's wide!! - It fills the hand completely, even if you have gorilla hands.
*No "thumb-bar" to aid opening slider - makes it almost clumsy and cumbersome to use

Like I said, my history with this phone was brief...but the Z9 definately has a personality all its own, and gives quick and lasting impressions. I think it's a great phone, if you like the slider form and can get over the sheer mass of the phone. If you can & will...then the Z9 might be your cup of tea.

Davistld, you only had the phone 1 day I think thats a little too short a time to make judgement.
I would have to agree for the most part though with a few exceptions.

*The reception seems good to me, though maybe not as stellar as the razr2 V9, but then nothing is.

*It may have seemed wide to you but it is the same width and thickness as the razr2 V9 but just a bit taller.(I've compared the two)

*"No thumb bar" Don't even know what that is but I sure don't have any problem at all opening and closing it and like you said the slider mechanism is excellent.

First off do it. I have extensively tested all 4 major carriers and went back and forth numerous times to finally come to the conclusion at&t is far superior to the other 3.(Verizon,t-mobile, sprint) I had to pay full price and could of got any phone in the store and the Z9 was my choice after inspecting them all. And you being a new customer can get it at at&t.com for $149.99 after $50 rebate as opposed to the $399 I paid to enjoy it being an existing customer.

Some impressions....

-Built like a tank(solid, impressive build quality)
-Beautiful finish & luxurious materials
-Large vibrant screen(about as big as they get on a non-pda phone)
-Love the futuristic keypad, looks sooooooo much nicer than the traditional buttons found on most cell phones
-Data & Menu navigation is extremely fast with processor & 3Ghsdpa(Even faster than V9)
-Loads iTunes and WMP11 music beautifully with album artwork
-Never thought I would like a slider but the Z9 won me over

You can use this headphone adapter. They sell them at at&t stores or motorola.com for cheap.

But what you really want is the Sony DR-BT22 bluetooth stereo headphones. They are so loud and clear and bass is awesome. Totally destroys an iPods sound quality. You can also send & receive calls from it. They can be picked up at at&t stores or online.

Thats funny, crazy cheap. I paid $399 plus tax=$430. New customers get all the breaks.

I only buy direct though so I don't even look at resellers prices, there are always stipulations attached.

Well, looks like the "little too short a time" that I had with the phone gave me impressions that you pretty much agree with , DukeL. So, maybe it was "short time" well spent.

BTW...your gushing and fawning over the phone is coming frighteningly close to sounding like those guys over on the Apple forum. Easy does it...

Like I said...it is a great phone, if you have a particular liking for sliders.

Hey well I own an iPhone too. It just sits on the glass table collecting dust though. Don't be mad. I love my Z9!

The stipulation from amazon is that you cannot change your plan for 6 months. But I don't plan on doing that anyway - I've had t-mobile for 10 years so I'm pretty set it my plan.

I'm looking to jump ship from vzw soon and looking into what phone I might want to get and have two questions for you.

Why didn't you buy an unlocked version for the same price you paid?

Coming from the vzw world I'm trying to get a handle on att service being sold in other venues besides corp stores and if there are any benefits to that route?

There is no unlocked version available of the Z9.

You are jumping into a very deep topic. Most people refer to unlocked phones as straight from the manufacturer with no carrier branding and can work on any gsm network. The real definition of an unlocked phone is a phone that is not locked to one provider. That said there are two different types of unlocked phones. 1. Phones purchased from a carrier and then unlocked to be used on another network. 2. Phones that come from the manufacturer which have the totally unbranded software meaning it has not been altered by the carriers requests what-so-ever and can be used on any gsm network(unlocked). The second might also have extra fetures that the carrier crippled in the branding process. For ex. Verizon is known to cripple Bluetooth transfer on many of their handsets to encourage customers to buy all content from Verizon. Even worse they just slap the same boring software onto most of their lineup instead of allowing the phone to ship with the manufacturers software. Gsm phones(at&t, tmobile) are normally more mildly branded but still the carrier often will disable or cripple many of the vital features that the manufacturer intended. This is one of the main benefits to buying an "unlocked" phone. It will work on any gsm network and if it is factory unlocked it will not have the carrier branded software but instead will have the Manufacturers(for ex. LG, Motorola, Nokia etc.) intended software.

Thanks for that clarification! I'm pretty sure I was referring to #2. I have been looking at stuff over at mobilecityonline, I used to live in nyc and they opened a store front in tribeca a few years ago and I've bought deep discounted accessories for my vzw stuff and used to ogle the gsm phones they had.

GSM is definitely the way to go. Especially now that they have dual radios(gsm & wcdma) the data is significantly faster than CDMA EVDO. Also WCDMA allows for simultaneous voice & data, a feature CDMA is not capable of. Plus if you don't like the carriers lineup, you can always buy an unlocked or overseas phone though they do often lack the correct WCDMA frequencies they will still get excellent reception as long as they have the GSM 850/1900 band.(You just wont have 3G)

I'm not too phone savvy as you can see from my vast and varied line up, but I am looking forward to the change and possibilities! Don't have the coins but an n95 would be nice, also looking forward to being able to use it if and when I go overseas (swapping the sim for a local prepaid I'm guessing).

Yah I don't do too much travelling but thats the idea!

I don't do it enough to be a selling point but every once in a while. I went to Mexico recently and my vzw had service in one town as we drove through it, while att customers sat at remote beaches and talked away!

Man, I am so disappointed that I just bought a stupid v3xx

Does the Z9 support animated wallpaper?

I'm going to start ATT soon. What kind of apps can you add to the Z9 and is there one for IM that doesn't use texts? I know it's java but am not sure what's out there since i've been trapped in verizon.

You can add any java app and there are thousands. Plenty of IM apps too but I don't IM so I couldn't specify.

Any recommended apps / sites for them?

Getjar.com is one of the most popular. There are plenty of free apps there as well.

looks like the Z9 might be for me!

I had a chance to play with the z9 and the phone is rock solid. As some have stated I'm not sure if I'm of the slider variety. However, the phone is so hot, that it may warrant a spin around the block.

Google maps work on this phone by chance? It would be nice to have something to utilize the GPS without paying $10 monthly.

I second that Q. I'm really interested in switching fror all these options.
And how does it work to navigate w/o using att's nav software?
Would it use airtime or do you need a data plan?

Ya, i would much rather pay $15 for medianet and be able to use Gmaps mobile than pay $10 just for navigation
