Need help removing P905i scratch marks!

I don't know why but after going out for lunch today, I've noticed my P905 has these weird scratch marks. I tried to remove it with microfiber cloth (a very soft and gentle cloth that will never scratch any shiny surface). I've tried rubbing it hard, wetting a soft towel and even tried applying some soap to remove those scratch marks but nothing works! This is how it looks like! Please help make some suggestions on what solutions I can get to remove those marks!

I'm still waiting for my iphone protection to arrive so I can protect that surface!

Is the surface still smooth, or do you actually feel the scratch marks? From that picture it's hard to tell if they're from scratching or from hard rubbing.

It feels smooth... no bumps...

try some rubbing alcohol ~ if it's oil or whatever.. it'll take it off..

Posted by: murdoc2k

the scratch marks are intensifying... I need more help. Does anyone have a solid 100% solution for this? I need it fast. My screen protectors have arrived. I just need to clean it off before I apply the protection.

Posted by: TokyoElbow

Can't you take it back and get it looked at?
I dont use protectors and Ive never seen anything like that, and Ive had a few phones hit the floor 100 or so times in the past.
it could be a crack within the glass and perhaps pressure on the glass is causing it to spread across the screen.
So if you cant feel them and they are gewtting worse then it must be inside and not surface.
or something is rubbing on the surface that your not aware of.

The phone comes from Japan. There's no warranty offered. Thanks for the tip. Looks like there's no fix for this.

Posted by: TokyoElbow

cant you send it back to Japan to get it fixed?
I live here so if you need any help let me know.

If it is a scratch...you should try using Displex or toothpaste since these are adhesive solutions. I never had any experience with any of these...

Is that a piece of film over the phone or is it just me? If not you could always try Brasso, it's a product that has been more popular recently for removing scratches from iPods (worked for me) but it really smells.

I tried tooth paste... the only thing that I got from it was the smell of toothpaste =/

I got mine from a grocery store for about $4 a couple of years back. It's a pretty well known metal polish (which gain popularity recently for removing scratches), so I recommend finding a friend or relative that might have it instead of buying it just to remove a little scratch.

A neat photo essay showing how it works with the original iPod Nano:

Oh, goto Home Depot, I bought Brasso there. If you apply the screen protector, is the scratch still there?

I'm kinda skeptical about it but I guess I can give it a try. It looks very magical but I've seen on the web where brasso ended up scratching the person's ipod screen in the end and made everything worse.

The screen protector is just a layer of plastic which shields the mirror like material from a potential scratch or fingerprint. It also makes cleaning those areas a lot easier since all you have to do is take some tissue and wipe the fingerprints off that layer of plastic (which comes off pretty easily) rather than that delicate mirror like material.

Posted by: The0ry

Oh because if the scratch is not that visable, then putting a screen protector will make it disappear. If you ever try using the Brasso make sure it's a fibercloth and shake it to make sure there's nothing on it. When you use the cloth also try not to use your fingernail to apply pressure or else it'll scratch it. Good luck!

Posted by: TokyoElbow

BRASSO is similar to T-Cut for cars, you should look for a very fine grade rubbing compound if you cant find BRASSO.
But from what you have said in your posts it doesn't sound like a surface scratch, more like a fracture within the screen itself.

It's really hard to keep your phone away from those scratches. The reflective surface of the P905i is exactly like my Z610i, and mine is all scratched up =/ One must be extremely careful. They appear even if you have never dropped your phone. Please do keep us updated with your situation murdoc2k.

I've sent a message to lol.dqn and to my surprise, lol.dqn actually saw my picture! She told me that if I wanted to replace that part of my k-tai it would cost $40-50 dollars. I also have to ship the phone back to her (which means $$). I'm using this as my last alternative.

Posted by: murdoc2k

Update:

To ensure that my P905 doesn't get any worse from brasso, I've currently tried brasso on a few things. Thick glass (which appears not to have much effect), plastic bottles (to see how it reacts with Plastic bottles) and a cheap olympic watch from Mc Donalds back in 1998. So far, it's been confirmed that it won't react to plastic (eg: it won't cause any precipitation) but scratches on the watch was not recovered. There's visually no effect. I'm currently holding off apply Brasso on P905i at the moment just to wait a bit longer to see its effects.

Posted by: murdoc2k

Update again:

After continuously re-applying Brasso after rubbing it with a gentle cloth for approx 20-30 seconds, the minor scratch on the Olympic watch seems to be diminishing. P905i was then placed into test and the marks did indeed weaken significantly. It's been rubbed around 6 times and now it's barely seen (although it still can but you have to inspect it really carefully and it has to be under correct lighting conditions).

It's safe to say that I've achieved satisfactory results rather than paying another $50.

I'm currently looking for people who can purchase on Yahoo auctions Japan for me for P905i's accessories. I've seen a few that can help me protect that front cover. I have one requirement and that is the person who's the "middle man" must setup a payment on ebay for security purposes. I will not do this outside of ebay as there's no security for me if any dispute occurs. I am more than happy to setup a deal with you on ebay if you are able to grab 2 items that I want from Yahoo Japan Auctions.

It won't completely remove the scratch. What you're hoping for is to reduce the visibility of the scratch. If the scratch is minor, then it'll be ok. Otherwise, there's nothing much you can do other than replace it.

That reminds me, I guess you can replace your housing. But I have no idea how you will do that with a flip phone [it's possible, but much harder] and where you can buy one... Only do that when you there is a lot of scratches I guess.

I have a friend who customized her phone by having different housing colour combinations of her phone. X_X

Well you can do that. I know they sell those in Japan. It's just a layer added ontop of the cover itself. It's neat because you can always "change style" whenever you feel like it, but those customed covers don't come cheap.

If you want to replace the housing, the only way to do it is via Docomo Shop. This means you have to ship your phone back to Japan and they will repair it at Docomo Shop. My seller (lol.dqn) says she will offer that service for her clients only and it the cost would be 40-50 dollars.

The cost is too great to send it back for repair. You'd better off purchasing a can/bottle of Brasso and giving it a try first.

I live in Japan.

I can help you out, I have a paypal account, drop me a PM.

Hi all,

I'm seeing the same scratches on a friend's P905i and I finally realised why.

When the phone is closed, the upper part of the keypad (d-pad and surrounding keys,) including the metal centre d-pad key, will make contact with the screen if the display is subject to enough pressure (such as in a pants pocket.)

This is probably a result of the thin design and the P905i's relatively weak side hinge, allowing the display to flex inwards.

The only solution: stop it before it happens. A screen protector, even one that doesn't fit perfectly, will save lots of grief.

Too late for us who learnt the hard way, but I hope it helps future owners.

Posted by: TokyoElbow

perhaps this should be brought to the attention of the manufacturer? or docomo?

Go to walmart and buy screen protectors for any phone or pda, then cut them to the correct size for your phone. I have done this for my HP ipaq 510 and it works great. Much cheaper than paying for them on ebay.

or if you're feeling real ghetto, clear packing tape works wonders. be real careful with the xacto knife when doing fine trimming. Looks factory, and so far the mirrored top remains scratch-free *knock on wood*
^_^

lol it not that i cant get a screen protector i have one for the inside screen already i jus dont like the screen protector on the front very much, but I rethinking it now cause it gets scratched so easy, and you can get screen protectors off deal extreme for cheap
