What Would You Do......

Okay, so today my iPhone fell into a bucket of water (yeah the commode)! Don't ask how--just know I had an out of town emergency, and after being up for more 30 hours, I placed my phone in my upper jacket pocket, I set my bag down, and in it dropped.

Fortunately, I have a computer endorsement policy on it through my home ins. I called the claims department and my check, less deductible, is in the mail and I can keep the old phone. (Amazing, huh? They haven't even seen my receipt yet, but when they heard I had to go out of town on a emergency and then that happened with the phone they had major sympathy and processed my claim in about 15 mins so I could go get a new phone today/tomorrow if I can find one here.)

So---I am going to have close to a 500 dollar check on Monday but no iPhone and believe me today I have already missed it like crazy!!! I have a backup phone but no numbers in it, my maps to get here are gone, my hotel info was fried etc etc.....

But back to my question, if this were you, would you:

immediately replace the iPhone with a new one and just possibly sell it in the future if you liked a newer gen phone better (Mine was 16 gb, still a virgin and then I went and baptized her!)

or

bank the money for a time and see what happens with iPhones in the next month or so and then decide then

I am really torn about this, cuz once the new phones come out (whenever that is, no speculation here!) I planned on selling mine and getting a 3g full GPS version if I liked the newer model better.

But, after having to drive out of town yesterday, driving in the dark into unknown territory, it was really great to have the google maps on my phone. I could drive and follow the directions without turning my light on to read printed directions. (But, that also made me realize how great 3g and GPS would be cuz it was hard to pinpoint my location with edge and google.)

So, what do you think? (While you ponder this, I am going to open up my phone and see how wet it is in there! Last I checked, the touched screen didn't respond consistently. I have a back skin on it and an anti-glare screen, but water obviously got in all the openings. I want to get the battery out and let it have a good chance to dry out.)

Wow, not one person has an opinion about this....amazing. Well, just an FYI--it's been over 3 days now since the baptism and my phone is at 100% functionality. No glitches or freezes and it has been charged 2 times. Utterly amazing! I am pretty much in shock that I am not seeing any side effects. I credit this to using a iPhone skin wrap, and I guess that God really digs me. (It did happen on the Natl Day of Prayer! : )

So rock now you got 500 bucks and a iPhone working huh?

if it would've messed up I would have waited out till I see the specs of the 3G phone and go for it then. Now you got some extra scratch there. Save it for the phone too. Sell the old one.

so, how much was your deductible on your insurance?

Posted by: rockyjr

50 bucks, twenty dollars/year for the policy to insure all my PC's up to 5K. Not bad....but, if my phone really is okay, I am sending the check back. I am going to wait at least a month and see if I notice any flukes or issues with battery etc.....

I say, keep the money for a month or so... it won't hurt...

I mean, if there is a new one, why not just wait 4 weeks?

Just IMHO

Yep, that's what I am thinking. It's pretty amazing the phone works!! But, I am keeping in mind I had an error on the screen as soon as I pulled it out of the water. I think it's cuz the sim card got wet.

I had the same thing happen to me, I dropped it in and immediately pulled it out. Left it off for a few days to completely dry. I have now had it working about 4 months and no problems!!

When I first pulled it out, it complained something about "accessory not working with the iPhone" but that went away and has never came back.

Is the water indicator in the headphone jack red? if it is you may want to keep the money because your warranty is gone on it now. Mine was still white so I am good to go should something happen.

If you can live without the iPhone for a month, wait.

Thank you so very much for sharing your experience!!! I didn't know that there was an indicator in the headphone jack. Very good to know!!! I think mine may still be showing white, but hard to tell. Could you just peek right in and tell or did you have to use a magnifier or anything? Thanks again!!

So, it's been 19 days since the fateful baptism of my iPhone. I went to the Apple store today and told the genius what happened and he thoroughly checked the phone out and ran some diagnostics on it with syncing/restoring/charging etc...

He showed me that all the places we should see water damage and corrosion, but those areas were clean. I asked him if my warranty was voided, and he said that my phone is the cleanest phone he's ever seen and that to reward my honesty he wasn't flagging my account or anything like that and that as far as he is concerned my phone is fine.

So, the verdict is the check is going back to my homeowner insurance company and invisble shields truly are that! : )
