tilt vs Motorola Q9 Global

Both of these devices have their weak points and strong points. Also both are rated fairly high by critics. Only specification I couldn't really figure out is which out of these two phones have the better gps capabilities. Can someone tell me? ALso out these two phones, which one is overall the better choice? Thank you!

Basically it is going to boil down to your desire for screen type (touch or not), and keyboard (exposed or not). Size may be a major factor for you also? No one can tell you which is the better choice for you. For me, the Q was never an option. I left the full PDA world for a very short period of time a while back for a regular smartphone, and quickly jumped back to a full fledged PDA. I found myself continuously trying to peck the screen of the smartphone :P

Actually, I totally understand what your saying because I used to have wizard when it first came out then switched over to dash. Although I liked the mobility of dash, I missed having more control and functions. If i do get tIllt, I'm for sure going reflash it with dutty's rom, so won't have all the problems other users are facing. It's apparently 184 dollars with contract now. i can prolly also opt for android when its fully developed. K I think i'll go with Tilt. Lol

I have both and I frequently find myself carrying the Q9 and leaving the Tilt at home. The Tilt is a brick. (thicker and heavier)

The Q9 is aGPS while the Tilt is a standalone (QualComm) GPS. In my experience, if GPS is the prime consideration, I'd take the standalone GPS over the aGPS without hesitation. My Tilt is the fastest GPS phone I've ever used, and by far the most accurate (when I zoom all the way in on my position in Google Maps, all I have to do is take a few steps, and the position updates - I've never had an aGPS phone that did that). The delay in aGPS just shunting the timing data back and forth in order to get a fix will make it slower.

Really? I haven't used the Q's GPS but the one on my Tilt takes forever to get a signal with Google Maps.

The Q9 is standalone iirc, it can get a lock without signal, ive tested it without the sim card and it has gotten a signal.

You are right - the AT&T Q9h is a standalone GPS device. It is the Q9m and Q9c which are aGPS only devices (i got confused with all the dang versions of that phone).

As for the comment on Google maps and the Tilt, yes, mine is very fast. A couple of seconds to get a stable fix in gmaps, live search maps, or AT&T Nav. I do have Quick GPS set to auto-update it's cache data. I also have a freeware app for standalone GPS (lat., long., elevation and compass sort of app) and topo maps (the actual paper maps, not on the phone) when I go hiking and it gets a fix quickly and easily too.

What about tethering (sp?), is it viable?
if yes, who leads Tilt or Q9?
Any comments on the two different Oper Sys?

I have owned both the Q9 and the Tilt. I bought the Q9 first. I really liked the keyboard but missed the scroll wheel from the original Q. All in all the Q9 was a good phone but it left me wanting more. I was a little hesitant on sending it back to get the Tilt. I read a lot of people complaining about the size on the Tilt. I honestly think the Tilt feels better as a phone than the Q9 did. I always felt like I might drop the Q9 but the Tilt feels perfect as a telephone.

It's all a matter of personal preference. I like the Tilt 10x better than I liked the Q9. And I really liked the Q9. The Tilt is much more customizable and there are various cooked and official ROMs for it. This stuff is nonexistant for the Q9. I also like the touchscreen much more than I thought I would. It comes in very handy for one handed operation. I have also loaded a 20-key on-screen keyboard that makes for great one handed typing. It's amazing how many hacks and mods you can do on an HTC WM device.

I replaced my Tilt with a Q Global last Tuesday and I haven't missed the Tilt one bit.

The only 2 reasons for me considering a Tilt vs. Q9h are the following:

1. WiFi (going international, or to the boonies, this will save me a bunch)
2. Touch screen

I personally like Moto products, but may end up on a referb Tilt vs. referb Q9h.

Are you going to be purchasing a data plan? The Tilt has WiFi built-in (internet without a data plan), but the Q9h does not (data plan required for internet).
Is size a defining factor for you? The Tilt is thicker, but the Q9h has a larger footprint.
How do you prefer your keyboard? Always exposed (Q9h), or slide-to-access (Tilt).
How important is the touchscreen factor?

The two devices have pretty similar features, so you should think long-term which device will suit you better.

Its not aGPS vs GPS. aGPS is a GOOD thing, not bad. Tilt supports aGPS, but is not enabled for AT&T and I do not think the Q's is enabled either. aGPS is normal GPS but with the ability to use info from the towers (your general position) to make it start up faster. The reason the Tilt's may be faster is because of the QuickGPS program it has.

Personally, I'd probably go for a Q9h if it had WiFi, as I don't plan to be on data plans all the time, and Motorola products have worked well for me.
I've read that the Q9h works well with weak signal to boot.
Touch screen is a nice feature for browsing, filling out drop down forms, etc.

I love the slide keyboard but I am 80% a phone based user. I am growing in text and email an do very little browsing. A valuable cost saving function is tethering to my laptop so I do not need an air card, and that I can get email on both. I can review on the Q9/Tilt and archive save on the laptop. I've been told BlackBerry is best for this but I am Outlook based and additionally BB does'nt support G3 download speeds.
How wise is it to use the Handset vs AirCard for normal internet use on the laptop? What is AMR-HR?

Posted by: formercanuck

AMR-HR is an audio codec.
GSM typically has a few different codecs to use:

HR = Half Rate
FR = Full Rate
EFR = Enhanced Full Rate (very good audio quality)
AMR = Adaptive Multirate
AMR Full Rate = Adaptive Multirate, Full Rate.
AMR Half Rate = Adaptive Multirate, Half Rate

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adaptive_Multi-Rate

Full rate codecs transmit / receive on every frame.
Half rate codecs transmit / receive on every 2nd frame.

Since Half rate codecs 'can' go as high as 7.95kbps, there is much less error correcting being performed with that payload.

Full rate codecs are typically VERY clear, little 'garble' and will allow for calls under really weak conditions.

I have the Tom Tom software on my Tilt and it works flawless. Very good GPS in this phone.
It's nice hot having to have a data connection to work also unlike using Google maps.
