Buying a BB with no BB Data plan?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Sorry I did a search but came up empty. Is AT&T like VZW with BB devices i.e. can a user use a BB device without the special BB plan? In other words, will AT&T allw me to purchase an 8130 and use it as a regular phone without the BB plan? TIA!

Not only has this question been asked far too often, but this has nothing to do with the carriers. It's about RIM. If you want to use your BB as a regular phone, you can go without a BB plan (though most carrier will argue the point), but if you want to use the BB's most coveted feature (i.e., push mail) you need a BB plan, and this is true with any carrier.

You really need a BB dataplan to get the full benefit of the device, i.e. email and Internet. I don't think any carrier will sell you a BB without a dataplan any longer.

IMHO, why spend the money for a Pearl if you aren't going to use all the features?

I think getting a blackberry without a blackberry plan is pointless in a way, plus it drains your battery quicker cause it's trying to connect cause it gives the "data connection refused" error.

But, to each their own really. I loved being able to surf the net using opera.

i just bought 2 blackberry's with 2 35$ bb plans. I came from An att 8525 with the medianet 200 20$ plan. I cannot justify spending 70 bucks for non html email. On top of 70 bucks I have to spend another 10 bucks for more software for html email. I thought hey a bb is the ultimate email device but I was wrong Ill just have to wait tell the bb 9000 comes out.

then I also have to pull the battery once a day in both phones, watch my memory very closely , all my text messages, call log and all deleting by it self. Im sorry this was all in the last three weeks I thought messaging wise it was going to be different but I guess I dont care if i have to set a timer to check for email. But i love the actual phone but the email was a deal breaker and im also running 4.5 beta

with medianet I get Opera mini, yahoo go(decent program) gmail, youtube for half the price. i will miss the bb messenger.

Most of your problems could be the beta software. What model BB?

While its smart to get the BB data plan so that you get all the features, its not necessary. Surprisingly my browser DOES work even tho I do not have a BB data plan. I do I have a data plan, MEW1. I just use the gmail app for my email, works perfectly.

i was running the 4.3 that came with the phone. But the horrible email with text only no html made me switch to 4.5 which was html format but not html viewing. I kept reading that 4.5 solved the email problem but it was just html format vs. text and code. If my memory went below 10mb it would delete my call log, messages etc. and that was with about 6 programs on it.

Im sorry i love the phone but i cant justify 35 dollars extra. Windows mobile set my standard with the way they have there set up, its just not realtime i guess. which is important to some i guess but makes no difference when I can set it up to check every 30 minutes. I thought paying full price for Blackberry was going to be a different/better experience. not here.

I recently purchased a Pearl for a non-data line on my family plan. Of course, no data services but you do get text messages. For some blackberries, you can get mms without a dataplan, unfortunately, for the pearl you need a dataplan and you also need a memory card for pictures.

You just go into the network settings and turn "data off".
problem solved

so you're upset that you purchased the BB before doing all your researches and then disappointed that it doesn't do HTML natively? If you're so happy with the WinMo that does HTML, why switch in the first place?

I don't know what you do that you need to pull the battery daily, but since getting my 8820, I have never pulled the battery once.

I'm getting a AT&T BB 8310 without the data plan also; don't need. Can I still get free Navagation software that will make the BB a Navigation device in the car? Will other free software work without data plan/internet?

Posted by: CPcrazyfly

free software like google maps requires a data connection.

Posted by: blacksrt4guy

Most phones have assisted GPS which means they need a data plan to work.

You can also get the BB with the data plan and remove that data plan at any time. But if you're getting it from a non-AT&T store or site, make sure there's no minumum commitment. AT&T doesn't require one for direct purchases from them.
