I broke my T-mobile MDA and I need phone, and I'm switching to AT&T.

I see everybody in this forum with a keitai, but do they work in America or do you just like carrying them around here? I read the guide but I still need clarification.

-What is a "SIM HACK"?
-Can you use any "SIM HACK" to unlock a Japanese phone?
-What kind of Japanese phones can be unlocked with a SIM HACK?
-Can you use any Japanese phone with a SIM HACK?
-Can you use an unlocked japanese phone in the AT&T network?

I'm taking a trip to Japan in a few weeks and I'd like to buy a phone there (I'll have my cousin do the contract thing and just give him the money for the phone)
