Palm OS vs Windows Mobile

My company want to buy me a Treo but they are asking me to pick one. I'm already comfortable with Windows Mobile but I don't mind changing. What would be some of the pros and cons of the Palm OS over Windows Mobile?

well, coming from owning both the touch and centro. i would say the palm os is very user friendly. UI is lightning fast in comparison to any WM phone to date. I love how it notifies you of any new msgs or missed calls all in one screen with the ability to go-to the app.

though, if you want the power and flexibility of the WM UI, you will be dissapointed. its fairly outdated, and there isnt much you can do aside from adding a third party UI app if you want to configure it a certain way (I have heard ultimate phone is incredible, but i dont like the fact that it's a UI within a UI, though I may give it a go when i get hotsync to work...)

which brings me to my next issue. palm has no support for any 64 bit windows platform! I was really upset to find out that I will have to jump through hoops of fire in order to get it to function half decently. though if you are on a 32 bit windows OS, it should work correctly, so syncing (is that how you spell it?) will be no problem.

so from my experience: I LOVE MY CENTRO! given its disadvantages, I love the querty keyboard. the phone has not crashed on me yet, and it has yet to lock up or bog down. even though the UI could use a little work. there seems to be some very nice options that I may give a go once I get hotsync working correctly. as for my htc touch.. its currently tucked away in my drawer collecting dust...

I don't believe the Palm OS supports 3G. I just upgraded from a Treo 650 to a 750 and the 3G data speeds are pretty fast. The WM OS is slow compared to Palm. There is also a lack of new software for Palm. Some of the developers have stopped developing for Palm and have started giving their old software away for free.

Palm OS supports EVDO on the CDMA side, but it is not compatible with UMTS or HSDPA on the GSM side at the moment. Given that, and the fact that the OP hasn't provided us with the potential carrier it would be used on, it's hard to make a recommendation.

But based on my experience, I like Palm OS for email/text and PIM apps, and Windows Mobile for multimedia and browsing. I think Pocket Outlook is somewhat crap, and no matter how much I fiddled with the registry I couldn't make it hold a consistent data session for IMAP IDLE usage with Flexmail. Push mail through Exchange worked fine. (How suprising. =/) The available browsers do blow the Palm ones out of the water, though.

I'll echo the UI comments: Palm is dated looking but quite snappy, and I enjoy the consistency. WinMo gets points for flash and configuration options, but some of the UI choices (X button, lack of battery display) that have to be "corrected" with third party software make me want to know just what MS was thinking.

However, keep in mind my opinions are based on Windows Mobile 5 "Professional". Haven't toyed with 6 yet.

WinMo 6 is a visual update to WinMo 5. That's it. I have WinMo 6 on my Mogul. Other than that, I agree with everyone here. I love my Treo for day to day things. But the Browsing and Streaming video on the Mogul far surpasses Palm. (I don't mention listening to music because Pocket Tunes, and even the crappy RealPlayer served nicely)

I'll echo this too: I miss the speed of my Palm (Miss it because I really want to stay with one device). Snappy is an understatement, lol! More like "instant". With WinMo, you have to keep your most used apps open, like on a PC, for it to come close to the speed of Palm.

Palm Treo 750 has Windows Mobile 6. There are tons of videos about it on Youtube. Take a look at them. I can't really help you beyond that, since I never owned one. But the videos I told you about are great. These are the most informative ones. If you are interested, check them out:

Good luck.

I love my plam centro it works better then my old tmobile wing that crashed and was slow even with a memory my palm is fast and I haven't had any problems just yet that's my two cents but I am a new sprint customer still.

I was checking out AT&T tilt and I notice a lag when I open it, I think I'm ganna go with palm OS even though I didn't even know palm existed until few months ago. I use an old palm zire 31 and it was fast.

I think WM mobile is too advance or the current hardware is not powerful enough to tun it.

I have a 700p and a 700wx, which is sprint's WM-based treo and I love them both. However, no matter how long my friends try to convince me that the 700p is a better device, i just can't agree.

I think having the windows button to load your start menu, having the okay button to back out of apps without going all the way out of an app, and the higher resolution and sharper imaging is what makes the WM version better. My friends tell me that the 700p can do more with 3rd party applications, but I found everything I need and want on my wx, including a player that allows me to watch youtube videos, with better video quality and better audio syncing than simply viewing youtube videos on my 700p.

I'd go with the WM version if I were you, but I'm sure you've already made a decision by now. I just wanted to throw my opinion in.
