AT&T Tilt vs Apple iPhone

Hi! I just joined this site because I need some people to talk to about my cell phone dilemma, who probably know more about this than I do. So, lets get to it!

Coming May 13th, I'll be able to upgrade my current phone on my AT&T Wireless plan, and I can't decide what one to get! I want to get a phone with lots of features and something cool about it, so I've boiled it down to the AT&T Tilt and the iPhone.

AT&T Tilt Review

Apple iPhone Review

EDIT: Other ideas I have for phones...
Helio Ocean
Pantech Duo

They both have great features, and I love the Tilt's slide out keyboard and tilting screen. The bad thing about the Tilt is the apparent lag when navigating menus, but I think I can handle it if its not too bad...

The iPhone is just awesome. It has the multi-touch touchscreen and an intuitive design, but a high price tag.

I've heard good and bad things about both, so I really can't make up my mind. Does anyone have any suggestions on which to buy, or other phones like these that are cheaper or better?

Thanks so much for any help!

It would help to know what features matter to you. I sold my iPhone and bought a Tilt because the Tilt's 3G, GPS, and Exchange synchronization matter to me much more than the iPhone's interface does.

I have both, if i had to choose between the 2, i'd go iphone.

The Tilt is big/heavy. I do not like using the stylus. but the biggest negative factor is that I am on my 5th Tilt (refurb), I might send this one back as well. Many Many problems.

But the coolest thing about the Tilt, is that I have TomTom6 running on it, and it's awesome. 3G+GPS=GREAT! If it was free from defects and a little lighter, it would be the perfect phone. *edit* I thought of another cool thing about the Tilt. It has Sprite backup. when I get my replacement Tilt, I run sprite backup, and then I restore it on the replacement phone, and I am up and running in no time! (you need MicroSD card to save the backup)

The iphone keeps me entertained when I am waiting (dentist appt, waiting for wife, at the airport,..etc). It has a great browser (but no, cut, copy, paste). The only problem about the entertainment side, is the battery life. I was waiting for my dad at the Dr's office, and I killed the battery in about an hour. (and I forgot the charger in another car).

and lastly, wifi on the iphone is way better than wifi on the Tilt (too complicated)

this is all my opinion, so no bashing please. Take it with a grain of salt.

Well, I would mainly want the phone for pictures, videos, music, games, and internet (besides calling of course). Both phones have them (except the iPhone apparently doesn't do video). Because you own the Tilt, do you notice any significant lag or downsides instead of the iPhone?

Get the iPhone.

lol, i have the tilt, bought the iphone, and then gave it to my wife cuz it wasnt what i wanted. regarding fogleroller's post, i've honestly never had those problems. i'm on my first tilt (got it when it first came out ~november?) and love it. you definately want to upgrade the rom to something better than what it comes with, and there is almost no lag. and i honestly rarely use my stylus, only take it when i'm adding a contact or something (which u could do with the keyboard and not the stylus. there are soo many programs out there that make it finger-friendly, most importantly the htc home screen. regarding the wifi, either you didnt know how to use it, or yours was defective. i simply turn my wifi on, and it automatically connects to my preferred network. i entered my network password the first time only and now it connects in seconds.... so i'd definately get the tilt, but thats just me

As of today, HTC will be announcing a host of newer phones.

I say wait it out. The next gen iPhone and next HTC superphone for AT&T are just around the corner. 1G iPhone and Tilt will be old news after a few months. I say the best time to get newer phones is between fall and winter. February is when AT&T clean up inventory and you can get a discount (like $99 for smartphones). Spring and summer is never the best bet since it is the middle road between the promising fall lineup and good discounts.

Woah...I just read that article you posted, Silent Witness, and I have to say that it is AWESOME! May 6th is today, so does that mean that all those phones are now available? Where can I read more about them?

Thanks so much!

ALSO: @omaralt: How do you upgrade the rom for the Tilt?

More announcements from HTC coming this week. Just wait a couple more months. I am in the same situation of renewing a contract with AT&T (was finished on Feb 18), but I plan to wait and see what the second half of 2008 might bring.
