From today Tech News of the AAP News Service:

Vodafone will begin selling Apple's cutting edge iPhone product in Australia later this year.

Vodafone said on Tuesday it had signed an agreement with Apple to sell the iPhone in Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey.

"Vodafone Australia is enormously pleased to be included in the agreement to sell the iPhone to our customers later this year," Vodafone Australia chief executive Russell Hewitt said.

"The iPhone has already proved to be extremely popular with customers in other parts of the world and Vodafone is confident that today's announcement will be well received by all Australians who are keen to get their hands on their own iPhone."

"The iPhone's Australian launch is well timed to coincide with our plans to deliver an enhanced mobile internet and entertainment experience to customers."

A spokeswoman for Vodafone in the United Kingdom said the company was unable to confirm the release date or pricing of the iPhone in Australia.

"At this stage I cannot comment," she said.

She was also unable to confirm whether the iPhone would be a 3G model.

The current version of the iPhone uses enhanced GSM, known as EDGE or 2.5G, to communicate with mobile phone networks.

Many IT websites have suggested that Apple chief executive Steve Jobs will launch a 3G version of the iPhone at Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference on June 9 in San Francisco.

There have also been rumours that Apple may begin selling unlocked iPhones through its Apple stores and resellers.
