Is there anyway that you can change the keyboard from the Surtype to a full qwerty keyboard? i really like the phone except i text a lot and i really wanted this phone to have a full qwerty keyboard.

The only full QWERTY is the tiny, ugly Windows Mobile one that comes on it.

For $10 I use this, it's the best I've found:

I map it to the camera button for an easy one click access to it at all times. I recommend getting this matching HTC skin:

yea spb is definitely your best bet for a full qwerty keyboard. you should also check out touchpal. it isnt full qwerty but it is half qwerty like on the pearl, but also touchpal has awesome word recognition software on it so i found that i can type faster on it than on a full qwerty keyboard.
