The Challenge! GSM Only

Okay here's the features I am missing from my Rokr E6 that I would like to see in my next phone.

a) 30fps@320x240 Video Playback or higher

b) WiFi (has to work with Skype Mobile)

c) Default 3G/EDGE support (updated firmware in E6 have that available now)

d) microSD support (already have cards)

What I am waiting for is for T-Mobile's @Home service to open up on the phone selection side as its very limited at this point and as I understand it, you can't use just any GSM phone with that service.

For the international calls I do make I can use Skype Mobile in the meantime.

I get decent playback for video, I currently record using Vista Media Center and have to go through two programs to use DVR-MS files on the phone and actually wouldn't mind Windows Mobile which would eliminate using the other program and I can edit and shrink with Vista Movie Maker.

Those were my main reasons for upgrading. I use Skype and I would like to increase usage since they just announced flat rate usage. Having WiFi (even though I currently don't work near a hot spot) would keep the phone viable a bit longer and A2DP support for my JVC NX-5000 would be welcome as well.

I like the Nokia N81 and the HTC/T-Mobile Shadow, so I am looking to keep the price around $300. I paid $270 for my E6 two years ago and can accept higher price point to get the features I want.

Thanks for your opinions...

well any N series s60 nokia phone has this. well actually, the n95 and n82 does the video recording at 30 FPS along with playback. the n95-3 and -4 have 3G bands for ATT, so those 2 are your best bet.

Yeah but $460??? About $200 more for N-Gage, GPS (I have a JVC NX-5000 but I suppose that could be useful overseas) and WiFi? Okay I can host more than one smart card format, lol.

I dunno, I could live without N-Gage and GPS, so I guess I have to wait for the N78???

Not in a terrible hurry

There's a little more to it than that, but the big differences (some of which you mentioned) are GPS, WLAN, 5mp camera, and a plethora of additional little features that you may not see on paper. If you have no need for those main features, the phone may not be for you, but there's more than enough technology in the device to merit the price tag. Hell, it was worth it back when the original was $700.

This is true and I am fan of convergence.

S60 operating system does what I want it to do, which is connect to the future Slingbox I wanna purchase.

The rest of the "fluff" I could use such as N-Gage, 5 MP camera with flash, multiple memory card options, WLAN and GPS which would work out well in Europe and rental cars or even on Germany's IC/ICE...

Any suggestions on where to buy?

Wirelessly posted (HTC Wizard: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.11) PPC; 240x320; HTC_P3600i/1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1)

The HTC Excalibur does everything you'd like except for the 3G and video playback, and also has the advantage of WM, which while a little less stable then S60 is quite a bit more expandable and customizable.

you won't really find many phones that are uma readyyy

Best places to buy the US versions of the N95 (of the -3 and -4 variant with 3G for AT&T) is from dell.com, amazon.com, tigerdirect.com, buy.com, or mobilecityonline.com. Make sure you're buying the right variant of the device and if you have questions about the differences, there's a sticky about them in the S60 forum.

Well I switched over to T-Mobile and I am going to try Webguide 4 to see if EDGE is fast enough for streaming video@15fps.

T-Mobile's 3G I think gets a full release in major markets by Oct 1st (LA is suppose to have it by Sept 1st) but I have seen the confirmed 3G/UMA list of upcoming phones from T-Mobile and frankly I'm disappointed.

The best one out of the lot IMHO is the Shadow II which gains UMA support but no GPS and won't be a bargin if its priced like the orginal - $300!

Since my original post, the Nokia N82 and N78 have come out. I'm leaning towards the N82 since even if the N78 suppors AT&T's 3G, it doesn't support T-Mobile's and I rather give up 3G for 30fps playback if that's the case.

Actually I might just sit out Q3 and Q4. I might just nurse the E6 until Q1 of 2009 when I suspect HTC Touch Diamond might be T-Mobile's "Killer App" and the type of device needed by T-Mobile if it wants to pull market share away from AT&T and Verizon for the muti-media phone crown.

Welp, more research... Thanks for the replies
