Blackjack II keeps on waking / screen turns on

Regardless of whether I have the screen off, or the phone locked, it'll "wake up" every few minutes and the screen will turn on. When the phone is locked, it'll turn on, but will be in a dimmed state. What's causing the phone to do this?

It can be a couple of things.
E-mail being checked according to what you have setup for auto-checking.
The phone moving from 3G to a EDGE/GPRS signal.
