Customs/brokerage fees on HTC repair?

I just got a $45 customs/brokerage fee on an HTC touch I sent for repair from Canada to Texas. Shipping back they said they'd pay for but I got charged the above fee, is this something the customer usually pays for, or should I call HTC/Fedex?

yes, shipping to the company is your responsibility including any customs duty and taxes.

yea that is normal because it is anitem of value. My gf got charged $57 duty when she received a quilt her aunt made and it was shipped from Ca lifornia to Canada. She complained and had it brought down to $15 so I would call Fedex and ask why you were charged so much.

There are two ways here.
One: if you send your device for repair as an ordinary person, in this case it depends from the laws of your country (in my country it would count as an personal item that was sent for repair and you would not pay custom fees because it is under the limit - 175 euros).
Second: if you send the device to HTCs office on your country and than they send it for repair somewhere else in the world, than Htc (in this case the customer) will pay taxes ('cous they have probably more than one device for repair) as they are considered juridical subject and the law differs for juridical subjects as there's no personal items for companies.

I can't see why you should have paid anything. The device has already been taxed once when it entered Canada the first time, assuming you bought it in Canada. If you need to send a device to another country for repair then it shouldn't be taxed on it's return.
I experienced a similar thing when I lived in Cyprus before it was part of the EU and I just had to show the customs proof that I sent the item to another country for repair. You should have proof from the courier company you sent the device with and the repair centre hopefully detailing the serial number.
I'd speak to Fedex or your customs office and show proof that you sent the device for repair. It's a lot of hassle for a relatively small amount though.
