Difference between JB and Unlock

Hi, I'm looking at the iPhone and will probably be unlocking it myself. My question is, what is the exact difference between jailbreaking and unlocking? Thanks

Jailbreaking opens up your phone to install any apps/software you want on your iPhone.

Unlock allows you to use different phone carriers with your iPhone. For example, using iPhone on T-Mobile.

Jailbreak - So you can install 3rd party apps

Unlock - So you can use any GSM sim

You will still need to:

Activate - So that you can use with iTunes and use native apps without problems

You will need to perform all 3 in order to have full functionality of your iPhone.

There are lots of methods to do this... do your research as some can permanently damage your iPhone if done incorrectly.

Are you game?

There is a sticky at the top of this section. You really can't miss it (assuming you look there).

Oh I see, yeh, there seems to be a problem with the iLiberty site.

Just a quick question, I will be getting the iPhone tomorrow. I'm still on my old contract and will unlock using that SIM (still has service). Once I get my new SIM, will I need to 'reactivate' the phone? Does iLiberty capable of doing such? Thanks for tolerating the newb Q's!

Not sure if you figured it out yet...

If you unlock and activate it without going thru iTunes (iLiberty), then you would still be on your current (old) contract. You can continue to use your old SIM card. No need for the new SIM that comes with the iPhone unless you are a new AT*T subscriber using the iPhone.

iLiberty can be used to unlock, activate, and jailbreak with no problems. Be sure to read the guides
