Thinking of getting HTC P4000 Telus

Well I have been looking at getting a new PDA phone for a bit, I have a Nokia 6265i right now and its time to upgrade.

Currently I have a Telus contract with 13 months left on my 2 year contract. I was talking to them today and I got them down to voiding this contract and then I could get the HTC for $200 on a 3yr contract. Do you guys think this is a good deal? Think I can get them lower? What are peoples opinions on this phone I have been reading a fair bit about it so far. I like what I' am reading.... I was reading about the RevA upgrade for them is this standard on the new ones does anyone know?

I notice these phones have been out for a while now, are they going to be releasing a new model of it sometime soon that I should wait for? I live out in the bonnnies and reception here isn't always the greatest my Nokia picks up pretty good reception out here, what is the HTC like for reception? I was trying to read and find out if say I' m online on facebook and I get a call, what happens? What are peoples experience with the wifi range on it? Is it a pain to get it to connect to some open wifis? Thanks a bunch and if anyone has any other usefull information on it I would appreciate it.

Mainly I' m lookin at this phone because I like the slider phones, and I would like one with a full keypad like this one does. I haven't phone another one like it, is there one? The Blackberry with a full keypad is to wide for my liking.. I was also looking at the HTC S620, but no Wifi which is a big disappointment.. Thanks

the newers models will probably come out at the end of the year or early next year. not sure if you want to wait.

for reception, i guess you have to try to get someone to let you borrow theirs to see how it works in your area. nobody can tell you for sure how good or bad it will be. me personally, i always get great reception with my htc phones, never had a problem with that.

if you're browsing like on facebook or anything, or using the internet for anything else and you get a call, your internet connection will disconnect and your call will ring. after you're done on the phone, your net connection will reconnect and you can continue doing what you're doing. apparently with revA, you're supposed to be able to stay connected to the net even when you receive a call, but i dont know much about that. there is a rom update for the p4000 that enables revA and gps.

wifi is pretty good if you're trying to connect to a nearby connection. but if it's a little far im not sure it will be any good to you. you cant expect the same performance as a notebook wifi card because i guess your phone wifi card uses not too much power to conserve battery power since batteries in phones are so tiny. like i said, if its a nearby connection, like lets say youre in a starbucks or something, then its perfect,no problems. but if you're trying to pick up the connection of someone in a building across from you then you're chances are low.

if you care about size and want a smartphone instead of a touchscreen pocketpc, get the htc s640, it has a full qwerty and wifi. same processor and ram as the p4000. screen is very nice. no gps or revA at the moment though.

DONT GET ANYTHING FROM TELUS, their roms are the worst peice of crap ever programed. the hw is fine, but their version of windows is absolute junk. constantly freezes and drops calls. i have to deal with telus roms at work and i just end up using a the gsm version.

I have a P4000 from Telus, and I drive all over from Burlington to Orillia to Whitby and I have yet to run into any problems like the previous post has, I have my P4000 loaded with apps and run Garmin GPS a lot. I also use it in Buildings and all in all I would give it a 10!
I have no problem hooking up to other WiFi's and the keyboard is nice and bright at night!

ur getting the standard offer and ur contract is not over. seems pretty reasonable so u should accept it

Thank you all for the inputs. I have been doing some reading and am hearing of a lot of new phones coming out with full QWERTY slide out keypads I think I' am going to wait and a bit. I went to Telus store the other day and they don't even have the P4000 on display anymore because its a older model they said.

Thanks all...

its only a year old. its birthday was april 13th. so its not that old. and a lot of newer devices they leave displayed are a pieceo f junk. i.e. Q9c s720. some are way older so them displaying it doesnt say much.

those newer phones are scheduled for September and thats a MAYBE. so u could possibly be waiting a longtime. but ifu have the patience then go ahead. personally i dont

Thanks RileyFreeman, I don't really wana wait. But if I do get it now I don't wana be stuck paying an arm and a leg to upgrade in sept-oct to a newer one.. I' m hearing lots of bad and good things about the P4000 what you think of yours?

p4000 is a great phone. the only issue with the phone is the ram it only has 64mb of ram. now as long as ur not loading a billion programs onto it and leaving them open meaning managing ur ram. ull be fine.

butttttttt the new phones if they are in fact true based on the leaked shots.

read here on whats supposed to be in this new phones
http://howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1365727

if those phones do come i dont expect them to be any less than 550 to 600 no contract. so wat i will suggest to u is this. go to craigslist or kijiji there are tons of people selling p4000 for around 250. the p4000 is 200$ plus tax on a 3 year contract therefore u might as well get it from them. then when these pohnes come out u can use ur contract discount to get them. so u win both ways

rileyfreeman .. actually i was just thinking the same thing of buying a used one for a few months until the new ones come out and then get it so Im not stuck dealing with telus twice this year over contracts... Thanks man..

It's your call if you wish to be hampered by poor Telus support (ie. one ROM update for the P4000 last July and neglecting supported driver & OS fixes released by other carriers since last fall) or bypass that and make the best of the Telus network with builds of ROMs based on and the cleaning of another carrier's ROM with Telus carrier specific settings.

It's best to be honest with the many choices than presenting it as though one is absolutely limited to Telus R&D.

The P4000 is a great phone -- out of all handsets for CDMA it remains the most full featured option. Riley's right about getting a used one. A few months ago off of Craig's list I got another one for $220 for my dad, quickly flashed a Telus build of Key's kitchen (a cleaned based of the March v3.35 Sprint ROM with EVDO & GPS) and all remains rock solid and full featured. There are other third party ROMs/Kitchens available with Windows Mobile 6.1, but they remain pre-releases or based off another device's build, so with their odd memory and driver quirks I'll stick with WM 6 until an official and equally viable WM 6.1 build for the P4000/Titan is available for a cleaning.

the P4000 hardware is as good as the tytn (the P4000 is actaully called the HTC Titan, and the GSM version is the TyTN)

telus roms are total garbage, they even crippled the bluetooth stack so you cant pair up a bluetooth keyboard.

once you reflash to a diffrent rom you are fine though.

How exactly do you reflash to a different rom? I am currently with telus? Would this take me off of my plan with them of just optimize the use of my device? I use my HTC P4000 for everything and would like to be able to use my bluetooth keyboard.

Three posts above I already stated how and where to learn.

A CDMA device has a hardware locked identifier for your phone to be recognised. Flashing a ROM will not change this and unless you bring your handset in to a Telus store for physical examination, can have no idea of any change.

When flashing, just specifically read through the troubleshooting guides and then instructions upon how to flash -- particularly how to find and then record the necessary information that is specific to your account. I could type out and repeat a basic guide here but it's safest to encourage people to go to a comprehensive site that includes pages of compiled info that will help you in case you get stuck and give you a fair choice of what ROM/Kitchens are available for you to flash:

(note: XDA-Developers is having intermittent server problems... should be resolved soon)

Reception on the HTC P4000 is not that great. And be advised it is not equipped with a SIM Card. It is very easy to link up with wi-fi, though you don't have much range. Like the above posting, I am constantly getting calls dropped and busy networks during peak hours and I can not make any out going calls.

One more thing on the HTC P4000. I purchased mine last year, and a few days after receiving it I started to have major problems with it freezing, issues with it connecting via bluetooth, and really poor sound quality. It also makes a high pitched buzzing noise and clicks every once in a while. This is all under warranty though, I could have gotten it fixed but TELUS said they don't provide PDA as temp. phones. I have over 60 cell phones on their network (business) They are making over $8,000.00 a month off of me and still couldn't provide me with a temporary PDA.

I will keep my phone until my contract is up, then I will seek service elsewhere!

GOOD LUCK with TELUS! I myself would go with an HTC any day... I love the layout of their phones, and you always have warranty!!

first off i have never had any of those issues with my p4000. so that seems like u got a dud that happens to all phones. and telus is right they DO NOT provide a replacement because they DO NOT fix you phone. they order u a refurb phone and when that comes it they give u the refurb and take urs.

the refurb phone is like new i have one and u cannot tell it is used. therefore there is no need for them to give u a replacement phone. it usually takes 2 -3 business days delivery time. if u are still under warranty go back and tell them u need a swap unit. whatever trouble they give u call into loyalty and retention if u have to sometimes these stores are idiots and/or lazy.

next if it is out of warranty it is 125$ plus tax for a damaged unit im not sure of the price out of warranty ull have to check with telus.

Thanks RileyFreeman after some reading I read about the issue with the default MSN. After I did my Rom update to WM6.1 I installed the latest MSN on it and it has been working fine now.. I can't believe I went this long without a smart phone, I'm in love.. lol.. I see you are running Skyfire, what do you think of it? I read about it and was going to try and download it, but I see the beta testing of it is currently closed, and can't be downloaded.. Do you run GPS on yours? or anyone else? I installed the latest Garmin GPS software on it, now I'm just trying to find a road maps for Canada. I found it at one place but the download seems to be corrupted..
